36ers China tour adds imports Herron, Perkins, Brown

American basketballers Raheim Brown, Ervin Herron and Damien Perkins will guest with the Adelaide 36ers in their preseason matches next week in China.

And one of the first teams the touring Sixers - down Boomers squadmen Adam Gibson and Anthony Petrie, plus Tall Blacks forward BJ Anthony - will run into is Brian Goorjian's Dongguan Leopards.

Adelaide's "regulars" will be imports Gary Ervin and Jarrid Frye, Jason Cadee, Mitch Creek, Daniel Johnson, Luke Schenscher and Brendan Teys.
Herron, a 193cm guard who replaces Gibson, and Perkins, a 200cm replacement for Anthony, are playing in NSW with Bellingen Braves.

Brown, a 209cm power forward who replaces Petrie, has been living in Adelaide for several years with his local wife Karoline, running the popular New York Dreams cafe in Semaphore.

Any interstaters know much about Herron and Perkins? Raheim Brown's been mentioned on Hoops a few times before. Promo picture of Herron and Perkins.

What league do Bellingen even play in? Can't find them mentioned in Waratah (or the other major leagues, for that matter).

Herron dropped 60 in a game....that said it is very low standard.....few of the better players didn't quite make it in higher levels....ie Aaron Marsh is 24 & 11 every game when he played Big V hamp level he was 8 & 5

Why are the Americans even going?

Arizona, as the article mentions, the Chinese side of the equation is keen for a bit of showtime in the games. Obviously at the expense of a jaunt for any SA kids but that's hardly their concern.

Maybe it doubles as a chance to have cheap back-up plans for Frye? Who knows.

I don't know the situation but wouldn't make more sense to bring possible development players, rather than some imports they cant sign.

If some/most of the funding is coming from the inviting parties, it might not be the 36ers' call.

Is Brown just looking for a new gig in China?

Might be a return of service to an agent

A piss trip it may be, but Goorjian won't be treating it as that. I wouldnt want to be playing in a side that might lose by lots cos its a piss trip.

When was the last time Brown played? He doesn't play locally so is he in any form of game shape or are they taking him just as a bigger body to play a few minutes here and there?

It's not the Olympics, it's a pre-season tournament for the guys to get to know each other a bit better off court, do some bonding and play a few exhibition games.

It is better than taking the development players from their local finals

Development players would have been definitely the go ( such as Adam Doyley, Stefan Wright, Sam Daly, ex development Jan Warbout) but some are going to US college at the same time as the China trip or playing in ABA or SEBL finals.

They probably would have been rewarded for training loyally for a long time with the 36'ers but the timing of games was unavoidable, therefore they need some players with grunt.......ASAP!

I think a few here aren't understanding this is probably all about money and have no doubt the chinese interests paying the bills in the absence of a full 36ers squad would've asked for a few 'local' imports to be thrown in over some developing youngsters.

I'm sure they'll just be used in complimentary roles.

Good idea taking guys for a bonding session that will never be on the team. Joey is already starting his usual thing of doing what ever he wants. Like taking the "brothers" thing as has already been suggested. Let's hope he doesn't send the Sixers finally broke.
Undoubtedly the Chineses will be paying for the trip, but if the locals can't play because of local finals how about giving someone others more deserving that could be future Sixers players. down the track. Surely there is enough new talent in Adelaide to be able to do this.
