Day 3 Recap is now up on PnR who is covering the event!

Day 3 Recap | 2014 U16 Australian Junior Championships

After Day 3 there are only 3 undefeated teams remaining in the men's division while the women’s division looks to have come down to a 2-horse race. In the men’s, NSW Metro and VIC Metro are in fine form while New Zealand has very sneakily remained undefeated. The women’s action has seen VIC Metro dominate, with SA Metro also posting 2 impressive wins during Day 3′s action.

Day 4 Recap now up on PnR:

Day 4 Recap | 2014 U16 Australian Junior Championships

We've had an extremely exciting day of basketball during Day 4 of the U16 Australian Junior Championships - the undefeated become the defeated and some last-second finishes highlight today’s action. We also have some great games ahead of us on Day 5 as we’re slowly approaching the finals games.

BA's media is at rock bottom since they implemented the new website.

CoE info - to be update is all they have

U17 girls squad link to nothing

16's nationals competition stats not working

launch of Aussie Hoops - compare it to tennis Aus's hot shots and it got/get no coverage...

the biggest news in years - 2 nba champs and 2 drafted and all the potential about to come and they not championing it at all.

such missed opportunities I'll have to write a letter to the CEO oh wait there isn't one (not for 6 months) but thats okay its obvious they don't need one! alls well BA

Assuming NSW Country beat NSW Metro in their 1/4 final and QLD South beat SA Country in their 1/4 final, the two would meet in the semis. Winner of that would play the winner of the other semi..... out of ACT, SA Country, Vic Country or Vic Metro.

Great effort by the VICC boys to get over the line in a close one vs NSWC, now giving themselves a chance against NSWM in a quarter finals game.

That could be the pick of the games tonight, especially if the VICC boys can get their shooting caps on!

Also VICM v SAM in the boys at 5.00pm could be a cracker if SAM come to play.

SAM gave a good account of themselves against VICM boys last night, if they could have converted a couple of key shots late it could have gome down to the wire.

VICM looked just a little flat at times and turned it over against incredible pressure applied by a determined SAM team, but in the end the VICM boys held on and a late basket on the siren ended SAM's run.

It was an exciting although the error rate was high at times. Well done to both teams.

Also last night NSWM boys finished strongly to get over a gallant VICC who will rue their chances in the final quarter down by 10 but unable to bridge the gap.

There seemed to be no answer to stopping NSWM's No.8 who landed some key jump shots while VICC missed their attempts when they needed them in the second half especially.

A key moment at the end of the third saw a tech on the VICC coach for nothing too sinister that gave NSWM two points and the ball resulting in a long 3 on the siren and turned a 5 point lead to 10, almost killing the contest.

This was a momentum changer that really should not have been called as both coaches were animated at some no calls. Disappointing for the kids and everyone watching when the officials get it wrong like that IMO.

NSWM will be there pushing for a medal, they are a strong outfit. VICC rely too much on too few but if they shoot under 30% they can't expect to win either.

Vic only dominated pool A whilst QLD South and SA in pool B who were SA down 1 point at last meeting now both in the Gold Medal playoff... Tides are changing.... You can lose a game and still win if you win the right one and both teams did.... It is not always about Vic and great to see other teams shining through. The Opals currently have players from various states and it is great to see more talent coming through with a national spread.... Well done to all players representing theri state..

After 7 days of basketball and a number of close matchups, we're finally down to our Grand Final games. NSW Country is looking to repeat as champions in the men’s division, they’ll be up against an undefeated VIC Metro squad. In women’s basketball, SA Metro did the seemingly impossible by defeating VIC Metro in their quarterfinal matchup, they’ll face Queensland South who got the best of NSW Country in yet another game that went down to the wire. Here’s a preview of both the men’s and women’s Championship games.

The new finals format for 2014 has really put a cat amongst the pigeons! This was the same at 18's. In previous years many teams that have jagged a spot in the top eight quarter finals would have been playing off in the lower half of the competition. So a team that just squeezes through the week ultimately has a shot at a medal or top 4 finish, even winning just 2 of their pool games.
The standard this week was ordinary at times, WA, Qld and Tax are in big trouble looking at the standard of their teams. Vic County have slipped, although had their best boys player injured for the important part of the week. Well done to SAM girls, lots of heart and very well coached all week.

Couldn't agree more with above poster, Vic metro in general have an arrogant attitude when it comes to nationals in all age groups. Yes they have been extremely successful, BUT, they are not invincible, and they are not the only Vic team, unfortunately the metro counterparts seem to think otherwise. Few years ago they won bronze not their usual gold, that team refused to wear their medals, that to me was the ultimate in arrogance and the coaches did nothing about it.

Coaches are labelled arrogant because they get frustrated at being told to just shut it, by the referees. It's all their fault? If referees would speak to coaches properly and calmly warn them before they throw a tech at them after just ignoring them it would be a lot better and coaches would not get so frustrated. Then they wouldn't appear arrogant!

Reply #482705 | Report this post

Years ago

Don't think the overall arrogance of Vic met in all age groups had one single thing to do with the refs lol. It's due to having very successful teams over many years in all ages both boys and girls. But their is never a reason for arrogance to be acceptable especially in junior sport, not by players , coaches or the big wigs behind the scenes. And this is what has been displayed especially the last few years from the Vic metro group. So hopefully the few losses they have had over the last couple of age groups and years girls in particular but now the boys, will make them realise that winning is not a right, it's a privilege and an honour, but more importantly it should be accepted with pride and humility.

I'm not a Vic Metro person however over some years have got to know quite a few people in basketball, also involved with Vic Metro and although you will find big egos and arrogance within this program, it isn't any different than any other state program in this regard.

The difference is in the expectation, the self confidence and pressure from long term success and the culture this has developed over years at the top of junior sport, especially basketball.

Wearing the Big 'V' has a perception of superiority and elitism in Australian sport built up over many years of fierce competition and it is not only basketball that has the Big 'V' as its number one iconic label of being the 'top dog'.

It is a perception now, one that people outside the Victorian landscape may interpret the persona of self confidence and success as being arrogant at times.

This is not an excuse for poor behaviour by any individual coach, parent or other persons involved in the Vic Metro program as may have been displayed on this occasion, however there are some unfair labels and let's face it outsider opinions are even driven by envy at times.

It probably would help the basketball program if they adopted the word metro in their uniform but I understand the honour of wearing the Big 'V' so this may be a hard one for those people running the program to swallow. It would have to be forced upon them by whoever runs the Nationals before they conform to this idea but it could be a good start!

Bad behaviour is never excusable, and the fact that Vic metro as a whole seem to think they are the only Vic team is just one area that needs to be addressed by Basketball Victoria as a group. Their total disregard for their country counterparts has been going on for years, it's not healthy rivalry its arrogance that they think they a so much better, not the fact that they have an enormous pool of talent to pick from, due purely to geographical facts that the metro population out numbers the country. You don't see this with other states, having been around the Vic metro/country program's for the past 14 yrs it's something that stands out. Add to this the over confidence that all metro teams have to the point of arrogance brought about by their undeniable success at nationals, I personally think those at the top need to instil what it really means to play at this level for EVERY state, every athlete coach support person has worked their backsides off to get to a nationals, to represent their state, it's a privilege not a right, and they should act so at all times win or loose. People come to watch these athletes of all ages play a game they love and are deemed to be good at, kids look up to these athletes and want to emulate them, so it's not just about winning it's about setting an example that others can follow.
