NCAA Tournament, how does it work?
If a team loses are they out? Ie: Duke lost, so are they now out of the whole tournament?

This is conference tournament time...
In a nutshell and without going into too much detail
Win your Conference - automatic bid in most cases.
Win your Conference tournament - automatic bid in most cases.
The purpose of the conference tournament is to give teams that went poorly in their conference a chance to get a spot in the NCAA tournament by winning their conference tournament.
Then there's things like strength of schedule - who you beat and when/where you played them. A whole bunch of things get taken into account.
Duke will make it.
Duke was one of 6 teams to make it from the ACC

last i checked duke were seeded 3rd in the mid west for ncaa tourney.
so for the original poster -
there are 3 titles over a period of a few weeks they contend for -
conference title - the team that finishes the regular conference in top spot.
conference tournament title - end of conference tournament (better finishing teams get better seeding)
ncaa tourney (includes all conferences country wide) - referred to as the big dance.

placement in the ncaa tourney and season rankings depend on strength of sched etc not just W / L.
as the previous poster indicated.

Which is why those mid-major conference tournaments are so intense - because if mid-majors lose their conference tournaments they are extremely unlikely to get a bid on selection Sunday.
Other teams can rest a little easy – obviously they still want to win. But if you saw Syracuse the other day, the team weren't too disappointed with the outcome. In fact, coach Boeheim (sp?) was laughing at the fact his team missed 6 shots in the last 20 seconds (After getting multiple O Rebounds)
One team is always going to be an innocent victim of the system. This year, it was SMU. They were ranked at one stage, and IIRC were still ranked at the end of the reg. season, yet they did not receive a bid.
Very unfair I thought.
Being a mid-major is a bit of a double-edged sword – if you win your conference tournament = great your going to the dance.
But when you lose, the media in particular will always downplay your ability and use the "weak strength of schedule" argument (which is fair enough sometimes – except in Wichita State’s case) even if you finished the season with a nice record like SMU did (23-9)

Off Topic.
How the hell do they work out the seeds.
Louisville is ranked 5th according to the AP Ranking & gets a 4th seed & New Mexico are ranked 20th & get a 7th seed??
**New Mexico beat San Diego State twice & San Diego State get a 4th seed.
the way it works is you predict on a bracket if you get all of it right you win a BIRRION DORRARS
I like the ranking system, you want to get a high ranking you play good teams. Should weak teams be rewarded and play in the Tournament because they found weaker teams to play against, so their win loss looks great. the rankings is there to make sure the best teams go to the tournament.
