KLAIPEDA (FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - Resilient and joyous Australia came back from the brink against Spain at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women as Carley Mijovic and Stephanie Talbot led their team to a 73-68 success in a remarkable turnaround.
The celebrations on the final buzzer were made even sweeter for the triumphant Gems since they were routed against their opponents during the Preliminary Round and found themselves down by as many as 17 points this time.
Trailing 48-31 after a triple by Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego, it looked pretty much all over for head coach Cheryl Chambers and her team.
But with more aggressive defense, better ball movement on offense and Mijovic providing a spark, they found a new gear and hauled themselves back into a truly gripping encounter.
At 51-43 they still had plenty of work to do, but they posted a spectacular 15-0 run which turned the game on its head and had the Spanish playing catch-up.
Mijovic converted a super three-point play, produced big block on defense and then showed she has a nice touch from the perimeter as the burst was rounded off with a tough basket from the hard-nosed and multi-talented Talbot.
During the closing stages, Tahlia Tupea looked to have driven a three-point dagger through the heart of the Spanish team when with 90 seconds remaining, she put the Gems 69-62 ahead.
But, Spain hit back with six consecutive points to set up a thrilling end as Talbot grabbed arguably the game-winning steal which led to Alex Wilson calmly sinking the free-throws which cemented the first medal for the Gems since 1997
Mijovic and Talbot combined for 47 points and 15 rebounds.
