Ten has always been the 3rd network. The wonky shopping trolly of the industry with 7 and 9 having good 4 wheels.
FTA TV as it is has had its day. It is towards the end of its product lifecycle thanks to the internet, pay TV, and on demand TV. Those products offer a consumer the choice they want. As a result, advertising revenues have plummeted as advertisers follow consumers to the internet for their entertainment.
Shows have changed too, as well as the content. In the heyday of TV, Prime time consisted of after school cartoons, Gilligans Island/Hogans Heroes/Mash/Brady Bunch etc, followed by the news, a game show, a main show from 830 and then a late night show like Don Lane etc.
The criticism of "The Project" is quite valid. When it started the show was basically a pisstake on the news. Comedians would make jokes about the situation, interviewers etc from off takes and extensions of the footage. Now, it seems it is just a platform to push a dressed up political agenda in a politically correct environment.
As revenue streams have dried up like the Darling basin, the networks have moved to "reality TV" shows which are low cost, mainly due to bogans looking for their 15 minutes of fame. They are also rather setup and this frustrates the viewer. Having spoken to people who have on these shows there's a low of situations that have been fabricated. These reality shows have "vote lines" that generate an alternative stream of money. While it was once funny watching a fat chick in her pyjamas slap her butt while wearing bunny ears, YouTube is full of people doing silly stuff.
It is sad to see any business go into administration. There are a few structural changes that are happening to the industry but it is also a wakeup call for the industry to really have a look at their business plan and "tidy up their menu"
