Local guard Sam Johns joins 36ers as dev player

Johns, 19 and 193cm, has clinched a development player role with the 2014 NBL runners-up and was elevated to a starter in a depleted Sixers team against Melbourne United for a trial game in Ballarat.

He scored Adelaide's first eight points without a miss, finished with 17 and had both coaches singing his praises.

"He was amazing," Adelaide coach Joey Wright said.

“It was like having another Gibbo (Olympian and captain Adam Gibson) on the floor.

“He played in the same fashion with his ability to be versatile — he defended bigs, he defended smalls and he has a real mature poise about him.”
Boti's story about Sam Johns

Haven't seen him play, but he sounds like one of those types coaches love as they step up to any level they face and find smart ways to defend any position they have to.

He should have been pickd up last year. Apart from being a very good player he is a classy guy unlike someone we got last year.

Sams stats from the U21 States were pretty awesome so well deserved I would say.

Last year I imagine it was Adnam and Sims. Probably Doyle too, and was Warbout still there or was it someone else?

Saw him play in high school a bit. Good luck to him.

My nephews played against him (and with him at U16 Nationals) all through juniors. Was always a good player. Was a "big" through most of his junior development from what I saw, but could hit the jumpshot as well, and handle the ball a bit.

Happy to see him picked up.

Im pretty sure Boty mentioned Adnam was going to the Hawks in their 10, and Daly will be our 10th man.

Big in juniors does not equate to big in NBL terms...

Of course it doesn't, especially as he is a 6-3 guy. I mentioned "played as a big in juniors", as he is now 6-3 maybe 6-4, so will probably be a perimeter player, but knows how to guard some guys who are bigger than himself.

Adnam will never ever ever play NBL. Why clubs persist with players who do not have the physical tools to compete is a waste of time. Same with Sims....had the ability and attributes but was a complete nutter. Why would you choose these guys in the first place?
