WNBL awards lunch and announcements

Townsville Bulletin wins best WNBL coverage
Roy Ward won best Feature of the Year
Jon Tuxworth won Writer of the Year

Jason Kelly is WNBL Ref of the Year

Abby Bishop wins top scorer and top rebounder
Leilani Mitchell wins most assists

Kelsey Griffin wins Defensive Player of the Year
Lauren Scherf is Rookie of the Year
Shannon Seebohm is Coach of the Year

All Star Five:
Abby Bishop (Caps)
Cayla Francis (Fire)
Penny Taylor (Rangers)
Tess Madgen (Boomers)
Kelsey Griffin (Spirit)

MVP is Abby Bishop.

Is it just me or is there some very good SA representation on that list? Bishop, Seebohm, Francis and Madgen?

I was reading the list an noted your comment (Isaac) re the number of SA reps. Why/how were they all let go.

proud they are sth aussie - but if they can make a career elsewhere - half their luck - go to where they want - it is a free world.

could easily add Laura Hodges to the list but not this season. Another SA girl.

All decent girls have historically gone to the AIS quite young (including - Bishop, Francis and Madgen).

Once they are used to living away from home, heading back to their home state isn't always the biggest factor in deciding where to play.

You can't really say these girls were let go as most states would have good players in the same category.

It would almost be worth having a coach involved with the SA under 16 or 18 state teams involved with the lightning so there is some sort of connection for the girls with the WNBL team.

Thrilled for Tess's win. Now hopefully Joyce puts her back in the Opals squad. She carried Melbourne most of the year

Why was it a lunch and not a dinner like previous seasons?

Oh wait when it was a dinner WNBL were subsidised by the $100k per NBL club levy. that must of been nice.

on another note at least a lunch was organised unlike the new NBL...lol

Congratulations to all, and especially happy to see Shannon get the coach of the year. Well deserved!

how many years are they allowed to be in WNBL before they are no longer classed as Rookies

if tess does well with her wnba camp and gets a roster spot - she would have to be in the box seat for opals.

Think you will find there is a good level of communication between lightning and upcoming u16/18 junior talent.

which reminds me.... recall the "lightning squad" for rising stars - now that was a great idea but seemed to not progress...

Very important for WNBL clubs to develop links to emerging talents regardless of who they are.

Boomers are doing it well on a very tight budget, also cutting the Bulleen cord a little more at last which will help them securing VIC juniors.

Cappie is an amazing shooter and re quick release is lightening fast but she plays zero defence. Tess plays both ends of the floor consistently well

Congrats to all the award winners!

As a side note, I too wondered what the eligibility for Rookie of the Year was. Scherf played 15 games last season, which seems like a lot to still be classed as a rookie.

Also, I really wish the WNBL would introduce Most Improved and Best Sixth Player Awards!

Griffin naturalising is bad news for Jarry. Similar sorts of front court hustle players but Kelsey is less of a liability on offence.

Don't feel bad, anyone who follows Joyce in Twitter knows how hard he finds it to spell his own players' names.

It's no big secret that Griffin wants to get citizenship. There's even been reports about it in the media: http://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/story/2268464/griffin-has-high-hopes-as-wnba-season-looms/

IIRC she has her permanent residency now, so she's one step closer.

Not sure how the process works, or if you have had to have permanent residency for a set period of time before you can apply for citizenship.
