3-on-3 basketball added to Olympic Games

As expected, the International Olympic Committee has voted to include 3×3 basketball in the Olympics, starting in 2020 in Tokyo. There will be men's and women’s divisions. FIBA, the international governing body of basketball, has tried to grow this version of the sport, seeing the potential of something like beach volleyball. To that end, there is even a 3-on-3 world cup that tips off in a couple of weeks in France.

There is also a 3-on-3 league coming to the USA this summer — the Big3. Put together by Ice Cube and some investors, it will feature a number of former NBA players in sort of a barnstorming tour of the USA. The league has potential and tips off June 25.

Not sure this is a great decision to be honest. I know FIBA are pushing this format but as usual they've just got dollars signs in their eyes and think putting this faster paced and more accessible version of the game on the world's biggest stage risks hurting traditional 5-on-5 basketball especially at the international level.

While the Olympic version of 3×3 half-court hoops has a lot of similarities to your local park pick-up game, it has some differences too. There’s a 12-second shot clock, and play never stops — after a made basket the team that gave up the bucket gets the ball and clears it out to the arc then can instantly start. There’s no make-it-and-take-it rule, and the ball does not have to be checked before play starts. Also, there is a 10-minute time limit, in case nobody gets to 21. It’s basically a sprint.

Think Big Bash and it's effect on Test cricket.

Australia is pathetic at this format. Now that it is an Olympic sport let's see some improvement.

I don't see a problem with 3x3. It isn't an artificial made-up sport - streetball has existed forever.

I see it more like volleyball - they have both their indoor and outdoor versions at the Olympics, now we do too.

That's because australia pick crap players, just like the senior and junior teams.

Add this to the long list of sports that shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Who you got for Australia 3 on 3?

I've got Simmons, Exum and Patty.

Simmons and exum have experience playing together. Patty for speed.

The more professional 3 on 3 becomes the more it will become a 3pt shootout. Only snipers and dominant rebounders to clean up will be valuable.

And before you come in and say thats how the NBA is becoming where a 3pt shot is worth 50% more than a 2pt shot, in 3 on 3 a 3pt shot (counts as 2) is worth 100% more than a 2pt shot (counts as 1).
So imagine how many 3s would be shot in the NBA or any pro league if they counted as 4!

Yeah, I'm a bit sceptical about 3 on 3 as a high level sport. I've watched a fair bit of the FIBA version and I'm not really impressed.
Not writing it off completely, as the game will become more refined as it (if it) becomes more popular, but to me it doesn't have much going for it as a spectator sport.
As Melbourne Boy alluded to, I don't think the 1 point - 2 points thing helps either. The one thing that the 3-on-3 game should have going for it is more spacing to work with, which is more conducive to taking it to the rim or at least drive-and-dish type play, but the scoring system discourages that.

I'm glad it's getting a go though.

Is this replacing, or in addition to normal 5v5?

Anon #606 I expect you will have 2 seperate squads for both teams, a boomers team and a 3 on 3 team.

The mens & womens basketball tournament at the Olympics runs the entire 2 weeks so I doubt they will chop and change from 5 v 5 to the 3 v 3 format.

FIBA has a global 3x3 tour so teams will qualify through that. These players are 3x3 pros. Pros from 5x5 won't be involved and rightfully so.

Why would Simmons, Mills and Exum play 3on3 when they could play for the real team and get a legit medal. The comp will be filled with nobodies

Ricey, agree with you Simmons, Mills and Exum are 5on5 players and should not be selected for 3x3, it's a completely different game and players need to be playing it regularly and training specifically for it, if we think we can drop in players who don't make the 5on5 Olympic squad, we will be severely spanked.
However, don't agree with the "legit medal" comment, an Olympic medal is an Olympic medal and by the time 2020 comes around we will have plenty of 3x3 pros in Aus.
Pretty sure if you compare 3x3 with say beach volleyball being added some years back, Kerry Potthurst and Nat Cook would not be considered nobody's.

"I've got Simmons, Exum and Patty"

Why do people keep saying shit like this? Wake up call: The 5 on 5 will be going on at the same time. Those guys are on that team. They're not going to play on both, and no one in their right mind would choose the 3 on 3 team over that traditional one.

I'd be surprised if even fringe/outside Boomers took it on.

You still don't get it. 3x3 has players who solely play 3x3 all year round and have their own FIBA tour! No 5x5 blowins will be in it, that's like saying when beach volleyball was introduced that it would be filled with volleyball players. Different discipline.

Their yearly tour will act as Olympic qualifiers so how exactly would 5x5 players magically get in? lol

I think you'd see guys that are playing in Ice Cube's comp over in the USA giving it a go. Blokes that are still fit but not upto making an nba roster. Hard to see too many current players playing high level such as nba and euro league wanting to give it a go and potentially risk injury and future contracts. You already see this with the 5v5 comp at the olympics. Having said that I'd be very keen to see someone like Jimmer Fredette play.

Again I doubt it.

40 something year olds playing in Big3 for two months of the year vs. 3x3 grinder pros in their 20s who play all year round in the official FIBA tour.

who wouldn't want to see Allen the answer Iverson or white chocolate williams in the next olympics?? It'd bring a lot of viewers to the sport compared to these 3x3 grinder pros you refer to

Not disagreeing with you. But Iverson or a Williams aren't going to be grinding the FIBA tour all year long to amass the necessary amount of points.

Do you think they would go to the effort to qualify to then go to prestigous locations such as Mongolia (last 3x3 event held last week). I don't think so.

Actually the US team that lost to Serbia in the 2016 world championship had a 5x5 blowin by the name of Stefhon Hannah. He was back-to-back D-league DPOTY few years ago.

many times we'd often play 3 on 3 out there on the old home court... 40 percent harder on the body than 5 x 5 ..
feeling pretty tired... notta fan of 3 x 3....

Definitely harder on the body, yet a lot on here are name dropping ex-NBA/Big3 40yr olds to be in it. lol

3 on 3 a specialised game requiring specialised players who only focus on it?

Give me a team of Lebron, Durant and Kawhi and we'll see how specialised it is.

This is why it's so dumb: if the players who would be best at it aren't playing it, it is irrelevant.

Can't we just combine marathon running with pistol shooting or something and invent a new sport, it would be more exciting than this...

Just a cash grab from dodgy FIBA who are salty about making no money from the NBA.

That may be so but those players play in pro leagues and won't have the time to play the variant.

Also true FIBA cash grab to make money out of 3x3/streetball scene but if Big3 takes off watch it decimate FIBA3x3 and they will be back at square one like they are with the five-on-five games vs. NBA. FIBA = LOL.
