Kirk Penney to retire at season's end

@NZ_hoops:

Kirk Penney holding a press conference tomorrow at midday. Draw your own conclusions....

Retirement or new contract, presumably. Hasn't played recent games (calf injury, I think) but Henare has spoken of him contributing in the post-season? That said, production has been limited and he wouldn't desperately need to play on for the money.

Kirk's stats this season: 9.9 PPG (41% FG, 37% 3P), 2.8 RPG and 1 APG. In 20 MPG. Scoring is fourth in the team. MPG sixth.

Retirement and/or season ending injury?

Wouldn't be a new contract as this is only the second year of the 3 year deal he signed when he returned to the Breakers.

Hell of a player, but the game has left him behind.
Someone please retire his singlet immediately.

Retirement effective immediately. One of the best to do it at his healthy best.

Retirement at end of finals? Or pulling the pin effective immediately?

Still gutted about him missing out on the 2010 Spurs. Thought he should have got a look - and think he would have got a look in if it was a number of other NBA teams.

One of the best if not the best SG in the world outside of the NBA at the peak of his powers.

Best player NZ had produced? At least in the conversation with the NBA guys anyway.

Great career and still a serviceable NBL rotation guy so all the best to Kirk in the future.

Guessing it's retirement after the finals.
Would he move straight into a coaching role?

Penney's a ledge!

Such a great player to watch when in his prime (which was a long time).
Born 10 years later he would have been an NBA player, but I guess that became the NBL's gain for quite a few seasons.

I remember at Challenge Stadium towards the end of the 'Cats tenue there when most opposition players and teams would fold Penney scored 40 in 40min game. Ok it was 39 points to be exact and not sure how many minutes he played, but WOW he was one of a few who turned up vs. the 'Cats at home.

I searched it - he scored 38 points in 35 minutes in a 40 min game at Challenge vs. Cats in a win. TRUE LEGITNESS RIGHT THERE.

and yes a genetleman. Rarely athletes are like that nowadays.

... and it was in Game 2 of a Semi-Final series to knock out the Cats. One of the rare games I walked out thinking "OMG"...

It forced a game 3. Cats won the first in NZ.

Only 2 others spring to mind in the current era, Martin and Lisch

Anon #009 what are you smoking?

Breakers won the second to force a third game - correct. They won Game 3 back at home.

Then they played Cairns in the Grand Final and were champions.

Hey sorry anon #009 thought you wrote that Cats won the series. Apologies.

That Penney performance is even better with what you just mentioned - Breakers with home advantage lose Game 1, then go into Game 2 against a team who rarely would lose at home and pulled it out of the bag and won Game 3 to complete an epic series comeback.

They still would've lost that game if Braswell hadn't fluked two garbage threes in the last couple of minutes. I still hate him for that.

I still remember those too. Low percentage shots that were daggers. Some guys have a knack for that, though.

Yeah, we weren't the only team he did it to that year. Almost did it to Cairns in that classic grand final game.
