Where does this leave SCM BigV now?

I believe there were a number of clubs in D1M who applied to go to SCM but were knocked back to keep the conferences at 7 in each.

Would make sense to just promote the best applicant rather than have to comps that are too big to not be in conferences.

Melton and Casey both had very good arguments to be playing SCM

I believe that the Big V approved straight promotion for D1 winners to SCM at the AGM. Would make sense to just kick that in now and promote this years winners.

How can you say Casey deserve promotion?

They cant even win D1..

Melton deserve it, but would struggle!

That losing formula got them to Div 1 in the first place so never say never....

TBH though Casey have a team capable of playing at SCM level next season.

Melton absolutely deserve it.

Promoted from D2 to D1 after winning it. Worked hard and further developed the team and won D1. From what I hear they have recruited well this year and would be more than competitive in SCM.

To be fair Melton would be a better quality team than what Melbourne were going to have this year so you could argue it would improve the standard

Not sure on names but someone who played Waverly SCM last season. I do know everyone from last season has resigned.

Plus they would then sign an additional import. They had a decent player lined up in case their import from this year did not return.

You add to that surely once they are SCM they could recruit an additional player or two. Perhaps someone who is a SEABL quality player who would be willing to play SCM but D1.

Off the court they have done a lot to improve their professionalism of their team and the coaching structure with some more coaches getting involved that are of high quality.

You would think they at least deserve a crack at it.

Egg on Anderson and Sewell's face now, they are much to proud to reverse a decision to allow a Melton or Casey into SCM.

Midday, 2 days after the AGM and no official release on the SEABL website regarding the Melbourne Tigers. You'd think this would be big news for the competition and generate a bit of talk in what is traditionally a quiet time for the league.

I thought the SEABL going to BA was an upgrade. Certainly not the case...Clubs not getting value for money by BA.

Quelle surprise! Coverage of the WNBL is really poor this year too. Unfortunately, without TV most of the other areas seem to have gone backwards, rather than improved to cover for it.

Who would even play for this Tigers team? Their state champ team was horrid in BigV last year and if they fielded a similar team in SEABL they'd be a laughing stock!

Playing out of MSAC? Hopefully the show courts not the courts out the back which they sometimes used last year.
I'm not sure this team will get back any of the old "NBL" supporters that they originally lost when they became United.

I'm seeing the opposite.

There has been some classic rivalry's with many of the Current SEABL teams in the past that wouldn't exist with SCM teams.

This move could be a great opportunity to rekindle those rivalry's and stir the old emotions and supporters.

Tigers have had some epic clashes in the 80's and early 90's with Kilsyth, Ballarat, Geelong, Nunawading, Frankston etc.

Could be great for game promotion.

Just posted on SEABL web site:

Basketball Australia and the Melbourne Basketball Association are delighted to announce that the Melbourne Tigers Senior Men's team will be competing in the South East Australia Basketball League (SEABL) competition in 2016.

As the oldest basketball association in Australia, dating to the period prior to the formation of the Victorian Basketball Association in 1931, the Tigers have always aspired to and participated in the highest level of competition available.

With strong junior representation and adult domestic programs conducted across Melbourne, the Tigers hold firm to the key objective of providing elite participation at the highest level.

The elevation of the Tigers’ Senior Men’s team from Championship level in the Big V competition to the SEABL, is a positive step forward for the Melbourne Tigers Basketball Club.

It is expected that the Tigers’ senior women’s team will join the SEABL in 2017 and this staggered entry into the league by the club represents a responsible, reinvigoration of the Tigers senior brand.

"We have no doubt the move from the state championship in 2015 to the SEABL in 2016 for our men’s team will present a major challenge, but with some great new sponsors and a new administrative group, we believe we will be able to maintain the history of the Melbourne Tigers competing favorably," said club icon Lindsay Gaze.

The Tigers inclusion into SEABL was ratified at the SEABL Annual General Meeting over the weekend.

The AGM was a significant one in the history of the league as along with the Melbourne Tigers inclusion, the formal wind up of the league was passed and the transfer formalised, a process which began 12 months ago.

“This transfer formally completes the transition of one of Australia’s elite basketball competitions into Basketball Australia,” said General Manager of Competitions, Paul Maley.

“As an organisation that has recently undergone a near complete overhaul, we are excited about our ability to promote and manage a league that plays an important role in the Australian basketball pathway.”

“To have an iconic team like the Melbourne Tigers return to the SEABL only further strengthens what is already one of the highest standard basketball league in the country.”

The Melbourne Basketball Association would like to publicly thank the current membership of the SEABL for granting admission in 2016. Both Basketball Australia and the Melbourne Tigers look forward to a continued successful partnership beyond.
