Adelaide Lightning back for 2014/15

The Adelaide Lightning is pleased to announce that they will continue to participate in the WNBL for season 2014/2015.

Basketball SA and the Adelaide 36ers have answered the clubs calls for assistance and have developed a co-operative plan with the Marino family to ensure that the Adelaide Lightning will continue their proud tradition as South Australia's elite women’s basketball team representing the state in the WNBL next season.

The Adelaide 36ers will continue to administer the club for the 2014/2015 season and they are working with the Marino’s and Basketball SA to build a framework for the 2015-16 season that aims to guarantee a stable and successful future for the Adelaide Lightning.

Mr Hubbard said "I am optimistic about the future of the Adelaide Lightning in the WNBL. Basketball SA will be working intensively alongside the Adelaide Lightning and the Adelaide 36ers to plan a business and management model for the club that is sustainable and achievable and also supports growth for the club in the future. What that looks like specifically will emerge in time" said Mr Hubbard.

Together the three organisations have sought support from Basketball Australia and the WNBL, submitting a request to schedule 10 double headers with the Adelaide 36ers next season which would provide financial relief for the club by reducing their game day expenses significantly. The double headers with the Adelaide 36ers have proved successful over the past season and provide positive exposure for the women’s team as well providing a welcomed opportunity for basketball fans to see two great games in one event.

Adelaide 36ers General Manager Dean Parker said “We believe in the Adelaide Lightning and we know that Adelaide wants them to survive and thrive. We need everyone who believes there should be an opportunity for a women’s team to represent SA in the national competition to get behind the team”

Last season’s Head Coach Richard Dickel has chosen to step down from the Lightning to concentrate on his role with the Adelaide 36ers and Forestville Eagles Basketball Club.

Great news! Fantastic to see everyone working together to keep Adelaide Lightening in the league. Except for Basketball Australia. If they are not careful, the NBL will take over the WNBL and they will be left with nothing. Then the funds can be properly used to support the elite competition, not send Kristina Kenneally around the world to watch a game she doesn't even know the rules to or the players on the court. Go Lightening!

Who will coach this Lightning side in the upcoming 2014/2015 WNBL Season? The rumour is the budget has been slashed drastically & some players from last season will be on the move.

JEREMI Moule is ready to take up the challenge as Adelaide Lightning's new coach, with his first task retaining Stephanie Talbot who was drafted by the WNBA on Tuesday.
Adelaide endured a chequered 2013-14 season with initial coach Peter Buckle sacked a third of the way through and interim Richard Dickel leading the team to a 12-12 record just outside the top four.

Dickel, an assistant coach with the NBL’s Adelaide 36ers and heavily involved in Forestville Eagles’ program, chose to give those twin jobs his primary focus.

Moule, 39, is an "Adelaide boy who made good", starting as an “average point guard and reasonable defender” with Southern Districts.

He played for Tony Schar, coached juniors, then coached Adelaide Southern in the State League when Southern Districts merged with Adelaide Giants.

“I was 19-20, and coaching was taking up more of my time than playing so I made that my priority,” Moule said.

Work as a journalist with ABC Radio took him to Bendigo where he met esteemed coach Bernie Harrower, joining him as an assistant.

Moule worked alongside Harrower for six years, including the Spirit’s 2012-13 WNBL championship success.

He also coached Bendigo and then Eltham Wildcats’ women in the SEABL.

One of his priorities will be giving Adelaide, which confirmed its status as a WNBL club yesterday and will be supported by Basketball SA and Adelaide 36ers, more of a South Australian flavour.

“There’s a lot of good SA talent dispersed around the league,” he said, Moule having worked with Tess Madgen at Bendigo and also interested in Emma Langford who now is without as gig after Logan Thunder folded.

“From a coaching philosophy point of view, you need to be able to adapt your coaching to the playing group.

“At Bendigo, the emphasis was on good D and trying to find the balance between open and free-flowing play alongside pretty good halfcourt structure.”

Moule, married to Lucy Spalding, is coaching Sturt in the State League and has former WNBA guard and Dandenong Rangers import Natalie Novosel playing for him at the Sabres.

“I am not looking at (potential) imports at this point,” he said.

“First we have to get our Australian content settled and that could be a bit more difficult given the uncertainty around the team over the past month.”

The Lightning’s main priorities are likely to be retaining All Star Laura Hodges, burgeoning talent Talbot, Jess Foley, Jenni Screen and Angela Marino.
