ABC expected to axe WNBL

Australia's peak women’s sporting body fears that young female athletes will be left without role models due to cuts in ABC TV coverage.

Cost-cutting at the national broadcaster will see the end of coverage of the women’s national soccer league at the end of the current season, with a similar fate likely to befall the Women’s National Basketball League.

Australian Womensport and Recreation Association executive officer Leanne Evans says taking the two leagues off the air would leave a gaping hole.

i would much prefer to watch a WNBL game where the girls play basketball, rather then the NBL where clearly the males, just haven't got what it takes. And yes i am a male myself.

cuts everywhere, real estate unaffordable, multi nationals withdrawing everything from australia, manufacturing all going off shore, working just to pay utility bills - what sort of australia is being left for the next generation ? The australian way of fair go and look after one another that my parents brought us up to believe in so strongly is not the only way in this world and the current activities reflect. we will reap what we sow in this world.

"WNBL averaging 60,000 viewers every Saturday"

No it's not, not if you're using the same measure as the 34,000.

Sad but WNBL is a past time not deemed a real legit sport for national TV. Its just soon boring! It even struggles to a degree in the US so what do people really expect!

what exactly are the intentions of the people controlling our resources ? a lot of Australia is owned off shore now - real estate, businesses etc - doesn't matter what the government thinks or what philosophies they have - they have handed it over to people with no intention of making anything better for those of us that live here but their profits and then they will move on.

So sad some of the comments on here putting down women's basketball. Thanks to women's basketball over the past 20 years the men's team have kept good funding from the government as they have certainly failed on the international stage while the women's team win medal after medal. Where did these women get their start? the WNBL.

It is short sighted by the ABC to cut women's sport from its programming.

Perhaps if we gave Brigit $60,000 to design body suits for the teams then "budgie-smuggler" Daddy will put up some more money for the ABC to televise the award winning designs.

I don't know if we can trust commercial networks to put WNBL on TV. I don't think the numbers are there. ABC was the best bet so this is a real shame, and after such a long partnership.

Health issues cost us enough money that we really should be seeing value in promoting sport to children, even if it costs us money to do so. Mens sport has so many financial examples (cricket, AFL, etc), but women's sport needs things like netball and basketball out there.

The WNBL's ratings haven't been too different to the NBL's this year. Personally, I watch more WNBL than NBL and go to more of their games. The talent on display gets better every year and it's a real shame that the budget costs have forced the ABC's hand. I hope the league can find a new FTA station prepared to air it as it's a great product.

If the ABC isn't going to broadcast niche and unviable areas like WNBL, SANFL, regional and rural services etc, then what's it there for? Private media companies already cover the main news.
The flabby, massive bureaucracy is all in Ultimo, and the good bits that do serve the country and the ABC charter are the bits that get hacked. Bad call. Massive salaries for protected species like Kerry O'Brien who seem to do virtually nothing except front a once-a-week program don't help their cause either.
This will make it easier to abolish the ABC altogether, as they are not fulfilling their charter.
Even Fairfax might turn a healthy profit if the taxpyer-funded ABC stops competing with private providers ....

The ABC and WNBL are one and the same - not commercially viable. The former's existence and the latter's television coverage only exist due to HANDOUTS from the taxpayer. While the men's league has to actually go out there and negotiate a commercial deal. How is that fair? Once both ABC is scrapped and ABC coverage of WNBL then the WNBL can go prove itself commercially. Why do we have to prop it up if there is interest then it will get coverage, if there isn't enough interest then it doesn't warrant coverage. pretty basic concept.

Rubbish, the WNBL isnt just a sports competition. Its also a place where Female Basketball players can aspire to. Coverage on tv lets the teams attract sponsors and the like and get its image out there. If you lose coverage, then by the same token you have sponsors whose imagery is only possible going to be seen on the occasionaly sports story on tv and by the people attending the game.
