Laura Hodges and Mark Wright win Jan WNBL awards

HODGES, WRIGHT TAKE OUT WNBL MONTHLY AWARDS FOR JANUARY

Adelaide Lightning star Laura Hodges and Dandenong Rangers Head Coach Mark Wright have started 2014 at the top of their game, claiming Wattle Valley WNBL Player and Coach of the Month awards for January.

Already enjoying one of her best seasons in the WNBL, Hodges was a standout in the month of January as her Lightning team attempted to make a late charge to the WNBL post-season.

In her five games for the month, the three-time Olympian averaged 20.8 points (per game) at a remarkable 67% shooting from the field to go with 6.8 rebounds as the Lightning when 3-2.

It has been a brilliant campaign from the 30-year-old, who currently leads the WNBL in field goal percentage at a 59.2%, sits fourth in scoring (17.5 points per game) and seventh in rebounding (7.2 per game).

For Wright and his Dandenong Rangers, January got off to a slow start before the team recovered to force their way back into second position.

After losing their first game of 2014 to the Adelaide Lightning, the Rangers went on a four-game winning streak, claiming back-to-back wins over the Townsville Fire.

The WNBL Player and Coach of the Month for January took into account Rounds 13 through 16 of the 2013/14 Wattle Valley WNBL season. All Head Coaches and eligible media had the opportunity to vote.

Voting results are displayed below.

Player of the Month Top Five - January

Laura Hodges (Adelaide Lightning)
Suzy Batkovic (Townsville Fire)
Abby Bishop (Canberra Capitals)
Jenna O'Hea (Dandenong Rangers)
Leilani Mitchell (Dandenong Rangers)

Coach of the Month Top Three – January

Will we get a Lightning player in the final 5? Obviously with the two Dandenong players it only leaves 3 spots. Hurts to say but Batkovic might fill one! Room for Hodges??

Definitely, Laura has had an MVP season and produced under difficult circumstances. Batkovic has had a decent second half of the season which doesn't match Hodges input for the whole year.
