Weigh signs for 3 years with Taipans

Forward Stephen Weigh has signed a three-year deal to stay with the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans until 2018.

Weigh joined the Taipans in 2013 and started every game in the Taipans' record-breaking 2014-15 season.

He averaged 8.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 21 minutes per game, sharing court time with livewire import Torrey Craig.

Head coach Aaron Fearne said this selflessness was a key part of his team’s culture and resulting success last season.

"Stevie had an outstanding season last year. He had some great moments and his professionalism in buying into the team culture was sensational," Fearne said.

“He shared that three spot with Torrey Craig and together they were outstanding, which showed great self-sacrifice,” he said.

“He wasn’t the only one who had to do it, but the best teams over past five years have shown that’s what you have to do to succeed.”

It was Weigh’s 16 points and go-ahead three-pointer that sparked the Taipans’ surge home in their game two semi-final win over the Perth Wildcats last season.

Fearne will draw upon this experience and Weigh’s poise under pressure as his side looks to continue its momentum into 2015-16.

“You need experience and guys who’ve played in big games. Stevie has already won a championship and played in another grand finals series last season.”

“He showed great poise in the big games for us, and we look forward to drawing on this for the next three seasons,” Fearne said.

Thats a long contract for a player of Weighs age and ability. It shows Cairns value stability which is good to see.

Still looking for Steve to have a real break out season with his 3 point shooting, a season where he is a dominant scorer - to fullfil the potential everyone says he has.

he looks at his best when he contributes all over the court.....he can't just rely on his 3 shot.

That's great ... no chance of him playing for the 6ers then. Bullet dodged!

I agree with skull. Fearne's offence is about being selfless & team oriented, he can't just come out & jack 3's.
Good signing by Cairns as he was a rock for us last season!

Stevie showed some really good signs last year, but he will never be a dominant offensive player

He can get hot but really hes a complimentary player

Thank christ for that, was worried the 6ers were going to make him a 'power centre'.

From what I heard him and Scott Callaghan (Taipans fitness coach) both played a big part in building the team culture and getting everybody fit last year. Weigh trains meticulously, works about 20% harder than anyone else on the team and is the kind of guy you can show the imports and the younger players and say 'this is what you have to do everyday'. Watch him when the Taipans are warming up on court before the game: he's already in the zone and totally focussed; Wilbekin and Craig were going through the motions most of the time.

He's not going to set the NBL on fire but if he's not on crazy money, is always fit, continues to play selflessly and especially if he can push his 8 or 9 ppg up into double digits he would seem like a reasonable move by Fearney. I mean, who else are you going to get in? Lucas Walker? :-)

Weigh is a very solid player, just not the franchise star that Marty Clarke tried to push him as in his time at the 36ers.

I dont see anything wrong with locking Weigh up for 3 years on a solid contract, well done to Weigh and the Taipans.
