What makes a Good Coach

Have been reading a lot about our men's and women's coaches, critical of their methods, what we would do in their stead and who would make a better coach.

But what do we all think a coach should be, what is his or her role. Is it a teacher, mentor, coordinator?

Because before anyone can say who would make a better coach I think it needs to be determined what is it we want in our coaches. What is their role.

This will naturally vary from age group to age group so let's stick to our two national teams.

Having Dunigan on your team can make a real average coach look like a hall of famer

depends on the age group to what is the highest priority.
Instilling confidence/trust in individual and team ability across all age groups.

At juniors, teaching, having fun etc. At seniors, bringing every one together , working as team for a common goal. All playing to the team tactics/game plan.

If we're talking about national team level then 1) coaches barely get any time with their full group, and 2) we're generally talking about experienced players who already know what they're doing on a court.

So I'd say that the most important thing is being able to get the group to buy completely into your system. That means having a good system to start with - one that players can understand and believe in, and one that suits the abilities of the players at your disposal. And secondly it means being a good communicator so that everyone understands the big picture of the system, and also on an individual level they understand their role within it.
All that in a limited amount of time, and to be executed against quality opponents.

And to be able to identify sensible options and alternatives when things don't go well, and then to communicate them clearly so that they are implemented correctly.

By getting a group of individuals and turning them into a functional unit.
In juniors to teach fundamentals, make better players but most importantly serve as a role model that will benefit the kids not just in sport. Sickening to see some junior coaches that carry on and act like absolute tools, but clubs condone them as long as they bring results.

Great players make good coaches by media standards. Leading with humility, purpose and a resalute philosophy by athlete and parent standards.

Would like to see a coach sit in a box like footy and see it from above. The game looks different from the top. At least an assistant relaying to the bench coach even.

If you've got a player on four fouls very early in the second half you sub him out not let him foul out with 17 minutes left, leaving you exposed on the inside
