SA SBL - Round 12 Preview
Round 12 is up this weekend. Lets get some interest going!
Women's: Eastern (9th 1-10) v Southern (8th 3-8)
The Mavericks host the Tigers at Mt Barker this Round. In their previous clash the Tigers won by 18 at home. Both sides have been riding the coat tails of a select few players, with Quintrell dominant for Southern along with Fisher. For the Mavs Hooley has been ridiculous on the boards, and finding support from Tarran.
The Tigers are coming off a 34 point belting by the Flames, whilst the Mavs are coming off a 29 point smashing by the Sabres. This is a super difficult game to pick, as I would usually tip Southern here, but Eastern have showed glimpses of being better.
Mavericks by 6.
Women’s: North (2nd 9-2) v Sturt (3rd 8-3)
Huge MOTR to really sort out who will contest the Flames for this years flag. Best get the two best available referees for this one as a lot hangs in the balance. First time round North got the better of the Sabres by 26, however it was a Novosel-less Sabres outfit. Even if Sturt win, they won't be able to close the head to head. However the Rockets are still due to play the Flames again, which if the results fall as expected, will see the Sabres take second place.
In Round 3 Jo Hill was unstoppable, and again in Round 11 she was on fire against the Bearcats. North polished off West by 24 points, and re-consolidated their place in the title picture. The Sabres best in Round 3 was Spalding, and having Spalding as a back up go to for Novosel is a big upside. Sturt pasted the Mavericks last week, and look to be in good form only 2 rounds since dethroning the champs.
Sturt are perfect away from home. Sabres by 3.
Women’s: South (4th 8-3) v West (6th 5-6)
In their first go round, South put together a dominant first half to lead by 19 at the main break. The game was out of question from there on, with South cruising for the win. West have bolstered their team with the inclusion of Carbo to the line up. How West handle Mahoney and Howard will go along way to deciding the result of this game.
West are coming off a tough loss, and at this point every game is vital to their playoff chances. West were torn apart by the Rockets in a disappointing effort that they are looking to put behind them. The Panthers put away the inconsistent Warriors side by 18 points, with Spencer also chipping in to spread the scoring load.
South look to have too many options to go to, and should take the win. Panthers by 12.
Women’s: Norwood (1st 10-1) v Centrals (10th 0-11)
Do I really need to preview this game?
Norwood will be more interested in the result of the North Sturt game.
Flames by the biggest margin this year (71+), which happened to be there Round 3 clash.
Women’s: Woodville (7th 5-6) v Forestville (5th 6-5)
The Round 3 clash was a nail bitter, with the Eagles taking the 2 point win. Fergus and Johnson combined for 44 for the Eagles, whilst White and Reynolds combined for 44 for the Warriors. The question is this Round, will Borrego-Williams suit up?
The Eagles had a big night out against the Lions, putting on a clinic to the tune of a 66-point win. A good game for a tune up, which should hold them in good stead for this week. The Warriors came off a tough loss against the Panthers, in a game that could have really shaped their season. Woodville are desperate for a W this week.
Borrego-Williams to suit, and the Eagles to take the win by 16.
Men’s: Eastern (10th 1-10) v Southern (8th 4-7)
Both teams share the equal biggest losing streak in the men’s league. Southern have dropped their last five, from being 4-2 and in the five and looking good, they have undergone a complete capitulation. Their Round 3 clash saw the Tigers post a 31 point win in dominant fashion, as their game plan was clicking. Following injuries, out of form key players, and forgettable rotations, the Tigers look doomed to finish in 9th place this season.
The Mavericks lost to the Sabres by 30, after their defensive effort mirrored that of the Socceroos. Even though their win loss ratio isn’t good, the Mavs have been competitive in a number of games this year.
The Tigers faced the super hot Flames, and went down by 32, with their inability to get to the line, and excessive fouling unable to stop Norwood. Southern still remain an outside look in for 5th place, but a loss here stamps their season.
Tigers by 15.
Men’s: North (9th 3-8) v Sturt (5th 6-5)
The Rockets are having one of their worst seasons for years, and with a reasonable line up and experienced players not performing, something has to give soon. In their first clash, the Sabres got the easy 19 point win.
Last round the Rockets were beaten by West by 22, with North only posting 51 points for the game. Captain Vasiljevic continued his horror season, putting up the worst stats since the 2008 season. The Sabres put away the challenging Mavs side by 30 points, posting 108 points, in an offensive onslaught.
The Sabres are too hot to stop, and the Rockets are all but grounded. Sturt by 27.
Men’s: South (7th 5-6) v West (2nd 8-3)
The Round 3 clash between these two sides was a classic and based on that I will give this game the mens MOTR. Last go round the Panthers stole a one point win, and kick started their early season run. In that game, Robertson and Reid combined for 43 points on 17 of 33 attempts, whilst Dawson went a one man show with 27 points.
The Panthers have the toughest back to back of any time this year, after facing the Warriors last week. Woodville were the better side on the night, handing the Panthers an 11 point loss. Which really sums up where South is at. Competitive, and able to steal a game from the top sides, but just a fraction off the pace.
West turned up the defensive pressure against the weak Rockets offense, holding them to 51 points for the game. Dawson again top scored with 17, but the work of revived big man Truslove with 12 points and 14 rebounds, relishing in his best season since 2005.
The Panthers have shown that they are capable and that may concern the Bearcats going in, but West are the more polished side and win this match up more times than they lose.
Bearcats by 19.
Men’s: Norwood (3rd 8-3) v Centrals (4th 7-4)
In what would have been MOTR if Miller hadn’t departed, now becomes a much less interesting and intriguing game. Round 3 had the Flames by 17 over the Lions, with the Flames Lycett going for 30 and 10 on the night. Miller also had a good night out, top scoring for the Lions with 20 points.
Centrals are coming off a 15 point loss to the Eagles, as Millers departure looks to hurt them on both ends of the floor. Centrals had 4 players in double figures, but none of them went on to anything significant. A lot now lies on the shoulder of Clausen and Carlin to keep the Lions season alive.
The Flames pasted the Tigers by 32, with all players registered a score, and 5 players in double figures. An electric 39 point third term set the pace for the remainder of the game, as Norwood coasted to an easy win.
Flames are the more in touch side in the comp, and will beat the Lions by 20.
Men’s: Woodville (1st 8-3) v Forestville (7th 5-6)
Their first encounter saw the Eagles secure their best win of the season, on the back of Fildes insane 46 point game, going 9 from 10 from deep. The Eagles cannot count on Fildes doing that again to get the win, so I expect a closer contest this time round.
The Warriors are coming off an 11 point win over the tough Panthers outfit, after what can only be described as a tumultuous season on and off the court. With Sims gone, and McMath in, the Warriors look to make their run to the minor premiership.
The Eagles defeated an undermanned Lions by 15 points, in a game that had more talk about Gibson’s first qualification than the result. Forestville need to find their mojo to be considered a contender this year, and with Miller-less Lions likely to drop out of the 5, leaves a spot up for grabs for Andy’s men.
The Warriors are still the team to beat, and will put the Eagles finals run on hold for another week. Woodville by 14.
