Cartoon Network hoops Adelaide-bound

Received a press release from Basketball Australia that might interest a few people, probably parents with young children interested in basketball.

Adelaide is the Next Destination for Australia's Leading Kids Basketball Program, "Aussie Hoops," and Cartoon Network's Mega Clinic!

On 28 July 2005, Cartoon Network and Aussie Hoops will hold their third Basketball Mega Clinic at Starplex, a brand new sports complex located in Adelaide South Australia. Hosted by Basketball Association of South Australia, the Basketball Mega Clinic is a joint effort between Basketball Australia and the Cartoon Network, bringing Aussie Hoops basketball to children in the Adelaide area.

Cartoon Network joined forces with Basketball Australia's Aussie Hoops program earlier this year and this will be the third of four mega clinics held around Australia involving 2,400 Australian 'Aussie Hoopers.' Three FREE sessions will be held at the Adelaide Clinic: 9:30am to 11:45am (registered schools only), 12:15pm 3:00pm (registered schools only) and 3:45pm 6:00pm (open to individual registration).

These clinics will introduce school children aged 6-12 years to basketball and provide basic and fun skills by players from the Central District Lions ABA team and WNBL team the Adelaide Fellas. Cartoon Network's popular toon star Scooby-Doo will also be present and take a shot at learning all the fun skills of the game at the Mega Clinics.

"Following the huge success of the two events held in Sydney and Cairns, Cartoon Network is looking forward to the next one in Adelaide," said Robert Gilby, Vice President, Network Development & Strategic Marketing, Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Inc. "As a responsible broadcaster, we are continually looking at ways to keep our audiences entertained and stimulate them with activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. The partnership with Aussie Hoops allows us to integrate two things that Australian kids love - cartoons and sports together. Through this event, we hope to encourage kids in Adelaide to participate and enjoy this great game."

Aussie Hoops Coordinator for South Australia, Danny O'Brien said "The Aussie Hoops program is a vital part of the promotion of an active lifestyle through the sport of basketball and the basketball community is grateful for the tremendous support from Cartoon Network and Scooby-Doo in promoting the FUN and participation philosophies of the Aussie Hoops program to even more South Australian children."

In the recent Cartoon Network study on kids' lifestyles, New Generations" Australia 2004, it was revealed that Australian kids aged 7-14 years lead an active and balanced lifestyle, with 60% playing sport for an average of 45 minutes a day. In an endeavour to enhance the experience of playing sports in a fun, 'toony' way, Cartoon Network has joined forces with Australia's leading basketball program targeted at primary school children, Aussie Hoops, as the exclusive children's television network sponsor.

The first two clinics were held at Bankstown Basketball Stadium in Sydney in February and at Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre in Cairns in May. Children of all skill levels enjoyed hours of fun, played with Scooby Doo, Aussie Hoops mascot Duncan and professional basketball players and coaches.

To support the Mega Clinics presented by Cartoon Network, the Network has created a series of unique on-air spots to ensure that the fun message of basketball will reach hundreds of thousands more potential 'Aussie Hoopers', and generate interest in the game.

Officially launched on 14 October 2002, Aussie Hoops was designed specifically for primary school aged children (aged 6-12 years) and is a joint initiative between Basketball Australia and the Australian Sports Commission. Delivered by local clubs and associations, the program provides primary schools and local associations nation-wide with the resources and qualified presenters to run tailor-made basketball programs.

The children are introduced to the Fun Time, Play Time, Game Time concept, where their skills are developed in an inclusive and fun environment and they are taken through steps that lead to playing the game of basketball with their friends. For more details on the program, please contact Basketball Australia on (02) 9764 3842, visit www.basketball.net.au, or log on to www.cartoonnetwork.com.au.

Participating kids will also receive a goody bag including a basketball, Cartoon Network/Aussie Hoops poster and Cartoon Network stickers. Lucky draws will also be held during the sessions for kids to win Cartoon Network Packs including a towel, bag, t-shirt and drink bottle. Do stay tuned for information on the upcoming Mega Clinic to be held in Victoria this November.

New Generations" Australia 2004 is a quantitative study that provides unique insights into the minds and habits of kids aged 7-14 years. This survey interviewed both kids and parents in equal number, with a total of 600 child/parent pairs. The study is the second fully localised study commissioned by Cartoon Network.

Cartoon Network is one of the most popular entertainment channels among kids and is currently seen in over 1.5 million cable homes in Australia. The Network is distributed on Austar, Foxtel and Optus. Launched in the Asia Pacific in 1994, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s (TBS) Cartoon Network offers the best in animated entertainment. Drawing from the world's largest cartoon library of Warner Bros., MGM and Hanna-Barbera titles, the Network also showcases original series including Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed, Edd n Eddy, I Am Weasel, Johnny Bravo, Mike Lu & Og, Sheep In The Big City, The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends under the Cartoon Cartoons banner.
