Ringwood Hawks SCM - Biggest choke in SC History?

Ringwood were so far out in front of the entire league this year, they were the unbeatable championship favorites but were eliminated last night in their prelim final.

Does last nights shock loss at home to McKinnon shape up as the greatest choke from a title favourite in the league history?

Teams make the preliminary final stage for a reason.....

It is because they are bloody good and do plenty right !!

Give McKinnon some credit, at this stage of the season their are favourites but they are only marginal favourites because all teams left are capable.

Yep. Biggest choke. Finished well ahead of the pack and hammered Corio in the first round. Nobody factored McKinnon into the equation at all. This was supposed to be just another game for them.

McKinnon were okay this season, but most would have considered them to just be making up the numbers. Ringwood were a cut above all along. Really, they shouldn't have even been mentioned in the same breath.

I thought as much.
McKinnon, well done, but lets me honest Ringwood lost it, Mckinnon didn't win it.

This years Ringwood team on paper and by their massive results this season were by far the clear favorites... in August, finals, June, pre-season...when ever....they were always clear clear #1.

This is the biggest choke in SC history

Have to give kale harrison credit for his 4th quarter. Leading scorer all season.

If they made it and lost fair enough but to not make it at all hurts slot.

McKinnon are horrible Harrison is good but everyone else isn't very good, think this says more but how poor the SCM is this year

Agree, McKinnon are very average outside of Harrison.

You can call it "recruiting" but ringwood have slaughtered the league over the last few seasons picking off key starter after key starter from other clubs. This is a good result for a club that yes does win alot but they also do it by taking players from other clubs that are really important and leave them low in stocks.

There is a Big V finals thread for this, why start another thread just for this, keep it all together?!

Didn't Sandy lose multiple GF's to Warrnambool back in the early days after being favourites all season?

This warrants its own thread I reckon, its about the choke, not about the finals ongoing.

Full credit to McKinnon what a win. Jump on the Ringwood youtube channel and watch the last 6 minutes, Harrisons performance is one of the best you will see in a final.

Ringwood coaching staff had absolutely no answers when the Cougs came at them. I guess thats what happens when people at the club were apparently telling anyone that listens that the competition was too easy for them this year. Anything can happen in finals.

Alex Smith nominated for defensive player of the year, Blake Gallatly nominated for rookie of the year. Sam Ayre leading guard in rebounds and top 5 in assists. Axel Dench one of the leaders in PPG and FG% out of all forwards. Kale is a freak but to say the rest are useless is just stupid. Also you cant say its a fluke considering Mckinnon lost to Ringwood by only 2 points last game

And their bench is one of the leading scoring benches in the league. So to say they are one dimensional is stupid. Also watch them win the VYC championship next year, they have the most talented roster by far

They didn't guard snowball at all....wow that was embarrassing! Should have pull him out to space it a bit more poor coaching

In a one game final anything can happen. We have seen much bigger upsets in the NCAA tourney.
Over a 3 game series I think Ringwood would have figured things out and won although McKinnon were the best team on the day.

Also on biggest chokes. Ringwood in 2008 or 2010 won the 1st game of the grand final series v Waverley then lost the next 2 games at home for what was probably a much bigger choke.

Corio bay didn't even try against ringwood in the first week of finals not showing any cards. Corio would have beaten ringwood in the grand final but now they don't have to and will smash mckinon

ok can we please stop comparing the SCM to an NCAA final, just feel as though they are slightly different levels

Why are preliminary's not best of 3? Surely we want the best two teams in the GF. No disrespect to McKinnon but i doubt they would have won over 3 games, only a McKinnon die hard would debate that and now the league misses out on a legit GF.

Corio Bay will be delighted!

Not from any of these clubs, however one team won and one team lostit is pretty simple. If Ringwood deserved to be there they should have earn`t it.

There was a reason Snowballl was left open, I was at that game and thought it was a great way of coaching..

So when Ringwood lost the GF series to Waverley after being 1-0 up, the coach apparently blamed Waverley's physicality and the change in reffing style for losing. Now if you check out the Maroondah Leader this week its the leagues fault for the final structure they use. Hey Ringwood- it was a preliminary final and you played the bottom team left in the top 4 and lost. Ringwood Hawks- blame deflectors.

Have to agree with Ringwood coach. As a completely neutral observer, I want the best two teams in the GF.

Well done to McKinnon but I would have preferred to see Ringwood in it.

A best of 3 series should be used in Preliminary finals. In fact i believe all competitions should be restricted to a top 4 format with all final series being best of 3.

Finals should be reserved for the best teams. Individual games can be won by an out of the box individual performance which is exactly what happened on the weekend. Much harder to do over a 3 game series.

Best of 3 is what's happened in the past and the best teams emerged out of this. In a best of 3 series McKinnon would have to win through with 2 wins and series win which nobody could contest was an upset/fluke whatever.

Not sure how it is an upset when it was only a 1 point game last time they met. Ringwood failed to learn from that game and in turn got beat in the game that really mattered. Congrats to McKinnon for executing a plan that worked.

Not sure what the game plan is when an import is running that hot apart from him give him the ball and let him shoot. Kale got them over the line through his individual brilliance rather than coaching.

If Mckinnon win in the final then all this talk is a waste of time. They won so they are through to the finals get over it. If Ringwood are the best team they would have won regardless of a 1 or 7 game series.

You don't think the coaching ploy of leaving Snowball open helped McKinnon get the win? He had multiple open looks in the last that he should of buried, or better still, Ken should of replaced him with Weimer who would had shot if left that open.

If Ringwood think they were entitled to play in the GF then what's the point of playing a finals series.

Some teams simply match up better on "better" teams than others.

It happens, entitlement comes from arrogance.

There might be a good lesson for everyone in this.

Finals Series - Agreed to by vote by the PARTICIPANTS delegates at the AGM , if you send a nuff nuff DUD, who lacks the ability to comprehend such issues or fails to mount an argument against them at the AGM, as your club delegate, more the fool you as a Club Executive.
