No chance of succeeding unless the three regions can stop their bickering.

Split the games between Hobart Launceston and Devenport three ways? Scrap that as how would they share playoffs... TAS is so splintered. Man how good was NBL in the early 80s when all three had their own team!

They've had a bid for about 3-4 years now but I don't think BA was interested. I haven't heard anything about this new bid however.

I assume bid = semi-formal interest/enquiries.

As part of the the Labor governments relection promises in Tasmania a number of years ago, the promised to build a purpose built basketball facility for community use that would have enabled access for a potential Tasmanian NBL side ultimately use.
Once elected or relected the labor government found out that they were broke and used that as an excuse not to honour their election promise.
This was one of the reasons that the NBL interest that was bubbling along failed to go any further. The NBL had then had very informal discussions about a return of Tasmania into the NBL.

Under the yet to be sanctioned new NBL I don't believe that they have been approached. Yet.

NBL will never happen in Tasmania! There's way to many idiots on the board of Basketball Tasmania! Also, as shown in the J Schueller thread there's a lot of people who probably can't even play the sport that will do whatever they can to shut down anything that they don't agree with!

Basketball in Tasmania is gone, time to cut it off from the rest of Australia before it drags us all down with it!

Tassy Govt can't be too broke. It seemed easy enough to find $33,000,000 for Stadium redevelopments at Blundstone to cater for AFL ( Nth Melb ) and Cricket.

Maybe the Tassy people looking at Facility developments need to go with the Libs

Don't let the facts get in the way Murray.
The $30mill expansion is a 50/50 deal with the feds. Both contributing $15mill each.
Cricket and now the AFL have combined to play out of the Blundstone arena and it's seen as an important drawcard for tourism in tassie.
Basketball is a minority sport as such. Maybe the Libs when they get in will assist the NBL proposal and help basketball in Tasmania secure a home for the first time.

Whats wrong with the Derwent stadium? Not that old and a 5k plus capacity

The DEC isnt the answer. An NBL side in Hobart needs a permanent home, not a venue that they have to pay exorbitant rates to hire and then train in school gyms during the week.

Ah, that explains it, what a waste of what looks like a nice venue

Plus two of the three regions in the state will go up in arms that is in the wrong place and not support it at all.

Lets hope they think to call it a Tassie team and play some games in the regional centres.

@436996

$15,000,000 of State funds would just about set up a 4 Court with show court facility in Southern Tasmania to replace the outdated Moonah and Clarence facilities.

This would cater for about 7000 users on a weekly basis and provide opportunities for National Events which have had to be passed up because of a lack of suitable Indoor Facilities

Surely 7000 plus more for Intra & Interstate events actually participating on a weekly basis to help reduce health problems would be a better community spend than a whole lot of seats to sit beer swilling pie eating football supporters on about 4 occassions a year.

Roll on the elections and we might just get someone interested in actually helping Basketball to achieve the objectives of NBL and Young people being active in a Multipurpose facility

This seems to be a very touchy subject, as there r lots of basketball fans in Tasmania, but I don't think the NBL cares or even thinks about Tasmania.
The NBL is focused on the major cities and thinking about the big picture, it cant be called the NBL. The Tasmanian Government r hopeless with supporting these kind of projects. There would be some big name people who would support a Tasmanian team back in the NBL. I hope it can happen we could deffinatly get a group of people to financially back it.

Surely NBL team aspirations and new Facilities go hand in hand. The DEC is not an option. The cost to hire this was approx $16,000 per night way back in 1996 so god knows what the costs are now.

Run with Julian Burnside's idea to process asylum seekers in Tasmania. $500m/yr into the economy from refugee welfare while being processed. $1b/yr incentive payment to Tasmania as a state. Australia saves $2.5b/yr on current offshore processing.

Then get them all hooked on basketball. Free season tickets even. A new stadium or two would be peanuts within that $1b/yr. Influx of Sudanese and Tasmanian basketball would boom.

Optional extra: grab some of those $2.5b/yr savings to prop up the NBL.

Sorted!
