Referees - Website

Umpires in SA now have their own Website.

www.sarefs.basketball.net.au (link)

its great to see Neil Poulton being pro-active.

Hopefully this site can be a useful tool in the development of our refs!

Mate, if Neil put as much effort into the JNR referee's on a sat morning and Friday nite then we would be leading Australia in up and coming referee's. Instead we are the laughing stock, cause our Referee's director is to busy worring about a stupid web page that nobody's going to read. Well done BASA on another great choice on how to get basketball in this state up and running properly. 5 STARS

phantom - you have to walk before you can run.

The problem of refs not being available is being addressed directly through the 'availabilty form' which is now accessed off the site.

All up-coming referee courses are now publicised online, adressing the issue of poor communication which is evident across all basketball levels (IMO).

This website will allow for awards or accolades acheived by referees to be shown the public, giving the refs something to assire to.

I think it is a great step in the right direction!

Great idea. But in the meantime, we have little or no recruitment of referee's that are able to handle ABA, Reserves and Div 1 juniors.

So the few that have stuck around will ref in comp's where they are out of their depth. Do a sh*tty job and get depressed because somebody has a go at them. They will then quite and somebody else who isn't good enough will get a game and do a job that is just as bad and the cycle will continue.

A web site will not fix the problem. Recruitment and education.

There are going to be no good referee's coming through if u don't educate te referee's on a sat morning and friday nite. It has nothing to do with availablity forms. I do feel sorry for guys like Matt Coombe, Alex Jordan(wanker) and Joel ekers who have been thrown into the deep end. I saw matt coombe ref with Wayne on sat nite and matt was so far out of this depth it was a farce. But the group of kids that we have coming through now, need a lot of work if they are ever going to be ready for senior basketball. If we have guys like matt, alex and joel that can't even do a good job or contol a U16 or U18 boys game then what hope do we have for the younger ref's coming through. But instead spending time on a web page is more of a benefit to the refereeing community. Yeah that makes sense.

phantom -

there are many problems with ref's no one is denying that. Here is how the website is going to help those kids on a friday and saturday night.

-Website has availability form
-UIC's get more time to do rosters
-UIC's can identify if more ref's are required.
-This means UIC's will (less often) need to umpire.
-As UIC's are umpiring less, they are watching more.
-UIC's are able to provide feedback to all their refs, rather than having to fill gaps in rosters as is the status quo.
-These refs get more feedback, and are able to imporve quicker and more effieciently.

do you get it now?

Sorry I must be a bit slow today, how does a web site help get UIC's more time to do rostering. If its because the ref's can go to the web site to get n/a forms, instead of having it posted out then that is just basa being anal. and cost cuting, like they have been doing to the ref's for the last how many years.
In response to the UIC helping younger ref's. Im sure the Port Adel, Wayville and Mars UIC are all very good teachers, when they are not sitting on their arse in the bar or in Port Adel case catching up the door lady.
THe only UIC's out there that want to c their ref's improve would be Dan from M/Vale, Mike from Marion, Chris from Starplex, and Josh from H/crest.
I c ur point, it is good that something is being done but the refereeing situation in this state is only going to get worse very quickly.

Dr Dunkenstein,

I am yet to see an UIC talk to a ref during or after a game! Even at stadiums where there are enough too go around, all I see is somebody sitting around who thinks that their job is to program ref's for the games.

The UIC are not even good enough to ref high standard games. How are they going to be able to educate ref's so that they can improve to that standard.

Up at the Hillsone night, Neil had the chance of allowing two young ref's to ref the games and for him to evaluate them. Instead he chose to do the games himself and have his wife with him. Looks to me like they made a bit more monmey that night and stoppe the development of a couple of young ref's. If this is the attitude at the top then what is going to chance. Nothing!!!

and Matt @ Pasadena.

Okay, i'll try to slow it down a bit for you.

Situation at the moment. UIC's ring their umpires during the week to organise them for friday and saturday games etc. = weeks notice

The availability form (if you took the time to have a look before shooting your mouth off) is a monthly form. = 4 weeks notice.

I appreciate some people dont know their work roster a month in advance or whatever, but at least the UIC's can get some refs organised weeks (plural) in advance, and a guage on how many people they have.

Its not perfect, but its a start, and its better! Get it now?

what is LMAO??

damn you are having a slow day!

Website has a monthly availabilty form. Monthly avaiablilty means more time for UICs to orgainse rosters. More time for rosters means having to do less games themselves. Less games themselves means being able (whether they take it upon themselves or not) to watch the junior and other umpires. Being able to watch and monitor other umpires means they can give more feedback. More feedback means more efficient umpire improvement.

did you follow that?

How has having a website different than before? Availability forms have been around for ages, being sent out via email and post. This isnt going to make a difference if we dont get more refs. You need refs before you get response about availabilty forms.

Focus on teaching new refs (and some older refs), adjust the payments. THEN look at all the bonuses such as websites etc.

U have totally miss the point. Having a web site will not make it easrier for a UIC, for the purpose of the hole monthly purpose. It has been the same for at least the last 10 years with the email or posting out. Now some IT geek from NSW want to help improve refereeing in SA by making a web site available for UIC to help them with rostering. Yeah that make a lot of sense. Well done.
P.S. the clown at wayville on Sat morning sorry UIC knows nothing about the game, coulnd't handle a div4 mens game so how on earth is he going to be able to teaching jnr ref's about the game.

PHANTOM - You are more than welcome to come out to PASADENA on a Friday night and you will see me talking to referees during time-outs and qtr time and half time. If you don't see me watching Court 1, I am probably watching Court 2 or Court 3. If not, I might be at the front desk organising situations there. If neither of these things are occurring, then quite possibly, I am umpiring games!

"THe only UIC's out there that want to c their ref's improve would be Dan from M/Vale, Mike from Marion, Chris from Starplex, and Josh from H/crest."

I think all UICs want to see their referees improve!

JUST PLAIN STUPID - "Easier for them to sit on their buts and get paid $60, or whatever it is to d nothing."

First of all, we do not get paid $60.

Second of all, we do actually DO something.
Do you see referees at the stadiums? Yes. Thus, the UIC has had to contact them and find out their availability.
Do you see referees umpiring the games? Yes. Thus, the UIC has filled out a roster, accommodating all of their officials.
Do you see referees at one stadium changing from one Friday to the next? Yes. Thus, some referees have become available for that week and the UIC has had to ring around and find new refs. Also, sometimes the notification has come on a Thursday night or a Fri when a referee is sick. Trying to organise a replacement at the last minute is extremely stressful.

According to the refs website, their is a UIC Position Available for Sat mornings. Anybody thinking that this position is easy, and you are willing to "sit on your butt and get paid $60, or whatever it is to do nothing" (as "Just Plain Stupid" incorrectly put it), then please ring Neil.

I want to see all of my referees improve! Seeing some of them attend the Australian Junior Country Cup in Albury at the beginning of their year, and even some of them being selected to referee at the Nationals this year, has made me very proud of them. I want my referees to succeed, as do all UICs!

Matt, I saw u friday nite and u were standing there in between crt1 and 2. WE had a problem on crt 1 and even when asked if u could watch these two ref's u just stood there. Didn't approach them during a time out or a relevant game break. U just stood there talking to a ex ABL ref and didn't do a thing. Now as well as educating ref being a UIC is also about PR. But seening matt u can't even get a GF at a county cup then are u sure u should be a UIC or maybe still learning from a more experienced UIC. Sorry Joel Ekers doesn't count.

In relation to the "problem" that you alluded to, I spoke to the referees about your concerns after the game, when I had more time to explain it.

I believe I should be a UIC and I am constantly trying to improve. I accept constructive feedback and am willing to work on new things.

I would be happy to address the "no GF at a county cup" issue with you, but not on here.

Thanks again for the input Phantom (and I genuinely mean that). No hard feelings!

That is very sad Dr Dunkenstein. My main beef is the waste of money and resources on a web site, instead of jnr referee's. For some reason ur the one that has brought this rubbish about N/A forms. With regards to UIC'S, I am not bagging the job that they do as I know from experience that it is a hard and time consuming job. Everybody knows that the number of referee's in this state is decrease at a very fast rate. I just think that the money should be put into, maybe the referee getting a pay increase or other incentives like a free pie or donut for referee's that spend all night or all morning at a basketball stadium. NOW DO U UNDERSTAND MY BEEF

gees phantom why don't you just open your mouth, or just type away and shoot yourself in your bloody foot.

who cares which level someone plays, some of the best women basketballers this state has ever seen play or played together in div 4 some of those women could buy and sell many of the young ones playing today.

not saying dr dunkenstein is to be compared with a woman. just making the point you have no idea who is behind the keyboard. you have no idea if you are talking to brett maher, paul rees, trevor baker, geoff weeks, nathan wieland, scott whitmore, jason dix, tania dhu, or boti nagy.

most on here could buy and sell you on the basketball knowledge or ability on one little finger so grow up and stop making inane points.

EVERYONE knows that referee pay rates, and referee retention is at a critical low.

why not look at the website as a positive rather than a negative, at least Neil is being Pro-Active. A website where the referee's can post questions without being shot down in flames here should be a good thing.

what is wrong with an availability form, exams, weddings, 21st, holidays, operations can all be scheduled unfortunately at this time of year flu's and sickness's can not.

I applaud the effort of giving the referee's a website where they will in future be able to find update information they need.

Maybe I am making a big assumation here but why not get of your backside and do something instead of sitting on here continually and bitch, moan and generally demean.

now you've gone and done it. I really dont like people who gloat about themselves on this forum, but when you talk so much rubbish...

I played Juniors Div 1, went to Albury as a Junior, started at Albury as a top age 18. I have been to the USA twice to play ball, the second time as the captain of the senior team. I played reserves for two years while in 20's, i dont play reserves anymore because i have other things in my life and can't commit to trainings. Hence why i am div4 player/coach and still probably half your age.

back to the topic, If there was a perfect solution BASA would implement that, unitl you can provide one, they have to try different things, some will work, some wont. I support them trying things, whatever they are. It is better than sitting on your hands hoping. If you have a better way to fix a problem, BASA, i am sure would gladly hear it.

I can't break it down for you any more, you haven't followed my logic at all yet.

Although i didn't really expect it, all you have been is rude, narrow-minded, negative and presumptuous.

Dont try to remove your foot from your mouth just to swap feet. I haven't been a top referee, but i have told Neil (UIC) and Matt (UIC) that i will help out whenever i can.

Its weird how some people can take what was intened to be a 'pat-on-the-back" for a pro-active move and turn it into a dirt slinging match.

and phantom you have to be a top referee to understanding refereeing?

does that mean you have to be a top player to understand how the game is played?

does that mean you have to be a top coach to work out how to run trainings or call subs?

does it mean you have to be a top scoretable official to operate the shot clock?

most know the basics of shot clock, of coaching, of playing, some have the understanding of how to referee or even if they don't they can make valuable and insightful comments regarding basketball.

dr dunkenstein if you look at his posts are in the main informative and informed.

There are many on here who have either participate by posting or by reading who have a great deal of knowledge and have had and still have great careers as players, officials, administators.

I disagree that the money spent be better spent on junior referees.

Where do kids go these days, they hit the internet, what is the biggest and best way of getting the information out. if it is posted in can get lost or delayed in the mail. Email isn't always reliable, ask any manager or secretary of clubs when they give kids info to take home to their parents just how much gets home, and how much gets left in gym bags, friends cars and the like.

the website is accessible 24/7 365 days a year. it is accessible at home, at work, at an internet cafe, at the local library, a friends house, or at school.

What better avenue to distribute news.

Hey guys,

I found out some info about this website.

It is not funded by Neil or anyone involved with BASA. In fact, it is a free page set up by Basketball Australia. It's the same case with the clubs putting up their websites, with links from BASA: it is a free page by Basketball Australia. Thus, I think it is unfair to say that Neil is "spending money" on this website (when in fact, he isn't).

Also, this information, ie Availability forms, and the like have also been on the website before now. It is only now in just the one place! Neil gathered all that information and put it in the one spot.

Just some information I have found out. If I know of any more, I will post it!
