D Waiters, JR Smith, Shumpert in three-team trade

Woj:

Three Cleveland players, including Waiters, on the way out, league sources tell Yahoo Sports. There's a trade call set for later tonight.

Windhorst:
The Cavs are in three-way trade talks with Oklahoma City and the New York Knicks, sources tell ESPN.com

Woj suggested Reggie Jackson could be part of the deal.

Waiters isn't playing tonight in advance of the trade. Delly has started in the absence of Irving, LeBron and Waiters.

Edit: Woj says JR Smith ad Shumpert to Cleveland, Waiters to Thunder, Reggie Jackson to the Knicks.

Edit 2: Woj now saying Jackson is not involved.

Apparently Jackson isn't included now. That is a better deal for the Thunder if they can keep Jackson.

Ultimately though I really think the Knicks win this trade. Clears up a heap of cap room, get a pick and can attack free agency.

Haha the Cavs are just basically trading Waiters for an older version of himself with no upside in JR Smith. Shumpert is a tad overrated as well, you'll see that once he's playing on a real NBA basketball team.

They had to get rid of Waiters but this trade in no way addresses any of the myriad things the Cavs need, so I'm scratching my head. Are they using the trade exception to absorb that Smith contract? Are they f%^king nuts?

- Knicks are slowly getting their ledger squared and managed to score a (low) 1st round pick while doing so.

- OKC get a headcase in a high risk / high reward gamble, hoping that their strong locker room will keep him in check. Waiters could very well be very productive there. But is it really a high risk? OKC showed they don't want their late first rounders when they signed and dumped their 2014 first rounder to the D-League in an unprecedented move, so they are basically getting Waiters for nothing.

But what the hell are the Cavs doing?

Would Cav's be looking to on-Trade Smith/Shump at some stage....A lock down defender n the wing helps but they need rim protection....

Nah you don't trade Shumpert, they badly need his perimeter D. If he can put in consistent effort, he'll be a force in the NBA.

And I'll say the opposite with regard to his success, Mick. Whether he's overrated or not doesn't matter; it's about how his skill set suits the team (which is the case with any player in any team in any league in history, thus why 'better player' debates are so hard). Offensively, he's a slasher and spot-up shooter who thrives off penetration. Who the heck gets to the lane in New York? Defensively, Cleveland are still shit but he'll probably be a little less mindful of having to help out his teammates on this team.

As part of the deal, Dion Waiters will go to the Thunder, J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert would go to the Cavs and three players with nonguaranteed contracts -- Alex Kirk and Lou Amundson from the Cavs and Lance Thomas from the Thunder -- would go to the Knicks. As part of the deal, the Thunder are sending a protected future first round pick to the Cavs and the Cavs are sending their 2019 second-round pick to the Knicks, sources said.

Smart by all teams but Cavs still need to find a rim protector...

How is this smart for Cleveland? Cavs basically just trade Waiters for Waiters and the injury prone Iman Shumpert, eating up their very valuable trade exception in the process to fill a position that isn't of need. Not only is this not smart, I would go so far as to say it is extremely dumb.

Smith is proven in the 6th man instant offense role though, Waiters not so much.

But it's just another guy they don't need.

Smith is a known nut case, he could destroy what is left of the chemistry at the Cavs and lead to them firing the coach.

Seems weird as they desperately need a big guy and are using their only decent trade asset to get 2 SG.
They do get a pick and may need that to finalise another trade for a C.

haha ive been calling for cavs to trade waiters for shumpert since the start of the season..

shumpert is a decent to good wing defender and that is something the cavs need. waiters doesnt really give the cavs something they need.

sure , the cavs also need another big as they have nothing beyond varejao but its a tough market to find those guys.

So the cavs used their Varejao injury exception to facilitate this trade. They still have the trade exception to use.
