When does roster start and who can make top 4
VC starts this Friday, first round published tomorrow usually.
Anyone can make it from here. All teams currently 0-0
Two pools for VC, are you asking who the top four in each could be, or the top two in each? Men or women?
Draw is out, only one week but we know who is in which pool now.
Pool 1 - Men
Diamond Valley
Eltham
Dandenong
Melbourne
Nunawading
Geelong
Bulleen
Coburg
Oakleigh
Broadmeadows
Pool 2 - Men
Keilor
Warrandyte
Hawthorn
Knox
Camberwell
Whittlesea
Waveryley
Frankston
Werribee
Sandringham
Out of interest is this your predicted order of each pool or just a list of the teams??
Yes if in order how do to quantify Eltham , Dandenong and Diamond valley above the Tigers and no not from Tigers but Geelong.

Any interested results from the first week of VC? Any early upsets? Trends that may continue?
Melbourne 60 smacked Diamond Valley 43, not so much a surprise result but I thought the Valley boys would be closer than that.
Similar with Keilor 70 over Warrandyte 35 although both the Tigers and Thunder look like they are going to be top teams this season!
Knox 53 over Camberwell 49 was a close game, no surprise though.
Dandenong 69 to Nunuwading 39 shows that when the Rangers hit their form they are going to be tough. Not sure about what happened to the Specters in this one?
Bulleen 55 to Coburg 50 is about what we would expect and Eltham 53 over Geelong 46 seems they are close but Eltham too good on the night.
Oakleigh are an honest hard working team and scored 60 over Broadmeadows who will be in Reserve I think, scoring only 48.
Hawthorn went on a spree scoring 70 against Whittlesea 44, maybe the Pacers are missing players?
Waverley 65 over Frankston 49, no surprise really, but Werribee 63 over Sandringham 37 was a blow out I didn't anticipate.
I didn't see these games but will see most teams play and have seen them during grading, any comments from people at games, happy to here them.
Eltham was missing our shooting guard with an injury , but to be fair so was Geelong. Will be a corker when we replay.
Warrandyte lead Keilor just before halftime, before losing by 35 points. Warrandyte with a couple of injuries I noticed including their best player. Keilor hard to stop(like most teams), when they got momentum going their way
Frankston had 6 plays so they were very under manned only 5 down at 3/4 time so I would say that is a fair effort.
Went along to see Melbourne tonight to see whether the hype matched the reality.
Came away instead impressed with Oakleigh. And no I am not the poster everybody is hating on in this forum.
Melbourne lead 13-9 at 1/4 time and then blew the game out to 33-13 at the half and I was expecting a big Melbourne win. Instead I witnessed an amazing comeback from an Oakleigh team that rattled Melbourne to the core.
With 90 seconds to go the Oakleigh boys had it back to just 2 points and had two good looks at a 3, but didn't take them. Melbourne eventually milked the clock for the last 30 seconds to survive the scare with a 4 point win.
A great game from both sides, but especially from the Oakleigh boys as I wasn't expecting that!
Maybe some should reassess them, i certainly am after what I saw.
Nice post anon^ just the kind of review people like to read, non bias and no names mentioned. Good for the Oakleigh boys, did Melbourne have the entire team?
Great question, I too wondered why anon didn't mention Melbourne played with 7...

In pool 1 Dandenong, Eltham, Melbourne and Diamond Valley seem to be powerful teams that will hold a mortgage on the top 4 positions. It will be a dogfight to see who can make it into VC after 9 rounds in that pool.
In pool 2 it may already be decided, I can't see Werribee, Hawthorn, Knox, Waverley or Keilor dropping down out of the top 5 this season.
Men's 18 VC divisions of course...
Anon 204 I didn't mention it as Oakleigh also had players out watching on. Are you telling me that the mighty Melbourne Tigers are using player unavailability as an excuse? I bet they weren't thinking that when they were up 20.
Both teams had players out, that happens during the course of any season. Teams that enjoy the most success, cope with that as Melbourne did by withstanding a spirited challenge from Oakleigh.
Melbourne has 5 state players in it's ranks does it not?
Oakleigh has none and is in VC for the first time. I was expecting a dominant performance from Melbourne, as I would expect everybody else would have. Don't take credit away from the Oakleigh kids with a poor post like that.
Bear - I am not as sure as you that the top 4 is so locked in after 2 rounds in Pool 1.

Anon^, I would love to be wrong with some of those predictions, it is just my thoughts at the moment, but take your point that it is early in the season cheers...
Are Oakleigh the new Corio Bay? So much woofing...
Bear you are 100% right with your early tips. With top 4 teams. If teams play to potential.
Anon 305, maybe it's just an great story creating some interest. A club from nowhere pushing a powerhouse makes a great read. I am not from Oakleigh so no snide comments please! I posted the above summary of Melbourne vs Oakleigh as it was great game from both teams worth sharing.
Why the put down?
PS. I also noticed in the U16 state team an Oakleigh kid was announced. Was that woofing as well?
Because you pretending to "not be from Oakleigh" and saying it in all of your post, yet ALL of your stuff is pro-Oakleigh is so transparent it is laughable. And after you really, haven't achieved anything. But hey, keep talking up this club that "you aren't at"...
So, we think already that VC will end up being made up from
Melb
DV
Dandy
Eltham
Wav
Werr
Haw
Knox
Keilor
Then who else will come in to the top 10
Pick any one from Pool A out of
Nuna
Oak
Geel
Bull
Coburg
Broady
How'd Oakleigh go tonight? That's all I care about
I think the winner between Coburg, Geelong and the mighty Oakleigh's will be that final team to get to VC this season, but they will struggle to win a game.
The other two will probably feature in VC Res finals!
Tanking possible, anyone?
Sandringham could be a smokey in pool 2, look out if they get on a run!
Oakleigh got over Nunuwading last night, Geelong got smashed by Dandenong and Coburg didn't quite have enough to get too close to Diamond Valley. No surprise results in pool 1 so far.
This week we see Elthan v Melbourne and Oakleigh v Coburg. Thee results will be hug in the context of who ends up where in Pool 1.
Diamond Valley should account for Geelong, Bulleen will likely go down to Dandenong and Nunawading shouldn't lose to Broadmeadows.
Could be between Oakleigh and Coburg, who ever wins will have a step on 5th place!
Bearing any major comeback I don't see Coburg challenging for 5th spot seeing as they are already 0-3
It might come down to the Oakleigh v Geelong game when it happens? Although Geelong aren't getting any home games of late so the Oak's will probably play with an advantage!
Any results from last night, the VJBL is suffering Big V'itis and lagging behind in posting scores?
Diamond Valley shot well to get the points against turnover plagued Geelong at DV. I think it was by about 21 points in the end.

The top 8 teams look like they are about right, the top 4 will be interesting, but right now with only a few first round games to go it is a three way race to see who will scrape into VC. Who will make it between Werribee and Sandringham or Oakleigh and Geelong?
Here is the pool 1 ladder with 4 games to go:
1 MELBOURNE 5 5 0 0 0 0 300 228 131.58 15
2 DANDENONG 5 4 0 1 0 0 301 188 160.11 14

10 BROADMEADOWS 5 0 5 0 0 0 253 312 81.09 5
And here is pool 2:
1 HAWTHORN 5 4 1 0 0 0 326 260 125.38 13
2 KNOX 5 4 1 0 0 0 294 255 115.29 13

This week Keilor plays Sandringham in a crucial game that could decide fifth spot in pool 2, while in pool 1 Oakleigh needs to beat Bulleen to have any shot at VC and Geelong has a depleted roster going into the Broadmeadows clash.
I think the Keilor v Sandringham game takes on a lot of significance as to which team could make VC. Should be a tight game.
Oakleigh well and truly in the hunt with Geelong going down by a point to Broadmeadows.

Bulleen lost 2 guards last week, one with an ACL and the other with a broken leg in the same game. Not saying this would have changed the Oakleigh outcome but it doesn't help.
O.K. I get Bulleen's situation but what happened down Geelong ?. They played Broady in grading and accounted for them easily.
Geelong down to 8 players for that game, just didn't play well enough and no inside presence without their 5 man. They will go to reserve I am predicting. Will probably only have 8 again against Tigers next Friday too. Teamwork is an issue I hear.
Thanks ^ Anon. You would like to think that by U18s that all teams understand the importance of Team work. Sadly too many teams that look good on paper cannot work together on the floor. If you talk to State coaches they all say putting the right skill/ personalities mix into there teams go hand in hand. I hope they work this out.
Teams sometimes work it out too late and miss out on VC or miss out on making the Classic but when they get their act together can beat any other team. Geelong on paper should be a VC team, but it may not always lie with the players either. One player just up and left the team, so they only have 9 for the season. By the time they work it all out they will probably be a strong VCR side.
Wonder if some of those Oakleigh haters who posted earlier in this thread will be "man enough" to recognize them if they make the top 10.
Not Oakleigh haters, just sick to death of you not shutting up about them. Congrats you will make top 5, I hope you do well up there. Just ease up on the "how good are Oakleigh for a small club" posts every 2nd post.

I happened to see Oakleigh play a couple of weeks ago. They were well drilled and had plenty of spark early in the game, but I believe they were missing one or two key payers and couldn't keep up the intensity for 4 quarters.
They are a decent VC reserve team in my opinion, but will struggle to win a game if they make VC. They will have done well to make VC if they get there, but it will be at the lower end of the competition.
The stronger teams in VC are just able to sustain their intensity for longer and have weapons Oakleigh lack, but good on them, they are a great bunch of kids that try hard all game.

I see Keilor and Sandringham had a 55-55 draw. I wonder how that will impact the pool and the top 5 in that pool? Very interesting...
Anon 920 I am actually from Bulleen who lost to Oakleigh on Friday. I have been following the thread from the start as obviously I am interested in the comp I play in.
Nobody from Oakleigh has posted for some time from what I can see.
Which club are you from out of interest?

Top 5 looks to be set in pool 1 with Dandenong, Melbourne, Eltham and Oakleigh mathematically in VC and Diamond Valley too far away to be caught by Geelong. Good work to those teams and good luck in the next phase

Hi all - just one little thing - if only you could see the joy that it has bought to the Oakleigh boys who have been together for a number of years .They are happy with any outcome and just loving their basketball .As a small club they are happy just to be there .
I feel sorry for Geelong if the posts are true as they were a terrific team and played so well against us in a game played in very good spirit .
Wow what a result by Oakleigh!
Let's hope all the haters don't come on here bagging their supporters like the above. Great to see them achieving what they are and indeed enjoying the season.
Bear would you reassess them at all? Going through their results they have now drawn with Dandenong and lost to Melbourne by 3. I haven't seen them play but just those two results suggest they are better than VC reserve as your posted above.

Anon^ I can only give an opinion on when they played Geelong and how I observed them that night, compared with the other teams we have played in VC to date and what I know they can bring to the court.
The Geelong team has been hit hard with injury and player loss, unfortunately they also have to have a good look at themselves in how they play and how they are responding to the coaching in their losses.
No need to feel bad or sorry for the Supercats, they don't deserve VC this season, so they will go back and have a good crack at reserve I think...
Great to see Oakleigh get into VC, they deserve it, also I believe I have not seen them play with their entire team, so maybe they can cover losses better than a team like Geelong and maybe they will be able to contain teams in VC for longer with their full roster.
From what I know, their games v Melbourne and Dandenong resulted in Oakleigh's favour (not a win but a decent result) partially due to key players being out for both the Tigers and the Rangers.
No excuses, just an observation as I think Oakleigh will win games if they are fully fit and firing, otherwise they may struggle.
That said, it remains to be seen how Oakleigh will go in VC, as I have observed, they are a great group with lots of intensity, but to stay at the level they need to for 4 quarters will be the challenge before them.
Mind you, we can say that about almost all the teams in VC and VC Reserve, it is still a tough competition, at both levels and good teams punish you for your mistakes and weaknesses.
Well, your observation is wrong. Look, from what I hear Dandenong had 1 player out and oakleigh had 2... Dandenong should have accounted for them easily from what I hear but hey, both teams are in VC so there should be some great competition when both sides have all players back
Oakleigh had 3 players out, Dandenong had two out.

I wish them well, either way anon good luck to them. Happy to be proven wrong and see them win through to the finals.
Only my opinion.
Let's see how it goes shall we.
Anon 821 don't know where you get your information from. Our boys had two players out injured and then lost their captain in the first quarter after which they lead Dandenong all game.
Dandy came back in the last to hit the front by 4 points. In the last minute Oakleigh brought it back to level and had a chance to win it in the dying seconds and could have easily won it. Dandenong had their chances as well. One of the quickest and most physical games of basketball I have seen.
It was a great game of basketball and both teams were spent at the end of it and yes I am from Oakleigh.
Congrats to both groups of boys, as a spectator it was terrific to watch.
Isn't it interesting when one of the power clubs don't go as expected the tired line of players missing always comes out?
All teams at this point of the season will be suffering from injury, niggles and even tiredness as these 16 and 17 year old boys juggle, school, family and sporting commitments.
Our team has been missing key players all season either due to injury or school camps or sports commitments.
We have not field a full team in any game this season, but are just getting on with it. Field your best teams and play your arses off i say.
Isn't it the Oakleigh woofers who are always mentioning players being out?
Hardly a power club...
Mentioning the excuses other clubs have when Oakleigh actually have a good game, come on...
So many keyboard warriors here, it's about the kids, imagine what they would think if they saw this, just let them play and everyone chill out.

What happened between Sandringham and Knox, why is there no result yet?
Well, then if Sandringham defeats Warrandyte and Hawthorn does a number on Werribee it opens up the pool again. This week's games will be interesting indeed.
Diamond Valley and Oakleigh had a draw, more draws this season than I can remember at the same time.
Sandringham smashed Warrandyte and Werribee were hammered by Hawthorn so it looks like Sandy could be the last team entering VC?
No real surprises in other games either, except maybe Geelong losing at home to Nunawading!
On Geelong's recent form, they have got another tough one next week Coburg.
How come that game is at the State centre, not at Coburg?
I believe Montmorency High School for the last free years, but great to see the State Centre being utilised.
Geelong the walking wounded right now, wonder if Coburg are fully fit? No home court advantage for Coburg then.

So, results should be in and the VC and Reserve for under 18's can start in earnest.
Do we have any ideas of who the top 4 might be at the end of the season and do we have any surprise results?
In pool 2 Sandringham's big win and Werribee's close 1 point loss was the only possible change to VC, well done to the Sabres and bad luck to the Devils who will probably look to win Reserve now!
This is how they ended up for VC:
Knox
Hawthorn
Waverley
Keilor
Sandringham
No surprises here for me really, but I guess this pool was a close one and Werribee or Whittlesea had their chances.
In pool 1 it was a slightly different story with no results last Friday making any difference to the final top 5 places. Just perhaps the final placings of the top 5 and how they enter VC. The fact that the mighty Melbourne Tigers of the last couple of years were found to be beatable does make the whole competition one to look forward to.
Dandenong
Eltham
Melbourne
Diamond Valley
Oakleigh
Nunawading may rue the fact that they had a loss where Oakleigh had two draws and Geelong's potential at the start of the season dropped them out due to the inconsistent results they produced but both will impact the Reserve competition I think.
My top 4 prediction at the end of VC is (not in order):
Dandenong
Eltham
Melbourne
Knox
For Reserve:
Werribee
Nunuwading
Whittlesea
Geelong

Oakleigh beat Eltham?! Surely Eltham would have had some kids missing
Results from last Friday night see some moves being made in VC Reserve 18 men.
Geelong's intentions seem clear with a hammering of Broady 87-47 giving the Supercats a chance to take top spot.
Coburg did them a huge favour knocking off Whittlesea 69-60 in a slight surprise, not taking anything away from the Giants who can turn it on at times.
Frankston remain in the hunt rolling Bulleen 76-64 while close games resulted between Nunawading defeating Camberwell 64-62 and Werribee hanging on to beat Warrandyte 57-54.
Ladder sees three teams on top with 8 wins and a cracker game between ladder leaders Geelong and Whittlesea at the Arena this Friday night.
In VC 18 men Melbourne sits top one game clear of Knox with three teams a further two games back rounding out the top five teams.
Last friday Oakleigh went down in a tight contest to Hawthorn 49-52, starting a trend in close contests that shows how competative the competition is.
Melbourne got over Keilor 59-54, low scores and defensive minded basketball seems to be the trend this week.
Waverley defeated a disappointing Eltham 42-37 keeping the Wildcats on thier slide down the ladder recently. They (Eltham) have lost two in a row now and will not be able to make a top two spot from here I don't think.
Dandenong came back to hold out Diamond Valley and their shooting team 69-59 while Knox proved too powerful for Sandringham 52-44.
Three rounds to go before finals and what is apparent is that all contests should be tight for the remainder of the season, any team slightly off on the night could risk losing if they don't show up and play their best.
This Friday night there is also a cracker game at Knox (Court 5 would you believe) with ladder leaders Melbourne and Knox to fight it out in a very important game. One worthy of a better fixture than out back on court 5 I would have thought?
Where is the respect for VC 18 men these days, gosh!?
Baller6
Years ago
Court 5 is good, just no seating which is what you are getting at id say. Should be an interesting game.
@Baller6 don't you expect that an 18 men VC game worthy of a final would be played at least on the main court or a court with some bloody seating, what is on courts 1-4 that is more important? Ridiculous! Even Geelong is using their show court now, so they will be playing VC reserve on an excellent court while VC is out on the back clocks! :(
What's going on at Eltham? Those results are strange after winning the classic.
Results are in from last night's games, here is a short recap based on recent form and the scores only.
VC 18 Men:
The ladder leader Melbourne have announced themselves as a favourite to win the competition with a resounding 75-55 performance against Knox.
Keilor proved they are a solid performer defeating Waverley 60-52 at home.
Eltham 62 bounced back against Diamond Valley 47 but can they keep going? Diamond Valley have dropped a couple lately showing how tough VC is.
Dandenong 46 to Oakleigh 38 was a close result and a good win for the Rangers at home.
Sandringham went to Hawthorn and pulled off a great win away 61-53.
VC Reserve Men
Playing at Dandenong (seems the Coburg boys don't have a home most weeks), Coburg did manage to get over a determined Nunawading 56-54 in what must have been a cracker game.
At Balwyn the Camberwell Dragons were hammered by Werribee 50-33, showing the Devils are a team to be reckoned with.
At home the Geelong Supercats proved they are going to be hard to topple with a 89-69 win over the strong and quick Whittlesea Pacers. A lack of height against Geelong, Werribee or Coburg could be the downfall of other teams.
Warrandyte 74 to Frankston 67 was also played at Dandenong and another high scoring affair.
Lastly Bulleen 59 defeated a hapless Broadmeadows 47 at East Doncaster.
One round left before finals and results are in, with some surprises:
VC 18 Men
Melbourne went down to Hawthorn 56-74, so what happened, does anyone know? Great effort by the magic.
Knox smacked Waverley 70-43 and Oakleigh also smashed Diamond Valley 73-43, anyone care to provide their takes on what happened in these games?
Another win by Eltham 57-47 against Keilor and a regulation win for Dandenong 49-38 over Sandringam.
VC Res 18 Men
A draw 58-58 in the game between Broadmeadows and Warrandyte while Geelong continues to dominate 72-59 against Nunawading.
Werribee trounces Frankston 69-45, Coburg does what it has to in a win over luckless Camberwell 58-47 and Whittlesea proves far to strong bouncing back 86-50 against Bulleen.
No real surprises in Reserve, but some upsets in the VC this week!
Oakleigh v Sandringham game next Friday night will decide which one will stay in the top 8 and play finals, the loser could go out if Waverley gets over Dandenong in another key game in VC.
In reserve Broadmeadows v Frankston and Warrandyte v Nunawading are the games to watch, only change possible for making finals is for 8th spot between the Broncos and Venom.
In Reserve Geelong have top spot sewn up I reckon, the fight between Werribee and Whittlesea for second spot on the ladder should be a cracker. Melbourne seem to have top spot in their grasp 2 points ahead of Dandenong and Knox in VC, can't see the Eagles upsetting the Tigers but you never know in VC!

I haven't seen Melbourne play much before but last night they only had 5 players against Hawthorn, and then lost one of their bigs early in the fourth due to being fouled out, team appeared to be riddled with injuries as well, thus they finished the last 8 minutes or so with only four players... They seemed a little undermanned
That explains a lot, their main big is in NZ at the moment so they would have been light on for players regardless. They will bounce back, just a hick cup!
