Not to mention u18 3X3 where they didn't even send a coach or physio, just a team manager and a good luck.

Why is it that Australia do not bother with tryouts for these comps unlike the USA. Canada and Japan and every other country involved in the Uni games

Reply #643621 | Report this post

Because Basketball Australia has certain players in their radar and do not bother/want checking anyone developing outside their realm ...

There are a couple of girls not playing much if at all, is there a reason for that, injury perhaps, Alex Wilson for instance, thought the she would be a dominant piece of the puzzle.

To the person backing Brewster on every thread needs to realise that their child has a lot more to improve on if she wants a spot in teams like these.
So many more girls above her.

Give her credit she has improve a hell of a lot at college but still isn't up to the standard on the girls in her position.

The young side finished the tournament off on a high after dispatching Canada 79-52, with Darcee Garbin leading the way with a game-high 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. She received great support from Lauren Scherf who delivered 15 points and 10 rebounds with 3 steals, while Kristy Wallace chimed in with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.

Emerging Opals finish Four Nations Tournament with a 2-1 record

Brewster is playing a poor conference in a weak team in college hence why her stats look good, OK player but not at the level of some of these girls and ones left behind

BA should have tryouts for these uni teams, only good thing is because their is an age restriction they do change rosters .

Dear person who said "Brewster is playing a poor conference ...blah blah",

Lets talk with facts shall we ??

Brewster plays in the Mountain West conference. Mountain West is ranked 13th out of 32 conferences. What is your criteria of weak ??

And...the AIS/COE's extension St. Mary's college is in the Westcoast conference. Westcoast is ranked 15th, lower than Mountain West. By your standards it is even a weaker conference. Yet there is no shortage of St. Mary's players (with ordinary career stats too) regularly in national teams.

BA is a joke, it is time it got rationalized. We all pay for those public servants.

Note: I am not family/friend of any player named in this forum topic.

btw Utah State Women regularly had the youngest Div 1 starting lineup in the COUNTRY last season..not just the conference 4 Freshman & a sophomore
& beat every team in that conference with a few Aussies who should be on the 'Emerging' radar

Lol Brewster fan , 13th out of 32 conferences the women's team is ranked 189 out of 349 div1 teams in the NCAA
St Mary's is ranked 114 by the way

The other teams in the mountain west conference are ranked as follows

Air Force 332
Nevada 285
San Diego ST 270
San Jose St 203
Utah st 189
New Mexico 152
Fresno St 142
UNLV 107
Wyoming 99
Colorado St 55

Only two teams in the top 100 in that conference
So yes a weak conference it is

I am nobody's fan. Just going after baseless BS people emit here.

Look at St Mary's Turner's stats..similar player to Brewster. She is in a better team, not the main target of opposition D and in a weaker conference she should be doing better in her 3rd year than the sophomore Brewster right?

Brewster in a stronger conference, in a team with not many scorers, focus of the opposition defence YET has better stats than Turner. Both ppg and percentage in almost same amount of court time 28.7 mpg

Turner and likes automatic qualifiersn while Brewsters of the world do not even exist for the so called selectors. They are so afraid nonAIS players can do well.

Agree re Turner, but Brewster has never been in that calibre of elite players, and still isn't, don't get misguided by the stats that may come from such a weak conference, it would be the equivilant of Yth league not even champ Yth league.

Non of the players currently in that level here or even the champYth league are even close to being at the level required for inclusion into a national side.

But agree BA should look at others apart from those who attended AIS in their junior years, Panousiss is another, played in good conference but in a weak team, got to put up good numbers at college level against the weaker teams in ACC but failed dismally against any decent guards, too slow and no defence at all, yet there she is in the uni team.

Not a lot anyone can do, it's BA that needs to take the blinkers off, this is why try outs for such teams should be conducted

I wonder how free the coaches are to pick players OUTSIDE the COE.

If the majority of the team came from outside the COE then that would basically shoot down any credibility the COE has, in which case the government might as well cut its funding dramatically or even shut it down. (That's a much easier option than to actually FIX the damn thing - I agree with a lot of contributors on here that the COE just isn't producing the skilled players we would expect for the money, and that Oz needs ifor it's teams to succeed.)

Given how much money has been poured into the COE, I would expect BA to be under a lot of government pressure to make it look like it was a good investment by selecting heavily from the COE. Otherwise, I could see an embarrassed government cutting funding to basketball very quickly (& probably very happily).

Cof E don't get the funding they previously did it is all performances based now, hence why it's no longer called the Australian Institute of Sport, but it's not based on the performance of those at the C of E but on the sport over all at international events so unless they start to rethink their usual nepotistic selection path then they will be finding less and less funding will be going their way

They need a complete overhaul, only problem is most who get the jobs up there will now have kids of their own or BFFs kids they wish to push , how often are we now seeing familiar surnames in these lists, or ones with connections to the former glory day players, just because the parent could play does not automatically equate to an elite level offspring......so it will unfortunately most likely continue on this same path.
