Lightning signs import Mikaela Ruef

THE addition of US "big" Mikaela Ruef means Adelaide Lightning have now secured 40 per cent of the starting line-up of last season's WNBL third placegetter.

Ruef at centre and Leilani Mitchell at point guard largely were responsible for much of Sydney’s success in reaching the preliminary final but now will head up the Lightning’s “rebuild” under rookie but well-established head coach Tracy York.

I can imagine some people might grind teeth at the idea of a team signing imports first over local talent, but after Adelaide's shaky, early off-season, I think a promising foundation is more likely to help attract further talent.

Yeah, I think it is important to secure the star talent to build around, and that will help build hopefully a positive winning culture and also help gain the top local talent that may look elsewhere

Very good transaction. A tried and true performer and worth every dollar. Will get you a score when you need one. I'm a big fan of Rueffy.

And what is the point of having a team for the SA players who don't want to play here?

When the only one's who do aren't good enough for WNBL!
