A quick cheat sheet for those who don't know how addition/subtraction:

11<->10.5 = 0.5
11<->10 = 1
11<->8 = 3
10.5<->10 = 0.5
10.5<->8 = 2.5
10<->8 = 2

No Adelaide or SA locations, because they have churches and serial killers instead.

Time zones are an inexact science approximating the different moments the suns rays reach the earth as the earth rotates. Time zones are based on the local longitude compared to Greenwich, England (situated at 0 deg longitude). Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is used in military and aeronautical applications, as well as some other global applications, and is also known as "Zulu time".

Australia has 3 time zones but a very large land mass and distance from east to west (degrees of longitude). The Australian continent covers 48 degrees of longitude with 3 time zones (not including daylight saving time). Eastern, central and western.

In comparison, the USA has 4 time zones for the continental USA excluding Alaska (and Hawaii which is not a part of the N American continent, obviously, which 2 states add an additional 2 time zones). Alaska was only acquired from Russia in 1912, several years before Russia imploded in WWI and the Bolshevik revolution. Therefore, the time zones in the USA are more closely callibrated to GMT than the Australian time zones. Of course, Australia is more sparsely populated and the time zones follow the north-south axis, or “vertical” state borders. Hence, only 3 time zones for such a vast country.

The Australian land mass is as large as the continental US excluding Alaska, so the comparison of time zones is relevant and appropriate.

In an ideal time zone world, we could observe the sun rising (or setting) at the same local time anywhere in the world. Ie the sun would rise at 6:15 local time at any point on the globe or the Australian continent. From my observations, the sun rises approximately 10 minutes earlier near the most easterly point of the Australian continental land mass than it dies in Sydney. In Adelaide, I have observed that the sun rises approximately 20 minutes later than it does near the most easterly point of the Australian continental land mass (using local time zones for both, obviously).

If Kings fans want Sydney then daylight (even within their own state) they need to relocate their team to Cape Byron at high tide or the Ballina coastal rock platform at low tide in order for the Kings to be at the most easterly point of both their state and the Australian continental land mass. If they want the Kings to see the first daylight, they should relocate to Wollumbin/ Mt Warning. I think Norfolk Island is on AEST, so relocating there would let the Kings see daylight before the Australian continental land mass.

Your thoughts Manu...

TokotoRulzSucks

There is a Timezone at Coolangatta, Qld.

If you blindly believe your mobile phone's time you can actually think you’re in multiple time zones in a single Timezone. Mobile phones will receive signal from towers in Qld (AEST currently) and NSW (AEDST currently. So the time will change by an hour as the tower changes.

In summer at Gold Coast airport regular commercial airliners travel back in tin time, even whilst on the ground.

Time zones are important. Politicians even have cross-border taskforce/s that have achieved... nothing. As usual. A state politician got elected on a platform that included getting his town listed on the ABC weather as a separate town. ABC's response: yeah... nah. Included for about a month then business as usual.

More fun with time zones

Have 2 new year celebrations an hour apart ( or half hour or 2.5 hrs).

Catch the start of tv show you thought you'd missed, by changing channels.

This thread has helped us all become in the zone when it comes to the time. No man-to-man as this is a team effort.

Whoever fails from here on in with an incorrect tipoff time in a gameday thread will be whipped fifty times by kingpodge in leather.

Melbourne vs Brisbane at Carrara today.

I'm predicting Melbourne ahead by 60... minutes, before the game even starts.

I love timezones on every Melbourne Cup day, when invariably some fool in our office will say "Let's get the Brisbane office to take our calls while the race is on....and we'll take theirs when its on up there"
