Should zone defense be banned?

I watched both games today and the Hawks zone brought the sixers to a standstill. Randle and sobey were ineffective hoisting outside bricks. It was tough to watch.

From an entertaining/ ratings perspective it was so much better when the guards were able to penetrate and finish at the cup or kick it out to shooters.

The same thing happened in the united game where united started hot then the game went totally flat in the second half in front of 10,000 as well.

You want the stars to be able to shine. Last week we were all talking about how breathtaking randle was this week he couldn't get involved and he had to keep passing to the wing where teys had to take shots. Sorry no one is turning on the telly to see teys they want to randle break his man down and be unstoppable

Do you really think NBL refs could call illegal defense?

I don't think it should be banned, I just think that there needs to be rule alterations that give the offense the advantage when driving the lanes.

No, just ban useless coaches who can't prepare their team to play against one

Just bring in defensive 3 seconds, problem solved.

Simple solution: ref calls out players getting into zone and the first player he calls out can't move, but may pivot or rotate. Here's the catch: he can't move until his team scores the next basket. This would sort out illegal defence quick smart let me tell you.

Agree that we need to clear the driving lanes. Ferguson was supposed to be the best dunker we've seen yet I barely remember any opportunities he's had to dunk

Hard to dunk it when you're on the bench

i don't like the idea of 'banning' zone defense, but I don't mind defensive 3sec

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! There is a reason all star games get boring. Running an offence flawlessly to generate an open shot is part of the game. Changing you defence to stop the other team is what makes basketball, basketball.

There are rules to favour the offence attacking the basket, 8/10 charges in NBL are probably block's.

also Adelaide lost because they kept settling for open 3pt shots, never took a moment to wonder why they were open...

Yep, gets my vote for stupidest thread of the year.
Just another Adelaide fan butthurt because their team sucks.

How about you hire a coach that doesn't suffer from a Napoleon complex, and knows how to coach adult basketball. Then try hiring more than one decent player.

Simple fact is that the more threatened a team is, the more they will concentrate on shutting down Randle. It probably should happen more than it does.

Man defence played well is much harder to beat than zone defence played well, at high levels. We all know this, this is why all our teams play man as their staple defence. If Zone D is giving the NBL teams trouble then this is a major failing of the offensive coaching. Watching a team tear apart a zone D is highly entertaining, and done well, you don't see it for long because the Zone is pulled quick smart. The rules shouldn't be changed to overcome coaching failings. The question is should the rules be changed to orient the game more towards 1 on 1 contests (which is why the NBA has defensive 3 seconds). My view is "no" - it is supposed to be a team game; if they want entertainment based on 1 on 1 contests then create a basketball equivalent of 20-20 cricket.

Zone defences are effective because players are not used to making 6,7,8 passes before shooting and an inability of teams to exploit the high post. It should limit dribble penetration but that depends a lot on the abilities of attackers.
Then of course you have to shoot well from mid range and outside.

You might be onto something there. DJ would be a specialist.

I agree with all the posters suggesting the issue is with coaching. Good coaches nd players know that ball movement and player movement off the ball is what beats zone defence. Good ball and player movement opens lanes, and provides for open looks for shooters.

Joey can't coach, so his only resort is to wave his arms at the refs and cry like a baby when opposition coaches confound his perfect offensive system by shutting Randle down.

You Joey haters, forget he's missing two starters! In an already young team where your knockdown shooter, Drmic look like a DP. Take out Ogilvy and rotnei and see what happens, zone or not! They lack depth, not coaching.

Dazz, I don't know why you bother wasting the keyboard strokes, you're a first class troll and hater. No contructive points to your arguments, just grade school insults.

How can you judge purely based on offensive efficiency lol, there's this little thing called defence that is kind of important.

Haha, so because one team struggled against a zone in one game, it has to be banned??? OK
