Great weekend as usual. I think Sturt need to address their "culture' as a matter of urgency. Witnessed the behaviour of some of their teams and their parents across all grades this weekend and the arrogance is not particularly attractive. Please remember that you are very small fish on an Australian and world stage.

Agree with the above comments, my son (7) was shooting at the dome today, at the contest rings in the back right hand corner and was picked on by the under 16 Sturt team for using a small ball, my boy felt terrible and now doesn't like Sturt, poor form by the sabres boys

Nobody except teams competing in the comp should be on court especially on finals day. Many teams would have asked anyone, no mater what age to move so they can warm up. Also so they don;t get hurt. Your 7 year old will need to learn that if they are to be around basketball and as a parent you will need to learn it too and also keep your kids off the court. There is no malice but it is not the time or place to expect everyone to compromise for your child.. You don't see kids kicking the ball on the side at the Crows or Port Match. Security would escort them off. This is state champs, not social ball...Kids need to learn the rules. That is life. No pity… Just keep your kid off the court and explain to them the rules and why. Don't encourage misguided hatred…..

No-one likes that kid shooting hoops getting in the way and interrupting proceedings, but if the Sturt boys themselves were slagging off on a 7 yo, that is extremely poor form and only reinforces the perception they are spoilt little arrogant rich boys.

If he was in the way, ask him to get out of the way, but by be-littling him and making fun of him, shows the emotional shallowness of bullies.

Sorry I should have clarified, this was upstairs in the stands there is a contest game set up with 3 small rings no where near the courts, in fact near the back fire exits.
I have some knowledge about the game and would never let my boy on a game court especially 5 pm on the grand final day of state champs.

This does not surprise me at all. Very very few of the Sturt players or any players in SA will make Australian teams so being arrogant is pointless. I even witnessed a Sturt bench player who got 3 minutes court time in all slagging an opposition player all game who was playing well. Perhaps he did that to make himself feel better? Low self esteem?

This is not to say other clubs do not have their pockets of bad behaviour but Sturt wins first prize. Some clubs are desperately trying to address behaviour issues parental and player yet Sturt coaches and even refs turn blind eye

Please address this within your club -it is ugly. Try and set an example to others.

Yes. They pride themselves on their superior coaching and results so they are in a good position to lead change in this area. It seems they did not win many State titles this year? I have seen kids in lower grades not even get court time during games that were 'important". I just wonder how many players they will lose in the long run

Filthy Mexican , that is a very disturbing incident. Bullying is not acceptable and I hope your son uses the incident as motivation and moves forward positively.

To the boys involved, you might think you are big picking on smaller kids, but you are not. If you have half a backbone you would be ashamed of your behaviour.

Please Define 'Picking On' before this gets out of hand as everyone is conjuring up their own ideas and definition of what that means... It may have been a misinterpreted joke for all we know ! Do you really think that all of Sturt the big bad guys are going around 'picking' on little kids…. how ridiculous...

Besides that this thread is about State Champs and you should be talking about how great it is that other clubs are starting to hit finals in State Champs, like Norwood for example who have had a drought in some age groups and now right up there, and all the other teams and clubs with individual wins no matter how small or big. This is what should be happening. All juniors being given the opportunity to challenge and the game in our state overall will develop for all clubs…then our state, then our nation.

27 - Choked... What a revolting word….. Conjuring up visions of death and not being able to breath. Perhaps on the day it was simply the better team won or other factors came into play. It is what it is and there is no shame in making a GF in state champs after 4-6 games to get there. If not you are stating that every losing team and player over state champs is a Choker.. That is ridiculous.

Every basketball associated person in this state should not accept anyone saying that anyone choked as it is a blight on all players, including those who won who could 'choke' AKA lose in the next game…….

State team game on national level is completely different to playing physical teams in with bigs camping in the key offensively and defensively and not 1 3 sec called all game by Vic ump. Many are first years as well so. On the big stage it is reffed differently and requires athleticism and speed and no camping allowed. many who look good here would not on national stage ...42 on mavswas great though, athletic and smart.... if she is a first year it would be interesting to see if makes states next year if she tries out is the other issue. not everyone does. More perspective and facts needed to analise properly. just like the 18 state who had a few 1st years so next year may blow all the other teams away... It was a tourn full of close games and that is a good thing. I enjoyed watching many games inuding those not from our club.

Facts? Your post was a sook not facts.

Facts are best team wins tournaments not team of best players. Fact.

And no reason why two teams from one pool can't both make the grand final.

Happened that way in a lot of grades even those with 4 pool grades.

Sturt only won one boys grade and that was U/18 Reserve boys against a Forestville team who thought they had it won before they started. Interesting to note by a few parents and other coaches no acknowledgement of the winning team or coach back in the club rooms after the game by the Sturt coaching director. Typical attitude by him!

There is often criticism of pool seedings and after the even we can look at how the teams faired in line with their seedings. Just looking at the Boys State, the following can said:

(Team; Ave seeding; Actual Result; Difference)

Norwood: 6.0, 4.5, +1.5 better than seeding
Southern: 5.8, 4.3, +1.5
West: 7.5, 7.0, 0.5
Centrals: 5.5, 5.2, 0.3
North: 7.2, 7.5, -0.3
Woodville: 5.0, 5.3, -0.3
South: 5.5, 6.0, -0.5
Forestville: 5.0, 5.8, -0.8
Mavs: 5.0, 6.0, -1.0
Sturt: 1.25, 2.5, -1.25

Norwood and Southern punching over their weight, Sturt and Mavs under performed against seeding.

I would argue if a team is +/- a position, the seeding was accurate.

Looking at the State Boys, Norwood would be happy with U12B (+3 spots), and U16B (+4 spots) Southern should be happy with U12B (+3 spots), U14B (+2) and U18B (+2). West should be happy with U18B (+3). North happy with U12B (+2) but sad with U18B (-3). Woodville happy with U12B (+2), sad with U18 (-3) Forestville sad with U12B(-3) Sturt U12B (-3)

green45, I think that was the game that got called off. Pretty disappointing.

Someone said Mavs were up by 2 and walked off over bad refs.

Mavs were ranked 4th and West 6th going into champs.

One argument would be to go on seedings and Mavs end up 5, West 6. Another point of view would be to disqualify them in the rankings and they both end up as 10th ranked teams.

The Mavs 16 Boys coach is a disgrace anyway. His behaviour at games is terrible but it seems Mavs management are not willing to deal with him.

If it is true that his team walked over bad refereeing then he should not be allowed anywhere near a div 1 team again.

The rules for state champs is that any team that forfeits loses 5 points for their club in whatever catergory they are eligible for ie-boys club champions. Hope these clubs werent in consideration for any of these awards as its a disgrace no matter how bad the refeer-ring is. What are coaches teaching their players about playing sport.Isnt the game about what you can control not what you cant so suck it up and get on with what you can control-ie players behaviour. I have heard the coaches are saying it was unsafe for this game to continue. What a load of rot. The coaches could have controlled this by controlling their players to play the game of basketball. Not football!!!!!!! Seriously they get the same reffing week in week out-so it wasnt a new experience that they were exposed to.

This keyboard warriors gets out and about more than the average participant in this sport. Refs being dangerous- hilarious- being crap is a lot different from dangerous. Should he be arrested, is he armed with something other than a whistle that doesnt work.
You need to take a good look at your own behaviour and how you are leading the youth from your club on court.
Your reputation precedes you,as a past player and a coach.

I have been involved in games where I wanted to walk off before but havent. To change something, you at times need to make a big statement.. I have no idea who it was, but seems like people know who the ref is, and are aware of there being a long term problem.. well I ask, if many know, what is being done about it... obviously nothing,.. maybe now it will be addressed on all sides.. if your not getting reffed properly or more importantly consistently and it is getting dangerous..really what is the point in playing the game.
Dont others come on here saying the coach should be responsible for pulling it back..its sport, and at Div 1 level. Leave it all out on the court you are told, and As a player we were always told what your getting away with do until they start pulling it up. ( I dont mean play dirty) Your job is to play not ref, If you have to start reffing the game as a player or coach, by pulling things back??
I can just see it now.. tell the NBL basketball coaches, can you just pull it back a bit the reffs arent reffing correctly and we need to help them by pulling back a bit...LOL LOL LOL
Some people cant play the sport at a high level and some cant ref at it.. we all need to recognise our limitations.
As a parent I know there wont be a ref ready to sit with your kid waiting in an emergency room, for a doctor to take spinal X-rays etc, been there done that when a game was let go, or to pay the hospital bill they may indirectly have contributed to by there incompetence of letting the game out of control in the first place..especially if your kid was the innocent one that got taken out by the kid thats getting away with stuff continually. We have all seen games escalate into a almost free for all.
There should be a penalty for overly wreckless behavior at all levels.. when you think about it, if you take a Great player out from another team in a tournament style thing, this helps take the competition out of the game, and still lets the offender continue to play on, even the next game, or all weekend if thats the case, with no explanation,, footballers have to answer to undue rough play, even if it is accidental. They Many end up missing matches if its deemed to deserve that punishment.
Having said all that, there are some really great reffs out there that need to be recognised and applauded. Keep up the great work. The game really needs you.

Two views but the truth lies in the middle. Ref and Court Supervisor not managing the game appropriately and coaches for not having control of their teams behaviour
