Congratulations to Steve on a great coaching career at Frankston.

Hopefully he will not be lost to the sport and another club will use his knowledge in some capacity.

Frankstons loss imo.

Matthews has had a great influence on so many kids at the club, and his knowledge and enthusiasm will be sadly missed. It's a real shame what they are doing to this once great family club!

Has always coached with the right attitude. Never about him, whether its juniors or seniors. He wont be out of this sport for long - plenty of clubs could do with Matthews involved in their program.

WOW someone is creating waves that have turned into tidal waves and it seems like there is a clean out of what they consider a threat to how they wish to do things. Great way to make people feel uncomfortable and uneasy about being somewhere; coaches, teams, players and families departing who have been loyal servants of this club. You can change things without alienating everyone; I hope they get it together and return to the once proud club it was; bring back Runchey if your unsure how to get it right and make it a place where people wish to be.

I read the article and it appears he was diplomatic but considered in his reasons for leaving. He didn't say the changes were wrong, just that he wasn't comfortable with the direction, so he thought it was the right time to move on.

Seen this happen few years back - heard Mckinnon lost/ousted Bob Mann in that episode. He was the founder of McKinnon and also a Mckinnon & BV Life Member.

Sad to see good people either moved on or feel the need to move on.

Would it by any chance have anything to do with current committe members or executive employees having children in the Blues junior program?

Have to wonder about their motives? Also, I think they are doing a very poor job in engaging and explaining their "VISION" with their members.

I've heard the management won't meet collectively with the Youth League or U20 players &/or parents.

I believe they will do one on one meetings that you have to book an appointment for.

Kind of makes you wonder what they are afraid of or what they are hiding, doesn't it?

Not to have a crack at Steve, Moreso the posters who are making out he's some sort of Saint. His wife coaches in the 18's and his daughter plays in that team, yet I (parent of an u/12's kid), have never seen him down at the courts on a Sunday morning. Yet by the same token I know that the Dandenong u12 girls have had both Larissa Anderson and Darren perry actually take training sessions this year, and I'm not talking about just the 12 1's. Maybe these sort of expectations are the reason he has resigned.

Senior coaches must have an interest in the club as a whole.

To anon #5749,my child played their for years, and was coached by Steve. His involvement in the junior program for over 20 years has been recognised by his Life Membership of the Blues! He, and his wife, have given thousands of hours of coaching and assistance to the kids that you probably don't even know about. The reason he resigned is due to arrogant management, and no direction from the Board. Maybe you should try and help out instead of bagging him. He is a true great of the club! Or take your kid to Dandenong where you think its better!

Wow #757 take a chill pill. I wasn't bagging him, just pointing out he's not involved in the juniors at all and that perhaps that's where the issue lies from the clubs perspective. You can't be the head of the girls program which the senior coach is, and rest on the fact that you worked with the juniors when your own kids were coming through, and somehow get a pass from working with the current juniors now, not how it works.

#759. What you don't understand is that Steve RESIGNED. The club had no "issue" with his involvement/non-involvement with the juniors. Anyway, after 25 years helping local kids, he probably deserves a break! As a new parent to the program, you unfortunately have never seen the club run properly like in the Runchey days. This current management have no idea about developing juniors at all levels. All they are concerned with are the elite, of which there will be none of due to lack of quality coaches. Just like Steve and his wife. Good luck at the Rangers!

I dont know how they can focus on the elite when the hard truth is frankston has not been an elite club for a very long time.

#759 You must be new to the club. I've coached in both boys and girls for last 6 years. I'm not good enough to coach a 1st team but that doesn't worry me. People like Steve have been a great help, and to say he doesn't help with the juniors is just wrong.

He has coached for years before his own kids came into the program.

This guy did NOT get fired he left right? And the reason he left is because he didn't agree with the PLAN or DIRECTION the club was going. So that means they had to have told him the PLAN and DIRECTION they are going in and it was not what he wanted to do.. So I guess they do have a PLAN and a DIRECTION they want to go so lets put that to bed and move on. As for the prospective of them just dealing with the elite only is pretty naive and subjective unless you can give an example. Yes, good luck at Rangers also because if you ask anyone who's been there for the past 4 years they will tell you the same thing about that place "it's going down hill". Frankston's issues are not unique every club goes through it. Knox is now, dandy went through it 6 years ago as well as now.. Sandringham is feeling a little of it now also. It's not the end of the world when a club has turnover or decides to go in a different direction. Raunchy had just as many naysayers as this new band does. So how bout we quit with the sky is falling and congratulate a great coach on a great career and wish he and his family well moving forward. Maybe he can come on here and share the clubs vision with us so people can stop guessing.

No .. and I quote

" There is a lot of change in direction going on down there. You either jump on board or you, well, say perhaps this is not in line with what I am thinking and you make the decision. I suppose that's where I got to with it. I'm not saying I'm right and they're wrong..I just think you've got to be on the same page as everyone. And personally I'm not convinced I was all that comfortable with that."

ICYMI no where in that statement does it actually say that he believes Frankston actually has a plan, it only states that there is a change in direction. You can interpret it anyway you like to suit your argument but for me his statement doesn't confirm your argument.

#946 you're obviously related to a Jolly or a Blackley. Steve and his wife are recognised as Life Members of that club due to their combined 50 years of coaching/playing for the Blues. Its disgraceful that people are allowed to make these false and derogatory statements on this site with clearly an agenda with no foundation!

The personal attacks are unnecessary and unproductive. They've both been good servants of the club, recognised by their life membership. You would like to think they leave with the clubs blessing and best wishes and their time at the club is looked back upon fondly. This is something that footy does really well, past players, coaches, etc always welcome at the club. Basketball unfortunately once you're gone, you're forgotten or the knives are out. Smh.

how was he put on the chopping block when he resigned? And personal attacks towards people and the club itself is all this forum is about so.....I thought this thread was going to be a tribute to a coach but just like always it turns negative towards the club and others then eventually him. I don't even know how it gets to that after someone decides to move on or was he fired???

Interesting that a life member leaves a club and someone who has been there for 25 years. Yet they make no posts on there social media or website about it. Probably saus a lot about how that place is run and who by.

It`s simple, either things are done there way and there way only or its see ya latter. The same for the youth league issues. Didn`t like that the BIG V wasn`t letting them get there own way so they packed up and left.

The immaturity and emotional based decisions made there is equal to the kid you used to play street cricket with as a child who took his bat and ball and went home when he was out and didn`t like it.

Clubs are what they are if you don't like it don't buy their product. If you stay and complain in public forums your part of the problem. Steve gave and he was given a salary and an opportunity to coach at the highest level the club offers they owe him nothing but a thank you. Just because you serve at a club for 25 years doesn't give you the keys to the joint. It also doesn't make you an expert. Don't use Steves departure to further your idiotic cause. He was a good coach and and awesome person You think you honor him by trashing the club I think you just make him look selfish and like a quitter . Frankston isn't playing by his rules so he's taking his bat and ball and going to another club? That's what I would be concluding from all these posts and I hope that's not the case.
