GF5: Melbourne vs Adelaide, Mar 31

The last hooray of this season is here. Regardless of who wins this GF series has had it all and been very entertaining. Ejections, thrills, spills, injuries, disciplinary findings, dunks, jams, flops, techs. It's all been there and it's been wrapped up nicely like a prawn wrapped in a piece of bacon....oh, you can't tell me that isn't heaven on a stick.

So, let's get down to this game. While Melbourne would have like to have this one tidied up in 3 in time for the team to spend Easter finding Easter eggs (non halal ones of course) with their family, or however they want to spend Easter. The fact is they haven't been able to subdue a rampaging Sixers team.

We all know how both teams play. Sixers have a very fast transition based play, driving into the key per play with the intention of scoring. That’s why they go to the free throw line so often. Melbourne rely more on slowing it down around the key, getting the extra pass in and creating the mis-match on "Daniel" Boone when they chuck up a three. Somebody trade in his skull cap for a raccoon skin hat.

So what are the known, knowns of this game:

Sobey will be booed by Melbourne fans
Shorter will flex his muscles
Hodgson will get called a foul for a clean block
Chill will be rocking it on the sidelines looking cool in a suit
Prather will be slick and clean to the basket
Ware will try something fancy
Vickerman's face will crack if he smiled
Joey's only comment will be "we'll do out best"
Boone will bring a tent to the key
There will be “issues” surrounding CG43 that won’t be his fault

Sixers will win by 3

I have so much nervous excitement for this game. It could well be one of the greatest NBL games of all time coming up. Both teams have the ability to put runs on eachother, and both teams can shut eachother down at times. This game very literally could go either way. I don't think it will be decided until the final minute.

Well done to United, too good today. The individual talent of Goulding, Ware and Prather was too much for the 6ers. In a game 5 it is the big time players that get it done and Melbourne had too many for the 6ers, especially without Childress. Game 1 and game 3 were the big missed opportunities for the Sixers to get that away win they needed but I loved the fight and the character of the team throughout the year and this series.

It is very unreasonable as league owner to celebrate. Obviously no issue with team owner but can choose when people are see him as owner of league and when as team owner. Can you imagine silver celebrating with the championship winner? I don't understand how some people can't seen this as a poor look.

Putting any consirpracy theories aside, is it time for LK to sell United? Not suggesting there was any foul play, United were clearly the top team this season, but owning the team and league is a pretty big conflict of interest.

Seeing the league owner out there celebrating with a team just doesn't feel right for a professional league trying to gain respect and a following and be taken seriously.

Appreciate everything LK has done and is doing for the league, but imo moving forward it'd be in the leagues best interest if he moved on from United and focused on just being a league owner.

Reply #681661 | Report this post

Not trying to invalidate. As said in original post Melbourne obviously far better today. Deserved the win. The Lk celebrating was a poor look. It's the same thing as saying it would have been fine for McLachlan to be celebrating on the ground with Richmond at the end of the gf, and no I hate the crows glad they lost just wish it was by more. If he is going to own teams which is a conflict but may not be another option he needs to do so in the background and effectively b a silent and unseen owner

It was enjoyable to watch but I think in 10 years I'll remember some individual milestones more than anything.

Seeing DA, an all time Australian basketball legend, in what I assume will be his last game.

Why is no one pissed at Joey for the 3rd quarter rotation where they were closing in at 6 points behind and he subbed players out. 14 minutes left wih a 2 minute break at 4 minutes. If beoke the momentum and it turned to ahot from there. They were settling in finally after first half nerves but it could have been their game. We will never know now. This was the game to not reat out players nothing to loae and everythig to gain. Up against it with all factors it was thw time to leave it alone and let them play.
This one is on the coaching group. The players finally showed up in the 2nd half and had the opportunity ripped from them. Disappointed for them.

Bit of an embarrassing game for the sixers. If we lost a close one I could probably deal with it, but that was humiliating.

As for LK, I've never bought into the conflict of interest thing but it definitely was jarring to watch him celebrate the win. Yes, he's the owner of United, but he's also the owner of the NBL. It was yet another sign that owning both entities just is not right.

I don't know if he can move United onto anyone else, or how that works, but there will always be eyebrows raised any time United has success because of this and it isn't fair on the players to have that.

Anyway, I guess it's onto next season for Adelaide. We will need to retain DJ at almost any cost, and if Creek goes overseas it leaves a massive hole. But having said that, we also need to look at how we bridge this gap with United. We need a team that can beat United in United. Is a healthy Childress the difference? Do we need to get rid of Shorter and get a point guard who can also provide points? Is the problem with equal-opportunity offense that when nothing is working, there's no one who will take it upon themselves?

United are now the benchmark for NBL teams the way the Wildcats used to be. When we put our next team together we need to have them in mind. We need to keep our core, because we're 80% of the way there, but clearly some small tinkering must be made.

See you in 18/19 Sixers. It was real.

I think 36ers needs to establish a more mature approach as they have some scary players on paper. If they can keep their cool and conduct themselves more like senior players it may translate to more success on court. It probably doesn't help that Joey is constantly losing his s**t and acting like a grounded 12 year old in front of the media.

Congrats Melbourne way too good on night and big pity our shooting was awful and didn't produce better result.
We need with our imports a true shooter so to open keyway more for our game style and to keep score ticking over if not working.
Whilst their shooters stole the game for them Boone and Wesley were way too strong under the basket which we must rectify somehow.
Shorter, Teys are a no and question marks on others and Creek back as captain if bigger OS things don't happen.

Congrats to Melbourne and more importantly the refs. Pretty solid game where if we counted calls you would be far under any of the numbers in previous games. Over the finals though, this will always be the series in which the players never got to choose the outcome of the games besides tonight. For one of the refs not to get dropped to 4th official shows the problem is not with the people with the whistle, it is with the person who controls them.

Would be happy for 36ers to press release that Shorter won't be signed. After a year of "Illawarra is a dirty team, I don’t like any of them". We get another twit who wants to walk the finals walk without putting up a game to back it. If you are as good as Al Green was, you can say what you want, but Shorter isn’t, so the mouth should have remained shut.

Looking forward to Creeks 10 day contract announcement.

Over the series United only scored 8 more points in total.

Not bad from the 36ers missing Childress for 3 games and United holding home court advantage and having pretty much 4 imports (3 at current or future NBA standard).

United were being tipped to win in 3 when the series started but Joey and these young Aussie lads the 36ers have developed nearly knocked them off.

Bad luck losing Childress in game 2 but they pushed it to 5 games. They even fought to keep it to 6 points in the last few minutes of the 3rd.

Well done lads.

I do think this loss will spur this 36ers team on.

Who are the 5 players they have resigned? If it includes DJ, Creek, Sobey and Deng then for mine 36ers are the early favourites for next season (to the extent that you can have early favouritism in a league like the NBL).

Deng's headed upwards. Real potential. And it sounds ridiculous but Creek turns 26 next month. Still a young ish group with upside and the familiarity factor only increases each year. Same program, similar personnel. It's worked for the Wildcats and it's now working for the 36ers. Just without the ultimate prize- yet.

There was no "victim" in that comment. I was saying well done to a team who performed so well even though they had a lot to deal with. Take it how you will though.

This was Adelaide's lowest scoring game since Christmas Eve.

Lowest scores this season:

75 points (at home against Cairns, Christmas Eve)

79 points (at home against United, Round 2)

79 points (in Perth, Round 9)

82 points (at United, Grand Final Game 5)

Was it me or did anyone else find the presentations a little subdued. Having a couple of Hungry Jacks workers handing out stuff, when the league has so many legends who could do this, would have been more appropriate.

Well done Melbourne , personally found this game the worst of the five, sixers were never in that game. Quite a few sixers players went MIA tonight when it mattered, very similar to when they lost to Perth a few years ago in game 3.

Teams who bat above their weight often choke when it all counts. We saw that last night.

Hey Manu. I reckon this season's 6ers with Childress fit and no game 3 halftime bullshit beat this years United too.
Hey uFlog I reakon no 44 to 1 free throw attempt discrepency in a single half of Game 4, the series does not even come back to Melbourne. After all, that was a single digit game too despite Adelaide consistently being rewarded for flops and flails on rebounds and handling the ball.
