Asia U/16 Champs 2017

With the U/17 FIBA Oceania tournament wrapping up and the U/16's done and dusted the next BA team selected will be the squads for the new 16 and under Asia Champs. Looking at the best 2001 born players that competed at the U/18's in Townsville and some potential future 2002 born talent from the U/16's included in the squads.
Not blessed with great size but some real perimeter fire-power and quicks in both groups. There may be a few more in the squad but these would be the core group IMO. Remember that U/16's and U/18's are two different levels of competition so those 2001 players listed below competed against the recent talent group that represented Australia in Guam.

Can't compare the 18's with the 16's! Apart from Wigness who is a certainty the 01 athletes in the boys are better at this stage

OP
If you were at the 16 nationals, you weren't watching the girls very closely. Potter yes. Others no. Need to be able to do more than shoot a lot.
A few other girls from the top 4 would have to be considered.
Melbourne
Riley
Van der Maas
Maybe a few others.

In the boys, Tassie had an '01 big who was selected in 18s this year but didn't make it to Nationals, I assume through injury but not sure. I think he would be worth a look in a group that's thin up front.

Other than that, sandgroper I think your list is pretty solid. Hopefully some of the other '01 kids throw themselves in the mix. I'm curious as to how many of the '02 kids BA will invite to camp given the apparent talent discrepancy between the age groups (at least right now). Williams (WA) and Simons (NSW) the next best '02 candidates?

hardest position to choose is center for both teams.

Girls C
6'3 Anstey, 6'3 Jefferson, 6'3 Ayliffe, 6'3 Hannan, 6'4 Johnson, 6'5 Rees
Last u17- 6'4 Magbegor, 6'4 Mcspadden, 6'5 Cochrane

Boys C
6'6 Simons, 6'7 Crowe, 6'7 Igbenoba, 6'8 Green, 6'8 Tsapatolis, 6'10 Walsh
Last u17- 6'8 Dalton, 6'10 Froling, 6'10 Colina

Not much between them.

275 I'm struggling to come up with which Green you mean. NSWM? He would be a stretch, surely?

The boys might get some leeway with rebounding strength at C given what Jackson has shown he can do. With not a lot of dominant scorers or shot blockers in that group, it's probably more about having a couple of bodies available to throw at any genuinely big kids from other teams.

Yeah, green from last years metro. Would be a stretch...

Personally I'd take Tsapatolis, Jackson, Steiner but am unsure as to the other 2

You wouldn't take any of the 02 girls to camp to see how they go against 01 players?

5'6 Henderson (aggressive pg- good leader 82ft%, 35% 3pt)
13 pts, 6 rbds, 4 asts
5'6 East (consistent pg 75 ft%, 37% 3 pt)
20 pts, 5 reds, 3 asts
5'8 Riley (aggressive guard with range almost 40%3pt)
12 pts, 4 rbds, 5 asts
5'9 Melbourne (well rounded get to the rack guard)
14 pts, 8 rbds, 5 asts
6'0 Potter (quick athletic-leading scorer in tournament)
20 pts, 8 rbds
6'0 Cotton (well rounded sf 89ft%'35% 3 pt)
13 pts, 8 rbds, 3 asts
6'1 Van der Maas (shot 90ft% and almost 50% 3 pt)
12 pts, 5 rbds
6'2 Barber (mobile pf with range)
13 pts, 8 rbds
6'5 Rees (mobile - tallest player 01/02)
11pts, 11 rbds

It's about time we start bringing more people into camp to go against each other and actually test them.
like 25-30 player camps, (5-6 best players per position)
not the normal take 15, and reduce to 12...

The USA have a pool of 120-150 players every time they choose a squad.
A lot of the euro teams do the same.

It's all about the $$ unfortunately! BA roll out all of these programs but are significantly restricted with national junior squads. The U17s that recently went to the Oceania Championships didn't even have a selection camp?? At very best they would have a squad of 18-20.

This is why we lose so many kids to football and netball.

I think if there was a fair tryout there would be a number of girls not mentioned that would prove far too good for a lot that were mentioned.
But I don't think that's going to happen!!

I watched the u16 americas in which USA won, Canada 2nd, Argentina 3rd, Colombia 4th.All qualified for next years u17 World Cup.
USA look very very good. unbeatable it looks like. They booted the coach after last years historic semi final loss to us. Had a camp with 150 players before choosing the final squad.

The euro u16 teams have been announced recently and they are much taller than previous years. All positions...

We were one of the biggest and fastest teams last year, but we won't be any of those next year.

Generally those athletes that are in their respective NITP/NPP squads are measured and tested regularly so the National Coach U/16-17 would have test results plus their performances at National Champs performances to base their selection in a squad. The 01 age group is decent in both genders and apart from the 02 male PG in the Qld Nth team that won gold, they would be far superior to the other 02 born athletes.
The question is apart from the above mentioned athlete what U/16's from the recent championships would feature against the better U/18's from Townsville? I was at both championships and the U/18's was well above the U/16's.

From your list you missed the second and fourth overall scorers respectively at the championship that are both 01 or first years? I wont name them as they are under 18.

And some of those girls wouldn't make the squad if it was 30+??

Did you just randomly pick out some names???

I would choose a much quicker more mobile squad for Asia, with height not being a major factor, given our opponents.

6 quick guards, 3 quick forwards, and 3 quick mobile bigs.

worlds would be
5 guards(2pg, 1cg, 2sg), 3 forwards(2sf, 1cf), 4 bigs(1pf, 1 pf/c, 2c)

Play to your strengths. Midget ball is not Australia's strong point as we can see at u19 worlds this week.

Going small would be the dumbest strategy imaginable.

Reply #641190 | Report this post

"Going small" is a misleading term, anyway. It's about big bodies who can play smart and fast. I think 163 has a reasonable point about plodding bigs not being necessary for Asia, where we're unlikely to encounter 7'0" back to the basket posts anchoring offences.

But, if we're going to see those big bodies come worlds, is it worth taking some bigger, slower kids to Asia for the sake of continuity? Only if we can still qualify, IMO.

And 190, to say 'play to your strengths' and then disregard that the strength of particular age groups could be different seems strange. As discussed above, there isn't much stand-out size in the middle for the '01/'02 boys. They have a number of very impressive guards and wings, though.

I think you would pick at least 6 guards for Asia and work on the bigs for Worlds. The 01 guards in both Girls and Boys is very good. Lots of standouts at the completion of the week.

A couple of 6'2 girls that are quicker than some of the guards.
Those are the ones we should be taking for Asia in the post.

The 6'3-6'5 girls we have (and there's about 7) are all quite slow and need a lot of development.
