U19 gems worlds in 2 weeks.

Thoughts on the squad?
Our group opponents...
And who might medal in the tournament.

5'11 Wallace/5'6 Pirini
5'9 tupaea/5'10 Seaton/6'0 sharp
6'0 maley/6'0 horvat
6'3 froling/6'3 smith/6'2 Dennis
6'5 scherf/6'4 magbegor

Playing Brazil, Korea and Serbia in the group stage.
Finishing top of our group means that we will likely play Spain in the 1/4s and the usa in the semis.

Might meet Usa in the final. The semis we could face Canada, France, Russia or the Dutch if we can somehow beat Spain.

Big ask to get past Spain with that line up but hopefully Spain has a bad game and our Aussie gems are firing ( as they can at times)but they will get knocked out by USA for sure if they meet in semis their line up is way to good for ours this time

Yeah, for Spain... salvadores, Quevedo, carzorla, Flores, lopez etc etc

Usa- Dangerfield, Samuelson, collier, cox, anigwe etc etc. huge team...
Starting 5 might have 4 girls above 6'3.

Russia's another big team and has performed quite well of late.

Wallace, tupaea, horvat/sharp, maley, froling as starting 5.

We will Medal, have most positions covered I think

Wallace
Tupea
Sharp
Froling
Smith / Sherf

With a deep bench, the ability to press , trap, zone and run the ball. Inside presence with Magbegor as well, very tough match up for most teams

No way sharp starts over maley.
Pirini will be a problem. Ok at running the show but not a great defender or scorer.
Probably won't be on the floor unless she has Wallace, Seaton or tupaea by her side.

Sharp / Maley / Horvat

Can't go wrong, They are all good don't you think ? We will see who the staff starts but it will be a very good team. Let's see how they go and support them ALL

Maley is the defender, rebounder and has more hustle than the other 2.
Sharp is the shooter. Solid but not special in a particular area.
Horvat is the penetrater, get to the basket type. A mix of both sharp/maley.

Australia lose to usa 85-82 in u19 warmup.

Wallace with 23 pts and froling with 20. Maley leading rebounder with 9.
Scherf will probably joining squad shortly.

usa"s best player Katie Lou Samuelson will not be competing in world champs.
Aja Wilson leading scorer and rebounder with 30 and 11.

Seaton injured or something?

Agree?
Wallace, tupaea, maley, froling, scherf as starting lineup.
Followed by..
Pirini, Seaton, horvat or sharp, smith, magbegor.
Dennis when required.

This 2 pf, swapped out for 2 c's is not working.
Seaton needs to be used 15 mins or more at sg. Much better, ball handler and shooter than sharp or horvat.

Well they finally started to handle Brazil's pressure near the end of the game but,

They were being out hustled and muscled by Brazil (they really went in to the game hard to unsettle Australia and it worked but they should have been called for more fouls) and there is a real lack of composure needed to execute the final play that highlights the CoE girls are not getting enough games (to learn how to handle pressure and adapt) in the development process as the talent is there in this team.

This was also evident with the mens U19. TIme for BA to review & refocus the develop process (as well as get more money) towards more games and exposure to a higher level of competition as well as a greater diversity of playing styles.

Its so very interesting now that you can see all the games at all the FIBA WC's

Absolutely no energy or organisation on the court, no defence and no team chemistry happening. Why is Sherf NOT starting, seaton would not have handled the pressure Brazil was putting on ball handlers, wallace does not look comfortable running the point.
Just really poor standard they all look flat footed, with the exception of Smith and Maley

wallace looks real tired. So many uncharacteristic mistakes...
Very long season for her.

No doubt scherf should start. Not just her height, but her size/strength is needed.
Sharp imo has been terrible apart from a few good rebounds and her ft shooting.
Start maley at sf followed closely by horvat and insert Seaton as 2nd sg behind tupaea.

I don't think Dennis was required and would have had another guard/shooter who can defend like antoniadou or woods or at least another strong big like milisic or fareo, hellessey maybe.

Tupaea 25 / Seaton 10 / sharp 5
Maley 20 / horvat 10 / sharp 5
Froling 20 / smith 20 / magbegor/Dennis if required.
Scherf 20 / magbegor 10 / smith/froling 10

Wallace cannot carry the load, and agree they needed another good defensive /shooting/ball handling guard, in that mix, Antoniadou would have been a handy addition.Skinner wasn't even suited up only had 11 tonight so maybe she's sick.
This is only the second game and they are looking spent already, games are only going to get harder, though Korea should be an easy one for them.
Let's hope they find thei mojo sooner rather than later, they need a motivator out their someone who can Bri g some much needed energy to that team

The Brazilians applied loads of pressure on Wallace bringing the ball up the court on all occasions. The Aussies could have another small guards on court and moved Wallace into the two spot to switch things up.

Wallace became frustrated as the game progressed and her decsion making suffered, she is very good whe she is on but did not play well yesterday.

I thought Tupea and Maley were the saviours against Brazil. Tupea controlled the floor and took the right shots at the right times. Maley's rebounding has successfully transferred to the world stage, hopefully her offense follows...

Smith was clutch down the stretch.

I think the referring was appalling.

Loving watching online.

Although smith has been the better pf.

Froling works better with scherf. Scherf can seal/box out players and froling can get it to her through high/low.

If smith gets it. She almost always heads to the basket. Magbegor is a great follow up with great rebounding and shot blocking ability. Moves her feet real well too. Needs to be used a lot more.

We are getting a little extra from maley than we are sharp. horvat, I would like to See more of along with Seaton.

Tupaea is doing quite well.

Against Brazil, Wallace aprt from a few good moments, Passing and shooting. She has been pretty poor. Ball handling has been loose, decision making not great, not her normal self on defence either. Looks frustrated.

funny how we all see different things, I didn't think Tupaea made good shot choices at all, or controlled the game well, but then don't think any of them did, so maybe she was the better out of those guards. Wallace has not been running as PG or even SG at Baylor, they have used her mainly for defensive pressure but with plenty around her to help, which she's not getting here, and to sit on the wing and wait for a pass (which isn't usually forth coming)in the few games I watched. She has way more to her game than that. She looks very flat, probably overloaded, and playing against tougher opposition she needs help which is just not there in this group.
Hopefully the girls can rest up a bit and get the wins for the next two games, but then it is just going to get harder and tougher the further they advance.

I would have added antoniadou and skinner and taken out Dennis and 1 of sharp/horvat.

maley would be great at netball to I reckon.
Goal defence maybe.

Surprised netball Australia hasn't tried to pinch her.
She has that type of game.

Needs to improve her dribbling, her defense and her poise around the basket.
Misses a lot of simple put back layups after she rebounds the ball on the offensive end.

Tupea appears to still be a "pass only if no other choice" player, with poor D - just like u17s sadly. In fact she would rather travel, or take a a very bad shot attempt than make a good assist.

Wallace looks like a player who has a few moments where you say "see she can play, the selectors are right". The rest of the games you have your head in your hands.

Wouldn't be taking smith out of starting 5 , I'd rather see froling coming off the bench , smith is way more mobile and consistent her only issue is she's not much into passing lol
