Why advertise it when they are finalising the details with who they want in the job?
Why would they advertise it and risk infecting BigV with people from outside of Basketball who have broader experience and skill-sets, zero conflicts of interest, no preconceptions and bias's about the product.??
Sheez.... Seriously.

Touchy, yes, but anon' has a point here. Recent appointment at Geelong was a good one from outside basketball, should serve as an example...

Bear, there previous CEO only lasted a year. Was he not suited for the role?
people get bored and stale in a role lkike Big V CEO. Its not really a true CEO role as you have to do so much yourself. Just ask Ken Harrington who walked after only a few weeks. DIdnt like the fact he needed to make his own coffee. There is not much you can do in the job as everything major is decided on by the clubs and then only the strong ones.
Its not a job for anyone with a serious management background.

I had no idea that people with a serious management background don't know how to make their own coffee! :)

@Happy Days, previous CEO probably took on too much and the support network around him could have been better. It was a transition period and he did lots of work, but probably ended up with too much himself!
That said, if you are a leader you need to inspire others to lead by having them taking on a task with the confidence to follow through without being mirco managed.
New CEO is from a media background, that could be a good thing, regardless it is crucial to be a leader and not fall into a trap of doing it all yourself I believe...
Let's face it basketball is a unique political and sporting environment isn't it?? Not an easy job running it I would imagine.

Thanks Bear, I noticed that he had only stayed for 1 year where i probably thought he might of stayed for 3 to guide them through the transition stage. Its also difficult coming in as an outsider where the new appointment is a local with a strong connection to the club and the community.

The business and management model has changed quite a bit at Geelong. They had the merger of basketball Geelong with the Supercats and then quite a few changes at board level along the way.
Everyone involved did a lot of work and those who left can hold their heads high through their efforts.
What is happening at the moment is really positive and the process we are going through down here appears to be one of clearer communications, better understanding with a structure that could really take the Association a long way if the leadership is sound.
The key here is our relationship with council as the stadium is completely under council control and ownership, so if that cooperative can work towards one goal it will shape the future (hopefully for the kids to come)!
Watch this space, I guess...
Don't assume that just because the position isn't advertised on Hoops or an Association website that there are not good employment practices in place. It is common practice when looking to fill these kind of positions in all sorts of businesses to use specialist recruiters who will identify a short list for the Board to interview. Certainly that is how I would expect any major sporting organisation to behave. When Andrew D moves on, we won't see an ad in the age for his position at the AFL!

Thats applicable when your hunting a top end CEO. You dont use headhunters for a role like this.Be open and transparent, go out to market and you'd be surprised what comes out of the woodwork.

Demetriou is on $1.88M. Maybe he might like to take a pay cut????
70K role versus 1.88Mil role... Yeah i see the similarity.
just how hard do you think running the Big V league is people ?
Given the BigV GM is just a puppet for the member clubs who have all the say on how things are run it cant be very hard.
I reckong the hardest job would be keeping the two fools on Big V tv ego's under control.

Does the CEO answer to a Board of Management or the clubs?

If the structure is anything like that of an Association it may look like this (basic form only):
Clubs are represented by their nominated delegate.
The elected board runs the league's meetings under their model rules and decides on who will be CEO.
CEO manages the league supported by others and answers to the board who in turn liaise and cooperate with the clubs advising them and sharing reports via their delegates.
Or at least in some similar fashion to this...

Just been told that Justin Nelson is in line for the job. Could this be true or is it just another rumour?
