look at the population of Victoria. Its simply economies of scale.
Not true,
All throught the 50's and 60's SA was the leading state. Winning most Senior National Championships. Victoria still had a larger population, but we had a great basketball culture, with a large Latvian, Hungarian etc basktball population.
During the 80's and 90's Victoria developed a competition method by which the best teams and players were graded to play in the top grades. At the same time they had a massive level of investment in stadium which drastically increased the number of players in the participation area.
Recently Victoria has decreased it's dominance at the elite level. By expanding the number of teams in the elite level competition from 12 out to 20 they have cut themselves down by having more non-competitive games. Thus their best players are not having to work hard to win. And this will probably change in the near future.

This is interesting on how vic's have changed and evovled, especially in the light that sa are currently looking at changing, so would be good to get some victorian feedback.

Anonymous is spot on.
If Vic through VJBL continue with the 20 team structure at their championship level then they will seriously dilute the competition and that will have an impact on player development.
As for the first post, I'm with Skyhook.
I am a Victorian, and have coached in the VJBL and for Basketball Victoria in their programs for 8 years now.
Victoria has fallen back to the pack and it is mainly due to two things.
1. AFL have continued to do a great job of attracting the best young athletes.
2. VJBL have gone to a two conference, 20 team competition for the top grade.
The first is a battle we will never win but we can do a much better job at competing.
The second can be fixed at the next AGM. One top division of 10 teams.
Of these things happen then look out!!
I think SA do a very good job, as does WA and QLD, who are the next power. Others are a little down because of resources/player numbers/facilities/coaches etc... Not sure why NSW don't perform better. Any thoughts??
NSW coaches are terrible. Their kids are so far apart that they rarly play with the best kids competing against each other. They play on Sundays and therefore dont train as often as other states. Most of their games are domestic comp games with little or no serious competition.

Being in the Vic coaching program now, after being an Adelaide junior there are a stack of differences, especially in the ITC programs.
When i was at sasi we trained once a week after school starting at 1hour in U14s and progressed up to 2hrs in U18s. In the vic ITC program they do early morning (before school) sessions 2-3 times a week. Not only do they play rep ball (as mentioned 20 teams play Championship (same as Div 1)) but they all play domestic and the school basketball is very highly regarded and the talent is not limited to 2 - schools (like Cabra and Mercedes). And of course, as mentioned there are more kids to choose from being 3x the population of adelaide.
All this is reffering to the Metro program but Vic Country do better than most.
Why??

Many country kids also play in the Metro comps...most clubs would have a number of country players...so they play and train domestic at home and play and train at rep with a metro club...then add contry ITC, many are involved 5/6 days a week..

The competion in victoria is greater than other states. The fact they the best players in vic play against each other every week wheater they are from country or metro, in a very serious competion where sometimes you have to pay to watch them. Vic has the biggest basketball population as well so they are going to also produce some really great athletes to go along with the skill devolopment that they get from local comp, ITC, rep etc. Why don't they any good teams? That was just a stupid coment!
