Shows how strong the coaching pedigree is when Shawn Dennis can't get a job here. Hope he gets a job with an expansion team, works really well with young players.

Fearne another who started as a player then assistant now head coach like Henare has now.

If 3 of 8 head coaches have only ever had one NBL head coaching gig how is this recycling?

Plus all the other coaches listed below have proven themselves at other clubs previously by winning titles (except Gleeson who did it with his current club).

Wright 3 clubs - Bullets, Blaze, 36ers
Gleeson 3 clubs - Crocs, Tigers, Wildcats
Beveridge 3 clubs - Razorbacks, Wildcats, Hawks
Lemanis 2 clubs - Breakers, Bullets
Vickerman 2 clubs - Breakers, United

Fearne/Gaze/Henare - first club

The "recycled" term would be correct if you had most head coaching positions filled by old timers who had never acheived anything.

I thought this thread was about coaches like Cotter, Anstey, Heal, McDonald, Clarke, McLeod and the like that have coached before and what are they doing now and which is best suited to a gig of any expansion team.

Was wondering what Anstey was up to, didn't like him as a player but felt he got the rough end of the pineapple as a coach and wouldn't mind seeing him get another role at an NBL team

Anstey been busy winning championship with his HasBeens team in Masters comps. His team is the GSW of the league :p. Was crowing about his latest DP, some dude that got headlocked by Maric in the NBL... Wort something... his name. Anyways, kid might turn out ok in a couple of years for the over 35s...

WTF proud, Anstey was another ex-player fast-tracked too quickly into head coaching and he stunk. No thank you.

Anstey took over a team that won 2 of their last 13 games in 11/12, rebuilt the roster, won 12 games in his first year and 15 in his second year plus a SF win.

That's hardly a terrible coaching record (28-31) in those two seasons, he had that 13/14 team producing greater than the sum of its parts and he certainly didn't deserve to be sacked one game into the United era.

Not saying he was a master coach, but certainly some people are re-writing history about the results he produced coaching the Tigers.

I remember the televised timeouts. He didn't know what to say. Not a coach.

stewart from Seabl = no. If there was anybody from seabl (probably isnt) surely it would be Hill given what he has achieved in mount gambier.

Anstey did a reasonable job with that Tigers team in 2013/14.

Anstey is a far better coach than Gaze ;)

Hill can win championships with the talents and the money he spends. That doesn't make him an NBL candidate as a coach.
Hell Joey right won a few that way.

Wasn't Hill an assistant coach at 36ers for a couple of seasons?

Downer will be a very good NBL coach. He's an astute thinker, has the ear of the players, and also a good Xs and Os guy.

Pearlman is heading to NZ for his first head coaching role after this NBL season. He'll do well, too. More Aaron Fearne prodigies.

Of the incumbent NBL coaches, only Gaze stands out as likely or deserving to be axed. Even then, it's only his second season, and JVG has fucked up the roster. It'll be interesting to see if they can get some mojo happening during the remaining two thirds of the season.

Who would be the best former player coach?

The worst?

My vote for the worst would be Scott Fisher. Whether you liked him or not, he was an awesome player. But as a coach, it seemed he had nothing when his team were losing. When the were winning, he was full of chatter. But when they showed him in time-outs when losing, it seemed that he really seemed to struggle. I recall one timeout when all he offered was "Rebound guys, we gotta rebound the ball". So, I got that, as a player, he would've gone out and got after the ball. But as a coach, he didn't map out what he wanted his players to do and what if they did get the ball? Just go one-out?

To me, "Recycled Coaches" are guys like Eade in tje AFL. have some success but never go all the way, get sacked, bob up again a few years later somewhere else, repeat, etc, repeat.

Yes, its true, that a lot of the coaches previously coached elsewhere, but they were also all successful.

For mine, Vickerman is the only one with a question mark. Did he simply inherit from Lamanis?
But I feel he is doing ok at Melbourne considering the dysfunctional lineup he's inherited.

Joey is a loose cannon, but you can't dispute his ability as a coach.

The irony is that tje single worst current NBL coach didn't do his apprenticeship as an assisant, and it shows.
