15/16 Adelaide 36ers Thread

Sixers fans, what is your ideal roster next season? Joey has told us he is looking to retain most of the team and looking to add a 3/4, Donta Smith type, do-it-all player and is also speaking with Brad Newley. Also i'm hearing rumours of Jamarvelous becoming a citizen. The future is looking bright in SA.

Mine would be:

Johnson / Schenscer
Motum / Petrie
Import / Creek
Newley / Johns
Wilson / Greenwood

If my points predictions are correct that puts us spot on 70.

I think we need to be realistic and say that Peter Crawford has played his last game as a Sixer. Tom Daly is a good 10th man and has done what was asked of him, but he would be the first to be put on the alter to make way for someone.

I would expect Schensch to be re-signed, but his salary would be reduced. He is 32 and quite handy off the bench so unless his agent stuffs up negotiations, he'll be coming off the bench.

Petrie won't be going anywhere.

Johnson and Motum are high priority targets so they will be back.

Creek is the longest standing Sixer and only a coach who hates fans would move him on.

Wilson is likely to be the MVP so you would get him back if you were smart (unless he was a real pain behind the scenes, which I don't believe he is)

That leaves BJ, Teys and Gibson.

BJ could be held on an injury waiver, but he is more than likely gone.

Teys showed a lot of promise last season and lifted when required. This season he slipped a bit and that might be as a result of circumstances beyond his control. He has done nothing wrong and is a good team member. Maybe he is a bit of trade bait. He might slip into a role in Sydney behind Madgen. If the Sixers are looking for room in the roster, he might be one who is the unfortunate one.

Gibbo, Gibbo, Gibbo. What are we to do with you? There's been a lot said about him on this forum and whether he is over-rated or not got his head in the game at times. Also whether or not him and Wilson are too similar or clash. He is the only NBL player in the Boomers and that should mean something and he is the current Captain. Him and Joey seem pretty tight and it's rare to move your Captain on. I think there are a lot of piece of the jigsaw puzzle to consider. I would expect him to return, but depends if Joey and the Board want the Sixers to head down a particular path that is at odds with Gibbo.

The big thing I want from the Sixers is a decent 3 point shooter. The Sixers have been woeful at this for a while. Every other team has a decent 3 point shooter they can go to when they are two points down and need a 3 to win and you think "yep, don't let him get it" Abba, Wortho, Madge, Oscar the Grouch, Beal, Gliddon.

Overall, I wouldn't expect too many changes

Motum finished well above all but one of those 3 point specialists on your list Jack.

Really, I'm hearing he's going to end up back in Finland, where his wife is from. Something about him possibly being able to qualify to play with the Finnish national team.
That said, it sounds like the Sixers would really like him back, but don't know that they expect it to happen.

Anyone know when the points come out?
Also, how long was Tey's contract? If he goes from 1 to 5 (or higher) could make it difficult... Adleaide have assembled a strong squad so it will be interesting to see where the points finish up.

How often (if at all) did Joey start Johnson and Motum, and how many minutes did they play together.
If you start both, with Shensy and Petire off the bench, that gives you a formidable front court, but does Joey like to play that big? Also not forgetting that you could potentially chase another import. If you land another forward, he may choose to stay with starting Motum at centre and bringing Johnson off the bench, and I guess Shens would make way.

I have heard nothing about Wilson, but his twitter account describes himself as "Finland through and through."
If his wife and daughter are Finnish, then surely playing there or elsewhere in Europe would be hugely attractive.

Yeah, forgot about Brock, but I was thinking of more of a 1/2/3 player

I doubt Gibbo goes anywhere and Motum and Creek are contracted.

We also know they are after 2 imports - 1 being an alpha male. No alpha male will come off the bench.

I think realistically we would be looking at a team like so;

C - DJ/Schenscher
PF - Motum/Petrie
SF - Alpha Import/Creek
SG - Gibbo/Teys
PG - Import/Daly
DP - Johns

The only other way that team goes is if they decide against Wilson and choose to run Gibbo at the point in favour of an import SG - that team would look like this;

C - DJ/Schenscher
PF - Motum/Petrie
SF - Alpha Import/Creek
SG - Import/Teys
PG - Gibson/Daly
DP - Johns

So Creek goes from a starter/big minute player to a bit player <15mpg behind an "alpha" import?

fstos, I dont see it working any other way if they are after 2 imports?

Personally, I would be starting Creek and going after Forman to round out the front line and then spend big on a gun PG/SG import.

Other option could be to have Creek still play 25+ minutes backing up both the SG & SF spots off the bench?

C - DJ/Schenscher
PF - Motum/Petrie
SF - Import/Creek
SG - Gibbo/Creek
PG - Import/Teys/Daly

I think we would need to lose atleast 1 of Gibson, Petrie, Schenscher to run with 2 imports given the points and salary caps, im pretty sure we were on 70 at the end of the season, so cutting Crawford and or Teys for a import wont fit in the points cap i dont think, they combined for 5 or 6 points last season im pretty sure.

Id offer Gibson $110k, Petrie $100k, Schenscher $80k, and the first 2 who accept get the spots and the 3rd misses out, given it looks like Hawks and Crocs guys would be gettable you could also offer guys like Davidson, Forman, Blanchfield, Coenraad, R Martin, Norton, Maqrkovic a spot if more than 1 of these guys reject these offers and leave the club. (Daniel Dillon is 1 id also look into for the $80-100k range)

Bringing a import in gives us flexibility to make it work no matter which 2 of those 3 stay,

Id let Crawford go,

Offer Teys a contract for around $65k

Keep the rest.

Lets say we keep gibson and 1 of the bigs id go with

C Johnson/Petrie or Schenscher
PF Motum/Creek (still gets 25 mins off the bench in sg,sf,pf spots)
SF Donta Smith type import/Teys or rookie
SG Gibson/Johns
PG Wilson/Daly

IF Gibson leaves and we keep both the big guys, we would look like

C Johnson/Schenscher
PF Motum/Petrie
SF/SG Donta Smith import/Teys
SG/SF Creek/Johns
PG Wilson/Daly

Either way looks good to me and either should fit within the salary and points cap.

I have left Newley out but if he were to come in it would be at the expense of Gibson in the first line up, and Schenscher or Petrie in the 2nd line up, i just rekcon he will get offered way more than we can afford to stay in Europe, but would love to have him if he did chose to come back to Aus.

Can we put some $'s next to these guys.

Motum $200k
Johnson $150k +
Gibbo $150k + (low end)
Creek $100k +
Schensher $100k
Petrie $100k +
Wilson $130k
Import $100k
Teyes $80k
Daly $35k

Think we are over the cap here...

If they are going to keep Gibson then just make him the PG. He did not have SG attitude for the majority of last season.
So I think you are wasting his skills playing him at SG.

I think Daly has had his chances and never proven he can be more then a back-up hird string PG.
So grab some good players coming back from US college and see what they can do.

Gibson College player
Import Teys or College Player
Creek Import SFSG
Motum Petrie
DJ Luke

The salary cap and points caps are why i have Daly, Johns and maybe even a rookie replacing Teys in my line ups, as these guys should be able to be signed on minimum.

I reckon the line ups i have suggested would fit under the caps, or very close to.

Phil...why waste 10 points and an import spot on a back up SF role for 3 point shooting when you can potentially get the proven and hometown boy Oscar for less points?

Also, a back court of Gibbo & Newley gets owned by guys like Ced Jackson as neither are great ball handlers.

Fair enough to run Gibbo at the point but bring in a SG with good handles.

For me, Newley is a better yet more expensive version of Creek - is he worth it and do we need 2 of the same player? I think Newley is a bit of a pipe dream at this point anyway.

Aussiebballer...I like your option of replacing Daly with a returning college player. College player would cost around the same as Daly on both points and salary but would likely have more upside. Only issue is, I believe Daly is well liked and a good team man both on and off the court - sometimes that is more valuable.

C - DJ/Schench
PF - Motum/Peach
SF - Import/Creek
SG - Import/Creek
PG - Gibbo/Teys/College Player
DP - Johns

I think the first thing we need to do is make sure we keep the front court of DJ, Motum, Schenscher and Peach.....if we can that is.

We need a 3 point specialist import SG with a good defensive game, or Brad Newley. I'd have Teys as the backup. Teys form was down on what we saw in 2013-14 but I think he's more than capable and if Joey is to be believed is the teams best one-on-one defender.

Either Gibbo or Wilson to run the point. I wouldn't keep both because frankly I don't think they worked this season. I didn't think Wilson was a good signing but he proved me wrong. Gibbo played mostly in the 2 spot and it really didn't work, he's a PG and tends to go missing when playing SG. I know he's our captain and a current Boomer but the question remains, will he go missing at PG as well? Daly isn't a bad backup PG, but he's not a starter.

Creek I think deserves to keep his starting spot. He was one of the most improved players in the league this year and showed what he can do given good minutes and a relatively injury free run. Not sure who I'd have as his backup. I know he's not a bench player but I wouldn't mind seeing Oscar Forman coming home. He's still one of the best forwards in the league and still one of the best outside shots. Having to face a slasher like Creek one minute and the range of Forman the next wouldn't be easy to defend.

I don't think we'll have either BJ or Crawford next season. If the current front court returns there is really no place for BJ (sadly because I think he's a quality player). Crawford played less and less minutes as the season went on and while I think he's a better 3-point shot than say, Scott Christopherson, I think he'll be released.

So, my team would be:

C - Johnson / Schenscher
PF - Motum / Petrie
SF - Creek / Forman (if available)
SG - Import/Newley / Teys
PG - Gibbo/Wilson / Daly

Whether that team is above or below the points cap I have no idea and I really couldn't be bothered looking it up.
