Illawarra @ New Zealand, 17 JAN
Illawarra did it easily earlier in the week. They seem to have the Breakers number. A repeat dose here?

Can only hope so, thats where my money is. They were brutal last game, Breakers couldnt control the tempo at all, cant see how that gets rectified that quickly. Unless non of the Hawks guns are firing, Hawks easily again.
New Zealand have championship pedigree and I think they show it tonight. They can't just let a team run all over from for a 4-0 series domination if they're serious about contending.

As a Sixers fan, I'm hoping Illawarra whip some butt today.
I am thinking that the Breakers won't go down and die that easily. They are hurting and there are rumours of team chemistry being bad, but they are at home and they know that Adelaide is right behind them, like an Adelaide driver tailgating along South Rd in peak hour traffic. One mistake, and the Breakers will cope it.
That'll make this game a delicious game to watch.
The refs in Auckland let a lot of stuff go, so I'm expecting a lot of argy-bargy and a bit of lip on the court. There's certainly a lot of jibes available on offer and with two former (unwanted) Breakers (Forman and Penney) on the pine, there's an opportunity to rub it in.
The Breakers won't want to be embarrassed on their own court and so if Illawarra want to put a stake in there hearts, they better drive in it hard.
I'm tipping this to be closer than most Poindexters think. Breakers should lead this game at times, but the more disciplined Hawks will get this in the end.

What are these rumours people were eluding to, ie who's allegedly banging whose missus?

I think people took me using Nth Melbourne FC as an example of a solid veteran team being ruined by internal issues as meaning someone on the Breakers was doing a Carey!

Paul started that rumour. I won't buy in to it.
The Breakers look much better so far. It seems they have all kissed and made up with each other's wives.

Not a good start for Illawarra.
NZ's bigs are destroying them so far. Pledger, Vukona, Wesley and Charles are 9/10 for 22 points at quarter time.
2 fouls for Ogilvy and Forman too.

Foreman picked up his 4th foul in the 2cnd quarter

Refs giving NZ lots of help here.
Ogilvy and Formans 3rds both incorrect calls. Charles J jumped over Ogilvys back.. no call.
NZ are like the Unitd at home. Protected species!.

Hawks have controlled the last 2 quarters, then NZ have rallied late to keep the deficit even. Hawks need to close the last quarter better to get the win.

Some poor defence from the Hawks bench allowed the Breakers to open a gap that could be costly.

The refs have been so hot on Forman tonight. He got the Matt Hodgson treatment.

Beveridge a top coach.
The fuck was AJ doing then?? Shocking hook
Why do teams foul late when you could just get a stop and have last possession? Silly by Tim c

Can't believe NZ didn't foul Martin as he bought the ball up the court. I hurled a thousand expletives at the TV

Wow. 3.25 to go in OT. Jackson fouls the hell out of Martin on the break..no call. Ridicolous.

2 blatantly wrong calls. 1 each way.
And Lisch has just taken over!

How did NZ get the ball with 3secs left. Another bad decision. Lucky Webster can't make a clutch shot

Great game. Lucky the Breakers didn't score on that last possession since it looked like it should have been a Hawks ball.

Huge result.
Lisch is the MVP of the league.
The Breakers fall is just hard to believe.

Why o why did the Perth Wildcats not get Lisch a West Aussie girlfriend when he was playing for us rather than New South Wales girl :)
De-Lisch showing guys like Goulding and Webster who the real class of the competition is.
Victorian Wildcat, his first preference was to return to Perth but we already had Dolla Beal contracted at that position.
LV, re: the Breakers fall, they are still right amongst it. Don't write them off yet.

"Great game. Lucky the Breakers didn't score on that last possession since it looked like it should have been a Hawks ball."
It was a foul on Lisch, should have been two FTs for Webster. NZ didn't deserve to win this though, despite their awesome D, so many dumb plays and brain fades.
Also the fact they stopped running offence and just went to on-balls and isos when the Hawks clearly couldn't guard them when they got into early offence. Breakers with 64pts in 40mins after 1/4 time.
On the other hand great toughness from the Hawks, Lisch was amazing but their role players did a super job down the stretch.
D4444

Yeah, looked like their could have been contact in there but the ball definitely went out off Webster. Make up call?
Beverage best coach by far. Hawks will be hard to beat from here.

Anyway, great game and the right result in the end. Lisch just amazing!

All Vukona had to do was make at least 1 FT. Not good enough.
Breakers have away games to the United, Adelaide and the Taipans coming up. They have to win pretty much all those games to make the playoffs.
Mystro
Years ago
I put the loss down to Vukona's choke at the free throw line and Vickerman not instructing them to foul when up 3 in regulation. Out Coached and out played.
Class display from Lisch and Ellis came up big down the stretch in the absence of Penney.
On the bright side NZ were competitive but that didn't stop the season sweep or the slide out of the 4.
paul
Years ago
Don't forget Abercrombie's choke, missed a lay-up on a soft foul, then missed both FTs, then missed a wide-open three. Any of those would have sealed the deal.
Worst of all was not fouling when three up with next to nothing on the clock though.
paul
Years ago
NZ could still bounce back, they were awful offensively for most of today and their decision making was woeful, but the simple things they are getting wrong and their unwillingness to play aggressive offence says they are in trouble.
Abercrombie also missed 2 fts with under 4 mins left.
Poor ft shooting was always going to come back to bite the Breakers this season.
What about Webster jacking up rushed, contested 3s when there was still plenty of time left. One trick pony.

Mystro, sadly agree and some. Adelaide will be swept IF they get in, against any of the 3 other top 4 teams. Hawks would be worst match up that could get ugly.

I hope when the Sydney Kings fans are watching they realise that Kevin Lisch had agreed to become a Sydney Kings player this year but was turned down by Kings management so they could get Marcus Thornton.

Jack, I bet they quickly forgot that 90% once the FTs were missed and they were taken down in the second OT. Lost three straight and four of their last five.
mystro

Yes I was gutted with how they finished the game but happy they were at least competitive in this one despite playing well below their best. It made a nice change from simply not turning up and getting blown off the court.
