James tells Cav he will opt out of his contract

Just like Kevin Love, LeBron James is opting out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers and will become a free agent on July 1st. James had a player option worth $21.5 million for next season, but according to Cleveland.com, James notified the Cavaliers Sunday that he is declining the option.
Cavaliers fans shouldn't start burning James gear (for a second time) yet, though, as LeBron is expected to sign a similar one-year contract with the Cavaliers with a player option for a second year. By doing so, James will receive a slight raise to around $22 million and allow himself to opt out again next summer when the NBA’s salary cap will rise significantly (allowing James to then sign a long-term deal if he chooses for much more).
James opting out also puts pressure on the Cavaliers to take care of business with other free agents (Love, J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Tristan Thompson, a player James said should be a "Cavalier for his whole career“). If the team completely bombs the offseason and everyone leaves, James could then decide to play elsewhere — but there’s no reason to suspect that will happen. By opting out, LeBron isn’t (really) hurting the Cavaliers or abandoning his team, he’s simply making a smart business decision.
