commentators mentioned that one of the Opals has a loss in the family so they're all wearing armbands as a sign of respect

Ordinary start for the Opals. NZ have looked the better team when LJ hasn't been out there.
Early days of course ... I expect us to blow them away once the game settles down.

opals just need to get a little more in synch - lot of open looks and moving the ball nicely - we look better with natalie, belinda, and loz out there.

Commentator just said that the winner of the series goes on to play in the world cup. I thought both Aus & NZ have both qualified (2 oceania spots) and these games were just for rankings.

seems like both aus and nz have already qualified and these games are purely for ranking purposes :)
Oceania has 2 spots in the Worlds for the men, but only 1 spot for the women.
So the women are playing to see who qualifies, the men are playing for seedings as both have qualified.
Only one team qualifies in women , both teams in men's

Why is Marino not suiting up for NZ. Is she injured?
When was the last time Marino took to the court for NZ?
I don't think she took to the caught during the Oceania championships in 2011 - at least not during the Melb match. I know she was on the bench but can't remember if she was even suited up then.

Should not have been that close. We should not need to rely on Lauren Jackson's 22 points to beat NZ.
Hoping for a much better Opals performance in the sequel.
