Basketball develops skills for AFL-Clarkson
I had the pleasure of attending the AFL Coaches Association Awards at the MCG on Friday night. Alistair Clarkson was the guest speaker and he talked about a number issues but the one that interested me from basketball perspective was the importance of basketball at a young age. He has a 10 year old son who plays and he says he learns about offence, defence( man to man and zones), transition and most importantly decision making which will all untimately assist in his football. He said another bonus is the ratio of numbers. One coach for every 8-10 kids whereas his football team has one coach per 27 players. He said with those ratios they are really only baby sitting sessions.
The key pillars he talked about were communication, achieving buy in to the clubs vision, consistency and continuity and preparation for training sessions.
