Could the NBA eliminate or partner with FIBA?

With the NBA so worried about leasing their stars out to the national teams is it possible to go down one of two options:

1. Partner with FIBA to build the World Cup up to the spectacle it deserves to be.

2. Start a completely new world championship, solely run by the NBA.

Option 1 would allow FIBA to continue to run the event and its lead up in its entirety, but look to reimburse owners for players who are competing from various NBA teams, thus eliminating some of the risk associated with them playing.

For instance the San Antonio spurs have potentially 8 players who could suit up for their nation in upcoming world cups. The partnership directs 0.5% of the events profits to the NBA team "leasing" their player. So by having spurs players playing in the world cup they are practically a temporary share holder, and would receive 4% of the profit. The NBA would also receive a 10% share for example in return for helping FIBA with promotional work to boost interest.

Option 2 is the far more crude option, with the NBA simply starting a rival event with a view to retain all profit from the event. Over time eliminating FIBA completely.

Obviously Option 1 or something similar would be preferred, thoughts on the possibility or the viability of this?

#2 would be unlikely.

Having one country controlling a world sporting championship seems a bit unlikely, I would have thought. Other countries wouldn't accept that, would they (except for cricket, I suppose)? I imagine IOC would be uncomfortable with that as well and would not replace FIBA with NBA as its basketball affiliate. That might lead to FIBA banning NBA players, coaches and referees from the Olympics. Lots of countries outside of USA wouldn't like that, Australia included.

How does soccer manage this issue?

2 different things - this day and age - the country rep is an honor and a privilege but it is a different pinnacle to pro sports.

when the concept was set up state and country had more total control and influence over individuals - here in australia anyway.

just IMO

Each player regardless of who they are should represent the same % of money and this should be reimbursed into the league they come from.

I think small-town NBA teams would then become hot-beds for foreign talent which would benefit their brand internationally.

Having said that, the olympics is still considered the pinnacle, something pretty drastic would have to happen to change that.

They have already taken Option 1. They have a place on the FIBA commission and the World Cup format and overall international calendar have been revamped.
