Two seasons in 1 calendar year

Any news on BASA's attemp to get this up and running. Sounds like a great idea to me. It might stop 8 year olds being forced to play in under 12's.

BabaLouie means if your birthday is late in the year it means you'll be younger than everyone.

For instance an 8 year old turning 9 in December. Summer season starts Augustish... Player has to move up to U12s because they'll turn 10 before Jan 1 of the following year. Therefore player will be 8 for half the summer season.

so 12 weeks makes a big difference to these kids.
I think not. I think it is the parents who cant cope with this.
Summer is a grading season so when do you have the grading season for the new age group.
At the beginning of the year, your new age group is not up to scratch for club championships, nationals etc.Winter season finishes later which runs into players beening unavailable for all sorts of reasons. Older kids have exams, state committments, sasi committments oversea trips etc.
So do we now separate the under 10's, U12's from the older age groups.
While the sound of having 2 seasons in one calender year for juniors sounds like a good idea it thwarped with lots of unknown problems that the average joe does not consider.
Does the whole sructure of junior basketball have to be change because a few parents cant cope with little johnny and jenny playing 12 weeks when still considered eligible for the lower age group.
They arent orphans and all club are effected the same way so there is not advantage to change it purely for this reason, as they are still playing against kids their own ages!

This is bullshit.

Whenever your birthday is, you will never play kids who are more than 1 (if you are in your top age) or 2 (if you are in your bottom age) years older than you if you have a December birthday.

Why is this so tough to understand? Who cares if an 8 year old with a December birthday has to play Under 12's. The oldest kids that s/he will play will be kids that have turned 10 that year. He or she will not be playing 11 year olds.

This is just another example of BASA and/or the weaker clubs trying to be seen to do something rather than tackle the big issues (ie standard of the competition).

THE REASON THIS IS THE WAY IT IS, IS SO THAT CLUBS DO NOT HAVE TO GET THEIR SELECTIONS DONE WHEN EVERBODY IS AWAY ON SUMMER HOLIDAYS. IT WAS A SHAMBLES WHEN IT WAS LIKE THIS 10-15 YEARS AGO.

Come on BASA solve the real problems.

Well BaBaLouie,

During the mid 80's for 5 years we had it so that clubs had to organise team selections and squads as well as nominate in January. This meant that there were more forfiets and teams being pulled from competitions than we have now.

And what it will mean is that the exact same kids will be playing the exact same kids in the exact same competitions. So the 8 years old playing in U/12's will be playing the exact same kids anyway, only it will be 1 school term later. So they mioght have aged 1 term, but so will the kids that they are playing.

All competitoins over the world play over the Christmas break with the same FIBA age groups. Why fix something that has already been fixed.

Food for thought in there. Why cant they just have rolling teams? For example, if you are in under 12's you play until the day before your 12th birthday, then go up to under 14's. Surely this would lead to team stability and a age division coach could stay with that group, bringing in a new kid (or kids)every month or so and losing a kid (or kids)every month or so. I've rummaged through the FIBA rules and regulations and cant find any reference to this issue, could someone point me to the right paragraph and section?

You can't be serious Baba? This leads to team stability??

What about the kid who's birthday is the day before the grand final? too bad. Not to mention all the other kids who have gone up halfway through the season and miss finals.

To Anonymous. Do You have stats to support your statement that there were more forfeits and team withdrawals in the 80's than now?

I played in the eighties and coached for the last 5 years. The program was alot smoother 20 years ago. The big problem now is that we 5 Divisions when once it was 3.
