Funny What's Hot/What's Not, Double Header edition
Since 2K4
What's Hot:
- Danny Phillips season high nine triples!
- Oscar's game winner v Central over two guys from the foul line with .2 seconds left. Better put it in to make sure his huge ego continues to function (just kidding)
- Coach Loveday going for the Brian Goorjian look on the sidelines. Better than wearing a dodgy looking club jacket
- Aaron Lockyer 17 points on 7/12 shooting in 20 minutes vs North
- The South Adelaide "DJ" spinning the tunes. Didn't like all that he played but it was much more basketball orientated and from what I have seen maybe the best music selection in the ABL (I haven't been to Southern or Central games but). Played some Hilltops, Thunderstruck, 1200 Techniques, Scribe etc.
- Jye Watson, 45 points on 15/27 shooting vs. Southern
- The Dave Chappelle show skit featuring Wayne Brady. Everyone with broadband should download now!
- Brad Gerlach 19 points on 6/12 shooting vs. Centrals
- Colin Thompson
- Michael Zorich, 18 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists vs South.
- Our junior state teams. A month out from the Nationals, (18's 2nd July Perth 16's 9th July Canberra) are there any lead-up games we can watch. A curtain raiser to an ABL game would be great!
- Jenni Carberry 19 points on 7/17 shooting v Rockets.
- Paul Vandenbergh triple double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 blocks vs Southern.
- Amanda Williams. For those who missed it, here is how the last play panned out. Eagles 71 Mavs 69, 17 seconds to go, Forestville gain possession, seven seconds to go the shot comes from the block, spills out to the top of the key, controlled by Williams, dribbles full court, pulls up and drains the three in eagle defenders face. Pandemonium. She finished with 24 points on 9/20 shooting.
- Simone Nelson 22 points on 9/17 shooting v Centrals
- Darren Ng 29 points on 7/17 shooting, 7 assists and 5 steals vs Norwood
- The step-back. Erik 'rubber-man' Burdon and Brad 'Sara lee' Newley are kings of the step back three.
- Mark Bauer 16 points on 5/5 shooting vs Norwood.
- Having a 20gig 1.5mb broadband package. I'm not sure there is enough porn out there to download with this package.
- The Bowley sisters 39 points and 22 rebounds v Norwood
- Jason Dix 30 points on 9/19, 21 rebounds and 8 assists vs Eastern followed up with 22 and 11 against Norwood
- Nas new album Streets Disciple.
- Cayla Francis 28 points on 9/17 shooting with 13 boards plus 4 blocks against Forestville
- Brad Davis finally firing up for 34 points on 10/25 shooting, 8 rebounds, 5 steals vs Forestville
- The beef-tree. We must save it. Ask of yourself not what the beef-tree has done for you, but what you can do for the beef-tree.
- Christian Bell for 19 points on 7/11 shooting vs Eagles.
- Half-life 2 death match
- Matt 'Slow-feet' Gange. Started, stroked 4/8 3's, finished with 20pts.
- Coaches buying me pale ales at the Wayville bar. Any other coaches reading this feel free to do the same, I won't mind at all.
- Erin Phillips Triple Double. 22 Points, 11 boards, and 10 assists.
- North Adelaide's own AB. Heard this from a good source that there is nothing better than an "Afterbirth" at 1am. If you haven't yet had the pleasure, it's a bed of chips, beneath the filling of a yiros, and drowned in three types of topping, each greasier than the last.
- Jenni Screen 24 points on 8/13 shooting and Narelle Lindsay 20 points on 8/15 shooting v Norwood
What's Not:
- Mike Mckay not being released from the nursing home in time for the warm-ups versus South.
- Some punks who threw up air-balls this weekend: Erik Burdon on a floater, Aaron Lockyer (who must have the ugliest shooting style in the history of the game), Damien Scanlon.
- Steve Pilkington missing an open dunk on a fast-break.
- The fact that Marion stadium has nails 3cm out of the wall. One spectator hurt themselves when they lent back into the nail and smacked the back of their head. Surely a safety officer would love to see that!
- The dude who shouted "you suck" to the umpires.
- Those stupid "winks" on msn messenger.
- Forestville charging tertiary students full price! Take a leaf out of Hillcrest's book. We are just as, if not poorer than our high school counterparts! And we mean poor in all forms of the word as well.
- The weekly bagging of the ref's. Yes, their performance may not be outstanding, but bagging them doesn't help the situation.
- Baller bands becoming mainstream. When did basketballers ever conform to commercial social expectations? Basketballers have always been individual, not fazed by the latest trend or craze. (insert sarcastic tone).
- Fake movie files placed on the internet to stop people downloading movies for nothing.
- Someone posting under Anonymous finding a thread from a year ago just as an excuse to abuse on some Sixer bench players. As much as I give ABL players a hard time here I recognize their immense talent and wouldn't go as far as to say they have no game, because it couldn't be further from the truth. Over the years Jason Williams provide some good defensive pressure when we struggled at times, (and stepped up in the 02 grand final or has all these loyals fans forgotten about this now), Gower stepped up and filled a hole when we were injury prone last year etc. Seems some here have short memories
Flop of the Week:
- Jason Baylis hands down. Or maybe Jason Bayliss or Jayson Baylis or Bason Jaylis depending on whom you are. In any case this Multiple Personality Disorder baller made the award his own on the weekend with 3 points on 1/6 shooting, 1 rebound, assist and steal with 6 fouls and a turnover in 16 minutes. What was more impressive was the amazing fashion in which it occurred. Missing an open lay-up from 1 foot out and missing the put-back. Followed that passage of play by getting his 4th foul 2 minutes into the second. Unable to catch a ball directly under the basket from a guard for an open shot. Received his sixth foul with 10:23 to go in the 4th diving for a loose ball against Nick Hambour. Things turned right around for South as soon as he left the court as well. Congrats to Jason Baylis, your DC Flop of the week!
Mike Mckay Cheapshot of the week award:
- Awarded to Forestville's Cameron Wood. 4 fouls in 3 minutes, including a cheap, unnecessary, off the ball, unsportsmanlike foul, when eagles had possession. What were you thinking?
Dictator of the week award:
- Goes to Stalin, but Paul Arnott was unlucky not to win coming in a close second.
Miscellaneous Word of the Week
- Gravy
Terrible promotion of an ABL game award:
- Goes to South Adelaide. Probably around 100 people in the stadium and how many juniors did I see? About 4 or 5 tops. Compared that to other clubs were the bouncing of balls on free courts doesn't stop all game long and South relatively has some work to do. If ABL exists as a resource draining venture to give top young players something to aim for it maybe be best to give juniors the greatest exposure to that product as possible to keep them coming back to the service industry that is basketball. Thank god they had some good music because if not for that there would be no atmosphere without kids around, (except for the sounds of South supporters abusing umpires).
A special shout-out to Dr. Dunkeinstein, who gave a lot of help with this list once again. I'm out.
