thread to talk about the champs starting this Saturday in Ulverstone, Tasmania
So not long now who's looking good on the boys side of things

I know this......There will be lots of 13-15 year olds having the time of their lives and lots of volunteer coaches and managers doing their best to help them achieve. Along with lots of parents cheering and volunteers stressing about doing a good job. If you want to troll to see if someone thinks your son will bring home a medal or be noticed by an NBA scout......can't help you.
@Wonderer, while you are correct about some trolls on here, the OP has actually just opened up a thread for discussion, no mention of medals or who will win or anything else you may be upset over previous posts!

Sorry agreed, I just feel past performance suggests this will quickly descend into which 13 year old is likely to play for Austaralia or which is performing below expectations! Just let em play, report results and be pleased for all of them.
Yup, that would be a nice way to go, agree! Livestats tell one story, hope the Pick 'n Roll have someone there and they report on what is happening, not just the stats because we can all count them? LC, is there anyone there in Tassie this week so we don't just read top scorers like we did at 18's?
I don't think they had anyone at the 18's what they report isn't always the facts very frustrating if your not their to watch
Stats don't show a true representation of a game remember it's a team game not just about personal stats
Yes I agree about stats.
After U18 Nationals I was amused at reading of a player who made the U17 Australian squad ( still in it ). His tournament stats were quoted that simply were incorrect.
Who are you talking about there were only 9 players at Nationals who made the squad
Television hasn't reached North Western Tasmania yet.
What are the gudielines for a 'proven' coach? Someone's opinion? Trophy Cabinet? Sit the 'proven coach'test?
Just checked the stats from a game I just watched, wow they are all completely wrong.
Broken shot clock causing chaos on Court 3 - not good.
I think you have to remember the people taking down those stats are all volunteers
Opening game nerves by NSW Metro boys?? Just get NT by 3 with 26 turnovers
Wow that's close how do the NSW Metro compare to NSW Country the old nerves lucky to scrape through
NSW C just get over the line against VIC C Men, close games in round one so far.
NSW Met just not that good and didn't give NT enough credit. But not a medal threat at all
Favourites in the girls all won, Vic Country VERY lucky to get the W over ACT.

Looks like the ACT girls team is pretty good this year.

We don't have anyone down in Tassie at the moment.
We are hoping we may be able to provide some coverage by the time finals come around.
Yes not relying on stats and pick and roll not the most reliable if your not there
Looking at the results it looks like a fairly even group of teams on the boys side of things

Saw two games yesterday.
NSW Country vs Tas boys. Point guard for NSW goes alright. Good basketball IQ. Attacks the basket but just as easily finds the bigs inside. Team got a little complacent late in the game and should have won by much bigger margin.
Vi Metro vs Tas girls. Vic girls slow starters and bigs fumbly early. Started to pull away in the 3rd and look like they were set for a big win. But only won by 15? Not sure they gonna be good enough to win it this year either.
What has happened to NSW Metro Girls , been very strong for a few years now. This group beaten by Nth QLD and walloped by VICC ?
Sam froling and dalton gonna be a lock for that u17 squad.
Fakira and runnalls haven't seen much from.
Simons, Dangelo, goodchild, heal making cases early on for u17s.
Isabelle Bourne, callies sister also looking good. Better than Rees atm.
Schweizer from act performing well too.
U18 rule folks, and I think you will find if you're not going to the Sapphires camp, you probably won't make the team.
SA Metro boys struggling. 0-3 and next game against Tasmania which will be tough also.
Stats are terrible people so don't assess any player by them.
1-3 and to be fair results to date weren't a surprise.
hmmm
Years ago
For what it's worth the SA Metro boys are 1 and 3 as they had two games on Saturday.
Also agree with #935, stats don't tell the full story, especially at the defensive end.
Just remember that they are 14-15 year old kids and lots of factors contribute to how the stats read.
They should all be supported and congratulated for their efforts.
SAC boys doing OK so far although one player in particular is taking a LOT of shots and not many are going in.
10/50 from the field in his last two games.
946, what are you on about? The player is 10/50 in his last two games. That's a fact.
What's that got to do with being a statistician? Is adding the results from two games too hard for you?
Hang in there tiger, just two weeks of school holidays and then get back to primary school!
Why is allowed to take so many shots then watched a little today others not making the most of the opportunity
NSW Country boys looking good for a 3peat. Mark Watkins program is working wonders in NSW

Agree with above post. What Watkins, with the help of Gruggan, are doing with NSW is tremendous. There emerging teams coming up are extremely good as well.
Just a shame now with Gruggan gone to Townsville as AC I hear Watkins is about to leave also.
Vic Metro teams both undefeated at this stage, less talent than last year but seem to be playing for coaches
Will this continue? Or do you see changes?
Watkins u17 boys 2nd wc 2014 (2016?)
Caporn u19 boys 7th wc 2015
Seebohm u17 girls ? Wc 2016 (Lucas out-5th wc 2014)
Goriss u19 girls ? Wc 2015
Lemanis boomers 12th wc 2014
Joyce opals 3rd wc 2014
If Watkins is working such wonders in NSW, why are the metro teams so ordinary?

Re 536114: Whoever wrote the above is either a) Sam Gruggen or b) someone who has never watched the Country and Metro team play. Entirely different offensive style and philosophy and some similarities on d, but not following same system on the whole.
Mark and Sam have done a great job with NITP kids, but there are other factors behind the Country success, particularly in the boys. Girls still a way off, but the next few years will be interesting. As for the Metro teams, results this year reflect lack of depth, which is a worry in the biggest city in the country.
Could anyone list the top 8 teams going into the finals
Top 8 teams aren't decided until tonight. It is all available online.

Agree about Watkins and Gruggen and the work with NITP Players.
Rex Nottage needs most of the credit for the Country program when they run their CPL Camps and Paul Masters also has a lot of involvement in that program as well.
This years 16's groups apart from the Country Boys are certainly struggling and not even having the U/18 Country Boys Gold medal coach involved with the Country Girls is helping.
This conversation is always very unfair. People forget to take into account the reality of talent available. Some groups have a lot more talent then others.
Some have better, stronger teams from other states one year, weaker groups the next.
The best coaches are those that get the talent they have to overachieve. Sometimes that means winning gold but that can also mean coming 9th.
Agree re: best coaches get overachievement, but can 9th be an overachievement for NSW Metro? Not that the boys are guaranteed to even get that high. Both Penrith and Hornsby were top-12 teams at u14 nationals 2 years ago, and Penrith and Norths both performed well at Classic this year. There's not much in previous results to suggest that they should be as far off the pace as they have been.
two of SA Metros starters didn't play in Classics teams. Classics do not represent the best in the country, it represents the best teams in the states that participate and apply to classics.
Any one game to pic the medal contenders for nationals yet

How is the Radford Tassie style of basketball shaping up? Maybe needs to spend less time focussing on the 3 ball and more on the team approach.

Maybe having the right coaches for the jobs might be a good start.
By having that they get the players motivated to play their roles.
Coaching at State level is different to coaching rep level in whatever competition you are from and as we know some comps are not that strong.

What's happening with sporting pulse no updates no info up on the finals BA very little info on game reports nothing on pick and roll what's going on
any players that deserve a call up to u17 camps?
Men?
Women ? Avg.
I.bourne pf/c 15pts, 10rbds, 3.5 blks.
R.scweizer sg/sf 15pts, 9rbds, 3.5asts.
H.andrews pg 15pts, 7rbds, 3.5asts.
Players that have performed well, that are currently in camp?
Boys- Froling, dalton, dent
Girls- Simons, dangelo, Shelley, goodchild, heal
yeah nah, only Simons is going to the camp from that group of girls.
Scoring in a game against NT doesn't hold a lot of water when picking a Aus team.
To say Rex and Paul masters have anything to do with the success of the country boys is terrible. For those who don't know the CDP is for athletes who will very likely never make a state team. The kids in NSW that benefit and have the success are from Watkins program however yes, the coaches from the country (Hargreaves and Scoines) have done a tremendous job and the country kids just play harder than metro.

407, how is that relevant?
It's so ridiculous that so many on this forum think nobody can have an opinion unless they've achieved something themselves.
I'm pretty sure you have never run the country but I bet you have an opinion on the prime minister.
Preach ^
Admittedly maybe not so acceptable to be judging those at the age group were talking about but the amount of people screaming tall poppy syndrome at those saying Delly is very average is astonishing
BA video - showing all the players on each of the U16 teams
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMXkx0xoOig
add Austin Bradtke to U17 maybe Kyle Bowen
I don't understand why people are on here talking about u17. It is done.
Have a shot from the cheap seats by all means if your opinion can be substantiated. Based on exactly what is my question. Pretty hard to criticise anything or anyone in this topic especially when hardly anyone here is actually there to comment on what they have witnessed.
It appears to me to be too many people hating on the kids and their coaches. Not called for at all.
Girls semis could go either way. All good teams so will be tight you would expect.
Win or lose, let's just hope Cesari shakes hands with the SA coach and conducts himself professionally after the game, instead of throwing his toys out of the pram like he did last year in the corresponding match.
MELHOOPS - not this year. QLD South through in the first semi. And a nice rematch from last year in the other. Should be a great game between SA Metro and VIC Metro.
If the final roster is done for u17s...
Who are the final 12 players chosen for both boys and girls?

MELHOOPS might not be completely wrong, It could be an all VIC Bronze Medal game if SAM gets up :)

Unfortunately NSW Country boys lost semi so no three peat for them.
Wish them well in the Bronze play off game.
Remainder of NSW teams playing off way down the list which you would think BNSW would see as disappointing results.
Qld having a great tournament . would be great to see 1-2 finish in boys.
After reading article about Tas, seems like they are back to the old days of 9,10,11,12 a great job for a small state
Scorers have it wrong, Vic Metro girls should have just won by 2 instead of OT
Are you saying the result is incorrect or is it correct & final that the Vic Metro team lost by 2 ?
I just got a text saying SAM won the game....
Hugh J.
Years ago
i watched it on play by play and it went to overtime and vicm fouled with 10 sec to go and SA made both shots - so it looks like SAM won????
Wow, sounds like a great game. Good on the SA coach & kids, bad luck to the Vics ( seriously ). Hope they can get up for the bronze, and the Championship decider should be very good.

Anon 500, what are you on about?
Are you suggesting the score was wrong at the end of regulation and VICM should have been declared winners?
Yeah sure, that actually happened. Of course it did.
That is a ridiculous claim to make.

Yeah agree cant work out that suggestion? I'm a Vic and a former Vic Metro player and I now coach. I am a firm believer in good sportsmanship and to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Well done to the SAM girls and good luck in the G/Final. I have never seen Simmons play but people have told me she is really good - look forward to seeing her in an Aussie team soon.
Simons from sa
Simmons from nsw and Bae
Both will play for Australia.
Did anybody who was there see VicC girls vs SAM ? Based on Livestats VicC who will now play for bronze must have shot lights out and won comfortably. 2 x Aus U17 squad members on both sides, would have been a high standard I am guessing

Only 1 girl from vic metro as current u17 member. Cochrane.
Sa metro had Simons and Rees.
Oh wait... You mean vic country.
Yeah... Dangelo and Shelley are u17 members.

SAM drew a charge with 0:05 to play then went the length of the court and hit a long two on the siren. Now have a chance for back to back gold medals. Good luck girls.
Dam...
Qld South men poor shooting...
Thought it was going to be an all qld final.
Stoddart has been pretty solid this week along with dalton.
?? to the above poster
5 seconds is plenty of time to make it from one end to a long 2 position at the other end.
Are you trying to be funny?
Figured she would be facing some defensive pressure and have to evade some players so hence the need to be quite quick
No you didn't really did you. You thought 0.05 was half a second ;)
Noticed some AFL scouts watching boys games this week.
Come on vic metro girls. Win the bronze for jai.
Haha.
Yes let's hope Jai gets that bronze in what will surely be his last Nationals.

Rees has so much size but doesn't use it to her advantage. No post skills.
I think pizzey will be the backup centre for Magbegor for the u17 squad.
What a game!
Heal with the clutch free throws.
Brett for sa almost hit the game winner?
Quality of stream not great. Should get crew who do Boguts Showcase
Why didn't they wait till after u16 asc to pick potential u17 squads?
Seems pretty silly.
Hopefully they get a late call up.

Well another nationals over and nsw would not be happy with result apart from country boys effort.
No bonus $$ for powers to be this championship.
Will the coaches return apart from possibly Scoines.
What will the talks be about for next year?
True
Years ago
Cesari's not a bad coach but he got caught up in big names which left him short on depth.
It came back to bite him when it counted
Seebohm needs to put I.bourne and R.Schweizer in camp.
A lot of the players in this tournament were better than the ones at u18s.
Some absolute rubbish being posted here, none better than the last two.
Nice article on,
Mark Bradtke and Andrew Vlahov, with their sons Austin Bradtke and Ethan Vlahov at the Australian Under-16 Basketball Championships
http://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/3193580/sons-of-guns-show-sport-has-great-future/
Austin looks to be about 202-3cm, I think he is 2000 born?
Under 16 girls VicM what a joke. To many good players missed for the famous fathers club.
Any announcements where nationals will be held next year
