Is Kyrie Irving Australian?

I know Kyrie was born in Australia but he is now in Australia's Top 10 of richest sport people.
He is number 5 in the BRW list of the richest sports people!!!
Should he be in that list??

He is leading "international" scorer in the NBA right now which is odd because he could one day represent USA in olympics. Tim Duncan has already played for USA and he is on same list. Both great players but imo both yanks. Good example with Baynes Mystro.

Is Mel Gibson an Aussie?
Born in USA, started his career here but all the fame and fortune comes from the US. Do you ever see him listed as an Aussie of any kind?
Forgive the detour.....

Define an "Australian" first.

IMO Irving is American, although born here he wasn't raised here.

People who are born in another country but raised in Australia are IMO Australian.

By "raised in Aus" i mean spent atleast half of their childhood/teenage years in Australia.

Baynes born in NZ but raised in Australia, so is Australian.

If he has a passport then anything beyond that is semantics

Chris Kaman played for Germany and has never set foot in that country

As Nat says, check the definitions (i.e., eligibility criteria) used to compile the list. I expect he meets them or they would not have included him. Or is your question about whether the eligibility criteria are appropriate, given Irving meets them?

BTW, Irving is an Australian citizen. He holds dual citizenship.

Just wanted to bring it up for discussion Peter John.
If he holds duel citizenship should only half of his earnings be counted? ;-)

Kyrie Irving is a dual citizen: Australian and American.

"Kyrie made the training squad for team USA didn't he?"

Yes.

"Is he paying any tax to Australia?"

He does not reside in Australia, so I'd imagine not. E.g. after France recently raised their marginal tax rate for the very wealthy (up to something like 80% from memory), many of these still-French citizens sought dual citizenship in a neighboring country, changed their country of residence and thus avoided paying France's tax rate.

"If he has a passport then anything beyond that is semantics"

Mystery unraveled.

Ben Gordon playing for Great Britain as well isn`t he, as does Loul Deng.

Kyrie will see if he makes their roster we will be the second option no doubt.

All you need is citizenship and your fine. Half our Olympic athletes in track and field and wrestling, weightlifting are in the same boat. 2nd/3rd ranked in there own countires so they come here.

Funny how on the news last night they showed the list and started blabbering on about how cricket is such a good money earner even though the ballers were ranked higher. It was like they didn't want to use the dreaded 'b' word and focused on the ocker sports. This country really has a hilarious inferority complex when it comes to the big global sports like soccer and basketball.

I dont consider him Aussie in the slightest... lived his whole life in America... is in a team usa training camp... he only comes here to soak in adoration and sell some jerseys.. If he was so Aussie he would be playing for Australia. End of debate.
