Hawks sign import Durrell Summers

The Wollongong Hawks have announced their newest import signing, 6 foot 4 swingman Durrell Summers.

Durrell Summers played his college ball at Michigan State and went undrafted in the 2011 NBA draft. After which he played in the D-League, France and Venezuela where he averaged 17.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 1.8 spg.

Summers, who is also known as "summertime" is best known for his high flying dunks, three point shooting and defensive ability.
From And The Foul.

Pronunciation of the first name appears to have emphasis on the second syllable. Like "Da RELL". Durrell and Rotnei is quite the first name combo!

No surprise to see another shooter at the Hawks, but those draft profiles don't really speak highly of his consistency, rebounding or ability to take someone off the dribble. Who from the Hawks is going to get to the line consistently? Ervin and Deleon have done it in the past.

Edit: From the Mercury:
Barring any hitches with immigration clearance, Summers is expected to debut with the Hawks at next weekend's NBL preseason Blitz tournament in Sydney.

That dunk video, three dozen angles on the one play. About the only thing he didn't do was play it backwards.

those draft profiles are comparing him to nba talent. His dleague stats look great, much higher averages than lance hurdle and he is taller.

Good dleague stats and appears to be a good player. Only concern for Wollongong this year is rebounding

It was only a video of one dunk though. Taken from a live broadcast.
Typical Perth fan attempting to undermine other clubs even before players have arrived in the country.

When have I ever done that, pwned? I just said that I thought the dunk video was a bit silly.

Which it is, whether you're a Wildcats fan or not.

Numbers look good, particularly for his last pro ball gig in Venezuela.

The Hawks can always say that Wollongong is the Detroit of Australia.

So of course they will come.

Nice pedigree, decent numbers at a big school, some nice performances in the NCAA tourny. Could be a good one. Hopefully he can rebound!

When is Rhys coming back? Wollongong appear to have improved on last year while still retaining their core IMO. Gordie will get this Rotnei kid a tonne of good looks with his offense.

Rhys Martin from internet webpage news site:

Guard Rhys Martin, who last season was enjoying his best year at NBL level until he was cut down by a season-ending knee injury, is making it back steadily.

"He's starting to get through things. He's loading but it's difficult because the guys aren't really getting after him yet," McLeod said.

"He won't play at the pre-season tournament but I'm hoping to play him some minutes in our final game we have against the Kings."

Post-Blitz, the Hawks will play Sydney in Sutherland on September 27.

"We're optimistic Rhys can get back to where he was," McLeod said.

The NBL looks to have a pretty good group of import swingmen with decent athleticism in the league this season: Summers, Frye, Ennis, Dennis, Pace. And local guys like Abercrombie, Creek, Blanchfield, Gliddon, Steindl(?),

If Rhys misses too many games, it will really hurt the Hawks. So much depends on him.
