NBL Predictions

About 3 weeks until the start of the season so time for some predictions.

1. Sydney (Same group as last season plus great pick up in Worthington.)

2. Melbourne (New coach, lost most of their old slow guys, and Anstey/Stiff/Hoard/Mottram/DT front court is best in the league if healthy. D-Mac/Tucker/Corletto backcourt isn't too shabby either.)

3. Townsville (Same core as last year and if Abney can add defence and rebounding they will be tough.)

4. Adelaide (Assuming Maher/Farley/Rychart continue their best impersonation of last season's Washington Wizard's trio of 20ppg players in Arenas/Hughes/Jamison, we will be top four material. Will need Holmes to have a break out year and Forman/Hill to regularly contribute if we are to improve on last season's result.)

5. Brisbane (They could end up winning the championship but will start off slow with so many new key players. Last season it seemed as though they had 4x 3 point specialists on the court at all times so while they are bigger this season, they will not have nights like our ill-fated final. Rucker will need to be healthy and have a great year for them to be top 4.)

6. Wollongong (Darnell will prove a big loss despite Groves being a big time scorer. Picking up Castle and Rampton were decent budget additions and once again they will be tough defensively and pick up their fair share of regular season wins.)

7. Perth (Could move higher if they pick up an All Star type import point guard. Burston/Rogers is a decent centre combination but I wouldn't put 5c on that combo staying injury free.)

8. Hunter (Have better size than any other team but they have lost Kavossy/Wethers import duo that was probably only combination to rival Farley/Rychart. Their new imports have big shoes to fill.)

9. Cairns (This is assuming that Burgess is out for most of the season and his import replacement is a dud as rumoured. Cattalini's run of luck of playing on donut teams appears to be continuing.)

10. New Zealand (Not much improvement from last season. In fact their roster looks weaker.)

11. West Sydney (Have now lost their entire starting 5 from Grand Final team in Trahair, Rillie, Mackinnon, Dwight and Hinder. Harvey might lead the league in scoring and Horvath is quality but little else unless Markovic translates his junior international form into big NBL numbers.)

Some good teams in the NBL this season and you can pretty much roll a dice on those top 6 teams. Going to be some woeful rounds in the tipping as most teams are competitive.

1) Sydney: Retaining the core and added ROY Worthington is gonna be huge, plus Kendall is back. Tough roadtrip to the Habour this year. Gotta be No 1 at this time of year.

2) Melbourne (agree with you Stephon in your comments, only concern is how will the club respond to no Gaze and Westover running the squad)

3) Brisbane (how can anyone compete with these names of Bradtke, Rucker, Copeland, McKinnon, Egan, Brannen, Black. They could be No 1 if they gel together)

4) Adelaide (core retained and fingers crossed the young'uns step it up)

5) Townsville (slow starters to the season and then come on strong, tuff in the Swamp)

6. Wollongong (defence matters)

7. Perth (any team that has Ronaldson shouldn't make the playoff. All I can say that if there import PG sucks then they won't make the playoffs)

8. Cairns (Cat, Mee and Melvin will sneak them into the playoff's. No Burgess will kill them)

9. Hunter (Unknown imports, but have added the overated Trahair and are still overgrown monster. Will be competetive, but will missout on a tie breaker)

10. West Sydney (weak outside of Markovic, Horvath and Harvey)

11. New Zealand (terrible..........won't win a game in Australia and will be below .500 at home)

Basically you could throw a blanket over the top 6. Tuff tuff season ahead. It could by anyone's season and the fortune's of teams may be dictated by injuries and pure basic luck.

I agree with these predictions. Hunter have lost the best clutch import pairing in the league. With Dwight, West Sydney had that guy who would intimidate opponents but could also hit shots to bring the Razors back into games. Harvey will be a leading scorer, but I don't know if it will be enough. Without Burgess, Cairns will be a lesser team. What have NZ done to improve over the off-season? I think Adelaide have improved, but then Sydney will be more or less regaining Kendall and bringing in Worthington -- they're my pick for top spot during the regular season. Brisbane, as has been suggested, may start slow, but you can't deny that talent -- they will be a very tough team.

I don't think Melbourne will go far without the Gazes.

A reprise of my predictions:

1: Sydney (again, looking stronger than last season)

2: Townsville (I think will be best improvers on last season, still got some great young guys)

3: Brisbane (Full of champions, but will be top heavy and slow, with a number of old players)

4: Melbourne (very big side, with the fate of this team in the hands of Anstey. How good a coach Westover is will be important)

5: Adelaide (Hoping for better, but with an injury to any of about 7 guys and the Sixers will be in trouble)

6: Perth (Burston/Rogers will spend most of the year injured. High roster turnover will be unsettling. Backcourt questionable)

7: Cairns (Huge improvement to roster but needs Burgess to make finals impact)

8: Wollongong (stuffed - going for fall, can't cover for loss of Mee)

And competing for the wooden spoon:

9: New Zealand (off season trading has been questionable, pre-season showings against Melbourne pitiful)

10: Hunter (no Wethers/Franklin, no scoring)

11: West Sydney (No good players, crap coaching, nuff said)
