what will the opals squad look like now?

with jackson, bishop, o'hea and batkovic not playing in the world champs and kunek unlikely to make it, whos makes the final 12 women roster?

my pick:
Mitchell/Hurst
Allen/Phillips/Snell
Taylor/Jarry
Francis/Hodges
Cambage/Richards/Tolo

Biggest joke out with ohea not playing. Great player just watching because training demands could not be met. I'm sure alternative training options should have been discussed to have her playing.

My team

Phillips/Mitchell/Madgen
Allen/Snell
Jarry/Taylor
Francis/Hodges
Cambage/Tolo

Either Kunek or Nat Burton for last spot

Looks OK anon, but Madgen isn't a point guard!

and Allen ain't a 2-guard!

I hate seeing these hypothetical teams with Hodges in them. I'm not saying she's not one of our best at that position, but it just shows how stagnant our talent pool has been :(
Ditto Snell.
And the idea of Francis being in the team is just depressing. Awful defender, low basketball IQ, erratic. But still a realistic chance too :/

Starters and depth rotation:
Mitchell/phillips/hurst
Allen/Phillips/snell
Taylor/jarry/Allen
Francis/hodges/Richards
Cambage/Richards/tolo/Francis

Madgen has shown nothing in the lead up games.
Burton has shown nothing in the wnbl, seabl or lead up.

Other Late inclusions?
Alice kunek (unlikely due to injury)
Katie Rae ebzery
Steph cumming
Kelly Wilson
Rebecca cole
Mia Newley

If possible I would add
Ohea for snell
Kunek for jarry
Bishop for hodges
Batkovic for tolo

^ maybe add foley as sg and Langford as pf.
Or possibly throw talbot mijovic or bunton into the fire.
Talbot has good defence, mijovic has good height and shooting and bunton has strong body and good rebounding.

Its all but set - Foley , Langford etc not this time. Nobody get near team USA. Need some new names to step up and stake their international claims. Need some x factor.

Hodges at pf will do ok for the group stage with games against Belarus Cuba and Korea but against teams in the next bracket she will struggle due to size(both height and strength)

Francis at 6'4 with a much bigger frame is a better option.
I would take cambage and Richards as the primary centres with Francis as a 4/5 so tolo a centre and burton a power forward would get the boot and I'd give a shot to mijovic as another 4.

Possible front court combos: no tolo or burton.
Hodges pf, cambage c
Hodges pf, Richards c
Hodges pf, Francis c
Francis pf, cambage c
Francis pf, Richards c
Francis pf, mijovic c
Mijovic pf, cambage c
Mijovic pf, richards c
Mijovic pf Francis c

WTF !!!!

Hurst should be there , but won't be. A player who is clearly good enough but like Phillips, just does not fit in well with the nepotism that seem to have been established as the hidden cornerstone of Opals coaching by Graf.

Too many centres.
Cambage, Tolo, Richards & Burton are all centres and nothing else. Should only take 2 of them. Any more is a waste. Even though Burton is smallish her game is that of a centre. Albeit a mobile one. But from further than 1 metre from the basket she is ineffective.
Brings Francis into the equation because at least she has some range on her shot.
Mijovic god I hope not. A tall with a phobia of the paint is not what we need.

Wtf, if hurst is not going, who are the point guards going to be?
Mitchell, Phillips and Wilson?

Could bunton play pf? She has good physical size, height, mobility. Has no real offensive game though but is a descent rebounder.

I think ardossi would make a good international pf, strong, 188cm, good all round player.

Lavey?! Seriously?
Hurst has so much more to bring to the team. Best true point guard option we have.
Lavey isnt ready for that level at all... yet.

Maybe the O'Hea supporters should back off a bit. Word is that she didn't get on with team mates and coach at London Olympics( evidently thought she deserved more time on court) and made her displeasure known. That sort of negativity breeds through a team if not stamped out. Maybe she'll get the message and do a better job at winning a position for the next Olympics. The sum of the team is greater than the individual.

Yeah she is a renowned prima donna, and is definitely not going to be included because it was her that spat the dummy and made a big show about withdrawing herself from Opals selection this year.

Unfortunate because purely on playing ability she is an automatic selection.
Bishop being out really hurts too. She'd not spectacular but is a clear level above some of the other names being nominated for her spot. I mean Ardossi?? LOL!

If Francis doesn't make the opals squad and start at pf, Joyce must have a huge hole in his head.

Just another lazy 37 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks in the win over bendigo.
Leads the scoring avg and is second in rebounding avg in the seabl, also has good 3 point percentage and is a excellent foul shooter.

Joyce was always the wrong choice. I wonder if they ever approached brondello?

The squad would look much more promising if ohea and bishop we're playing. Really feel for Jackson ... Also a pity batkovic needed some time off. Penaluna May have been a good choice for pf too.

If everyone was available, I would have liked to see:

Phillips/Mitchell/hurst
Ohea/Allen
Taylor/kunek
Jackson/Francis/bishop
Cambage/Richards

But now:
Phillips/Mitchell/hurst
Allen/cumming (snell out)
Taylor/jarry
Francis/hodges (burton out)
Cambage/Richards (tolo out)
Another power forward, Langford maybe or play Richards at pf and add tolo at centre.

I would have taken kunek, but I think she's still injured.
