Promising stats for foxtel. That would put us near the top 20-30 most watched shows of the night if 42 thousand was the 20th most watched show this time last week

Those figures look totally bogus. The NBL wouldn't be getting that on FTA let alone Pay TV which only a fraction of the population have.

I asked him why the ratings didn't show up on TV tonight, he replied with this:

"depends whether they use metro cap or STV. STV is most reliable & allows 4 regional areas on PAY"

Those numbers are bogus.
STV ratings are always rounded to the nearest 1000.
Twitter replies make no sense.
Someone needs to hit up this guy from the roar who has listed correct ratings in the past

I watch via foxtelplay, doubt that it would be recorded on any ratings.

If the games ever get onto fox 1,2,3 then they get shown in a lot more hotels and other places where there is increase coverage but wouldn't show on any ratings.

The NBL App with the push reminder that a game is about to start is a great feature.

Ratings for round 2:
Illawarra Hawks v New Zealand Breakers 39,611

Sydney Kings v Townsville Crocodiles 50,474

CairnsTaipans vs @TsvCrocs 21,781

MelbUnitedHQ vs @Adelaide36ers 15,293

SydneyKings vs @illawarrahawks 8,306

PerthWildcats vs @NZBreakers 1,560

39'000 and 50'000 are great numbers on Foxtel, and sit them just outside of the top 20 most watched things on those days. 21'000 and 15'000 are adequate numbers. 8'000 and 1,560 are slightly underwhelming, but all in all a solid week for NBL ratings.

Wed and Thurs will always rate better as there is not much live content on. Fri to Sunday there is a lot more choice so NBL ratings will always be lower.

The bloke who posts the ratings said he pulls his from the national subscription ratings figure, rather than the combined metro ratings, which could be the list above.

Out of interest, according to OzTam ratings reports, the capital city ratings for the Fox Sports News channel between 6-12pm each night has more than doubled since the NBL started.

If you take Brisbane out of the equation, where there has been no change, the numbers have approximately tripled.

Given the NBL only makes up about 20% of the 6-12pm slot through the week it must be bringing in some viewers. FSN has gone from only rating ahead of Eurosport and ESPN 2 to being middle of the road amongst the sports channels.

Just to add to that, the national Fox Sports News 6-12pm viewer numbers in homes with pay TV have also more than doubled since the NBL started.

Mind you, doubling an infinitesimal number probably just required one person with a ratings box to watch a game.

The return of Brisbane will be great for the game and ratings. Let's hope they bring in some entertaining imports and a competitive team.

My hope is they bring in a new team or two every year.

You're right Luuuc, the ratings aren't huge, but FSN is now comparable with some of the main sports channels. For NBL to deliver that while only being on 20% of the time is a promising start.

Happy to see a trend in a positive direction for sure, paul.
But just as I don't slit my throat over poor early ratings, I'm not cracking open the champagne just yet either.

It's a pity we're still stuck on 500. What's the timeline for that to change?
And speaking of infinitesimal, what are the chances of getting Fox Hoops Channel set up alongside Fox Footy? :p

Reply #563171 | Report this post

Infinitesimal!

I remember someone saying six rounds? I do wonder if Fox will keep the NBL on FSN given it has found a niche there? It's like our own NBL channel!

It's convenient for us to know where to look, I agree, but it really doesn't lend itself to being discovered by the average channel surfing sports fan.

Agree to an extend, but there are 10 sports channels on Fox and in the first four weeks of the NBL season FSN has been equal third or fourth in Pay TV 6-12pm ratings. Previous to that it was always last or second last.

The NBL has been notably a lot smarter this season, a lot of this may be the result of the Fox "Partnership". It was noticeable early when Wilson was signed as the basketball partner and they positioned the ball with the Wilson logo well in all of their promotions, then again with Chemist Warehouse - on Fox as well.

But the big thing is, with the NBL advertisements (billboards around the city, social media graphics and advertisements almost weekly in the Newspaper), they all have "All Games on Fox Sports" or "Only on Foxtel". It's advertising both NBL and Foxtel which gives value to both, and it also gives NBL legitimacy so people know it is broadcasted.

This shows clearly better integrated marketing to include sponsors, and as part of the NBL's talk-the-talk and early marketing walk-the-walk, it seems like people are starting to tune into the NBL more. You can imagine with another capital city in Brisbane on board, ratings can steadily boost next year as well.
