Picking for fitness over potential

Juniors getting picked for fitness instead of their potential for the sport? Why?

Isn't being an athlete a part of having potential?

Because a certain level of fitness is required for the sport?

fitness can be harder to instill than skills - so if you have an alright fitness level and ability to learn.......

Would you rather a fatty who can shoot 3s for 2 minutes before he starts airballing, or a fit player who might not shoot as well but can keep playing all day...

Age and level would help.

BALLER#3

I would rather a fatty who could hit 4 threes in one quarter than a chump who throws up brick after brick for four quarters.

Who gives a toss how long you can play for? If you can't play, you have no business on the court regardless of how fit you are. The NBL is a good example of this. There are far too many "workhorses" that can't shoot.

I would've thought that to play in higher divisions you'd have to have both. Good shooting skills and defensive skills. To be a good defender you have to be fit. Not rocket science lol

what are "juniors"?
what is "fitness"?
what is "potential"?

Interesting but very vague subject.

You can teach a chump to shoot...

As judged by?

No one is being picked on pure fitness alone.

All things being equal - a fitter player is going to work harder and hold his form longer than an unfit player.

In keeping with the vagueness of this thread I will add this post:

It is not always what you do, but who you know that counts!

Jawai wasn't picked for fitness when he first started the game.

I think they pick athleticism, calling it fitness, rather than actual fitness.

Athleticism is a really vague thing as well.

In the end, you've got to have the base skills (which increase in coverage as you go higher) than simply being fit or an athlete

By they way, I agree with Anon above, better to have someone who can knock it down (Pero Cameron comes to mind) than someone who can't. Also, you can't teach everyone to shoot - some people just can't.
