Sixers v Cairns 1st Feb

These are the games fans love to watch. Sixers wearing black singlets "just because we can" against the Taipans who recently knocked off those pesky 'Cats on their home court leaving the Sixers with the best home record.

Cairns are on a 3 game winning streak and in a season where there are 6 top 4 teams jostling for 4 positions, every win is crucial. A win by Cairns means they get the split. After tonight they have 4 of their remaining 7 games at home so Fearnie is coming home with the spinnaker out. The Sixers have dropped a couple against the Sydney Convicts and will be challenged tonight. Jason Cadee with a broken finger (training WAS hard this week!) means Brendan Teys will an opportunity to shine. BJ with a rolled ankle could be on the bench so Jan might get some time.

Sixers will be on the back foot with injuries but the 6th man will be helping tonight. Cairns will be looking to silence the crowd with a hard first quarter. Crowd favourite, Stevie Weigh, has had a resurgence in his last three games and a common thread in all Cairns wins is Wilson and McCamey.

It's another hot one outside so make sure you get there early and enjoy the cool, refreshing air conditioning that the Arena offers. It's too hot to mow the lawn or visit the mother in law to help her clean behind the fridge so the Arena is the place to be to watch the Sixers grind out a gutsy win.

Definition of danger game! The bookies have if very wrong to have the 6ers paying just 1.30, this is a 50 50, Cairns god loathe them are legit right now. IF Adelaide can pull it out, undermanned, will be character building stuff. No disrespect to BJ, but with him out, will mean more minutes for Schenscher, which is well over due. Very dangerous when he gets it at the free throw line as he is a willing passer.

Adelaide should win this one though I wish for an upset. Sixers are too good at home (thought same about Perth!) but this has potential to be a danger game with the sixers bench a bit thin. Sixers by 6.

No disrespect to Schenscher (well, just a little bit), as a Cairns fan, I'm happy to see more of him and less of BJ. When Adl played in Cairns BJ completely monstered them, but for some reason he only played about 10 minutes (maybe he lacks a certain amount of match fitness). Adl should have exploited that.

Cairns having 4 of their last 7 at home isn't necessarily a good thing. This season I think they've been playing better on the road.

We will see Wilson, BJ wasnt good at all against Sydney, strong guy but flat footed and forced himself into double teams under our basket. I just hope Burston plays heaps of minutes, he isnt very good these days and Luke will have his way in that battle.

Ervin played selfish again. Few ill advised shots and then especially at crunch time when he could have passed it off to an open Creek drives against a double team himself and then misses both free throws. At that stage I had given up on him. What happened to the Hawks version who won MVP?

Then he redeems himself with the last play but tonight wanted to be the man much more than usual because of his childhood rivalry with Jamar Wilson (they've been going at it against each other for 19 years since juniors). At least because of the competitiveness it was obvious who was going to try and win it for the Taipans at the other end. So in a way it worked out but I would like to see G Erv more as a facilitator with all the other talent we have.

Great match got to hand it to the Taipans if they won they would of been the weakest team in league history to win the Doomsday Double for those who love NBL fun facts.

HoldenV8- it is ridiculous isn't it. Surely not living up to expectations is grounds for termination of Performs contract. I don't see how it is possible that at least 50% of games each round have an issue. It should be a simple thing to get working.

Love my Sixers and I am on a high right now but if the Snakes didn't play Perth on Thursday would the result be any different. Thoughts? Are we "back" to first half of the season form? Great game and great win all the same.

Perform/nbl.com.au were shocking tonight.

No stats on NBL website at all. Where is the boxscore it is still not up.
NBL.TV no score ticker in the first quarter.
NBL.TV incorrect scores shown for remainder of game on ticker.
NBL.TV at the end of the game previewing the next round they had home and away teams mixed up, they claimed Townsville are hosting Cairns next week when it is the other way around.
Also the first half it was hard to maintain the quality at full (2.4) - so issues re: bandwidth yet again at stadium?

Anything else I've missed?

Would like to see the overall stats then or just the non-consecutive ones?

I saw somewhere else someone claim this but didn't back it up with the actual W-L figure.

I loved the way Ervin played tonight, i reckon everything was as per coaches instructions.

Most disappointing for me though was the free throws, of which Ervin was also a culprit. Free throws are just technique and muscle memory.

It was an extremely entertaining game tonight. Both teams played very well and Cairns hit numerous tough shots to stay in the game down the stretch. The key was that we never allowed them to get infront on the scorboard at any stage in the last quarter.

The reason the sixers win a lot of close games though is the ability of our offense to regularly get quality shots when needed. This wasn't the case last year as with many of the same players, the offense was often stagnant when the game got tight and we went for long periods being unable to score. A lot of credit has to go to Joey for this, he has got the sixers playing exceptionally well on the offensive end and is the main reason we are second on the ladder but also helps puts bums on seats as it is pretty to watch.

Probably the best game I have ever seen DJ play also, he is the best offensive big man in the league, even though he does have some work to do on defence.

The one dissapointing thing about the game night for me was the music was far too loud. Numerouse people in the area I sit were reiterating this also, and I would argue that the sound level of the music was dangerously high? The atmosphere was good enough in the stadium without the music being blasted like it was.

Officially, the average pain threshold for humans is 110 decibels for any length of exposure.

But yeah to recap, the Twitter updates were the main thing for me tonight with live stats down and not having a computer on me to stream the game. Pain in the ass.

Johnson with 33 is despicable. Should not happen.

Statsheet don't comment than if you havnt watched the game. This was easily Johnson's best game he has ever played. He was hitting jumpshots he was posting up he was attacking the rim so to say that cairns didn't guard him is obsurd. Johnson was simply in the zone and I doubt anyone in the league would of stopped him. Like Ervin said he is playing at a MVP level and I think he can certainly put his name in the ballot with ennis and goulding as the 3 best players in the nbl this year.

Just watched the game on replay and by god you're wrong, anon. Look at the P&R defense on Johnson and the way we fronted him with lots of space between him and the basket. Johnson did not have to work much for his share at all.

And yes, it is an indictment on the defense when a guy torches you for 33 points, including 23... yes 23 in the first half! That simply should not happen. Is Fearne not a supposed 'defensive mastermind'? Adjustments should've been made.

While DJ was great on one end he was equally as bad at the other. Typical DJ, paying no attention to the scouting report and not carrying a hand to shooters on the switch, Cairns exploited him on every switch in the first half.

And in the 4th, everytime we play Cairns they always love running P and R to get DJ on Wilson, used to happen when Marty coached and still happens now.

DJ does have the mobility to make a better go of this, he just doesn't have the desire.

You talk defence, how bad was the defence on Steindl and Schensher was definitely costly. Guards find it so easy to get past him when he's the only person on the split and it's one on one.
I'd also question the comment that Ervin did as the coach wanted - he was taken off a couple of times for what appeared to be a talking to and he had a little "hissy fit" when taken off during the last. Once agan he made poor decisions due to selfishness which reduced the margin, so i guess it only seems right he redeemed himself a little by shooting the winning basket

It must have something to do with a 36ers uniform.

When Diamon Simpson played here he shot 48.1% FT's.

Jarrid Frye is shooting 28.2%.

I stand corrected. Frye sucks at the FT line this year. Simpson was better in that regard. But both hit less than they missed.

Anon #455253 yes Ervin was selfish but hardly anyone has mentioned it at all! I don't know whether fans here really concentrate when watching the games as you'd think it would be the #1 talking point.

Even at the free throw line when he missed the first of two he was looking at the ring as if "how dare you let my shot rim out" like he was God. Guy has gotten really arrogant.

Have just watched a video posted on the 36ers Facebook page of the final scoring play and DJ's effort shouldn't go unnoticed.

DJ was under the basket being guarded by Alex Loughton while Cam Gliddon was on Ervin. DJ moved to the top of the key to set a screen and effectively forced a change with Gliddon then on him and giving Ervin a mismatch he exploited with Loughton.

Not a bad effort by both players really. It effectively won us the game.

Went to the game and had a great night. I thought the 6ers were pretty bad defensively and that is the area that they need to tighten up come play off time. Especially defending the 3 point line.

DJ was great but as already mentioned he scored alot on lob plays as Cairns fronted him for most of the night. 6ers took great advantage of that and fed him nicely.

I couldn't understand Joey's sub rotations. He had guys coming off only after a couple of minutes but I'm sure he knows what he is doing. Much better than the last few years!
